We were due to travel via London to Vienna and have non refundable train tickets and hotel booked in London. For anyone in London, is there certain areas we should avoid given the riots etc.

London is pretty safe- ( as far as anywhere can be safe)
I’d definitely not be concerned about any protests.
Pickpockets and phone snatching are the only things to be aware of if you have a good phone)

Enjoy your time in London and sorry you and thousands of others missed out on your Gig.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 08/08/2024 12:41

Of course chopping up a journalist is entirely justified.

Not done for any religious extremist motivations though so not relevant.

Most countries do dodgy stuff, look at the David Kelly thing.

This comes very close to blaming "men".

You absolutely cannot tar "men" with this crime. Yes the extremists are likely to be men (of course) but so are the fathers of these children that would lay down their lives to protect them and who, without knowing their kids would be at risk have helped to pay hundreds of pounds for them to go have a nice time.

I'm sorry, I don't want to be rude but this is one of the stupidest things I've ever read on MN.

But it IS men. Ariana concert? Men. Bataclan? Men. No woman did any of these things.

Aw, and some guy bought his kid a concert ticket? Yeah, so did a shitload of women.

It is religious extremists and they have absolutely nothing in common with the average man/father/brother. Nothing.

circular1985 · 08/08/2024 12:44

@oakleaffy thank you! I'm trying to come up with a fun itinerary for the girls. Thinking the Taylor exhibition in Kensington then a west end show.

Suzyboozy · 08/08/2024 12:33

Yes, the intelligence did very well. I also commend them for telling the truth matter of factly, it was a foiled IS terrorist attack & people need to be aware that these threats still very much exist. Transparency is key when dealing with the public.

100 agree.

GoldieFurEverywhere · 08/08/2024 12:48

I feel so sad and angry about this (obviously hugely relieved the plot was foiled). How dare they.

Me and my teen have tickets for Wembley and they're currently not wanting to go, despite it being THE topic of conversation for the last year.

If the London shows go ahead, I'm torn between instinctively not wanting to go anywhere near it; and saying "fuck you" to the terrorists...if I'm honest I'ld be petrified going, but trying to convince myself and anxious teen that the security levels will be even higher than normal.

Feeling so sad and anxious about the state of the world.

This fear is exactly what the terrorists want.

Some of the comments on here stray really close to Islamophobic. This is heartbreaking for everyone involved, though clearly could have been so much worse. Some of those devastated children and parents will be migrants and *shock horror *Muslims. Why can’t people just direct their anger at the small number of absolute cretins that carry out these attacks. I have a number of wonderful friends who are both Muslim and immigrant (including one who came on a small boat many years ago!) and they’re just as disgusted as the rest of us.

I think it's notable on the thread that despite the news saying one of the people was in with Isis barely anyone has dared to breathe a word about religion. That's why we have the ridiculousness of people saying "it's men" because it's easier to tar half the population than to be honest that it is religious fundamentalisism. Yes let's just pretend it's "men".

London is totally safe. We went to a football match at the Emirates Sadium yesterday and it was business as usual.

You will have a lovely time!
When life gives you 🍋 lemons, make lemonade!

Mum is 84 and goes all around London visiting Galleries, Museums &c on a weekly basis, always travelling on public transport.
I have never felt unsafe in London.

She should be ecstatic that this was discovered and that she's safe!

No, she shouldn't. She should be furious at the evil that has brought this situation about! My DDs would have been gutted if this had happened to them.

Runnerinthenight · 08/08/2024 13:44

JamSandle · 07/08/2024 22:01

To be honest between all the protests, riots, terror attacks etc I'm sometimes surprised anyone goes anywhere. The world is a dangerous and unpredictable place.

We have to live our lives! Some existence, hiding away in fear!

Runnerinthenight · 08/08/2024 13:47

Iwant20cats · 07/08/2024 22:21

Oh I understood it loud and clear and reported it

Well that made you look rather silly didn't it?

These Far Right and racist men have no place in Western society.

The men in Vienna are religious extremists.

Runnerinthenight · 08/08/2024 13:50

Greigeisthelatestbeige · 07/08/2024 22:34

I never thought of that but you are probably on the right track. There is so much focus on Paris at the moment.

The world has become such an awful place. I hate this is the world my kids are growing up in.

The world has always been an awful place.

MagePaige · 08/08/2024 13:51

@Runnerinthenight well both of those things can be true

Runnerinthenight · 08/08/2024 13:54

billycat321 · 07/08/2024 22:44

Anyone else sick and tired of hearing about Taylor Swift?

No. Why? What harm has she ever done to you? This is hardly publicity that she would have wanted. What a ridiculous comment!

Suzyboozy · 08/08/2024 13:59

It actually beggars belief that a 15 year & two older teens had the capability to cancel three T. S concerts directly affecting hundreds of thousands of people. As they are teens their guardians also have to accept responsibility, chemicals were found ffs... I'm so angry on behalf of all affected but so impressed by Austria's handling of it.

Sdpbody · 08/08/2024 14:06

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle which would be the definition of far right and racist? All religious extremists are far right, and people who want to destroy a type of race would be known as racist?

Teens who have jobs and managed to steal the chemicals to build the bombs they were going to use.

I doubt they are going to listen to their parents even if their parents are actively involved in their lives.

Suzyboozy · 08/08/2024 14:35

Chemicals were found at one of the teens residence, due to his age & the fact he was living in Vienna (expensive capital city) I would assume he was living with his parents or guardians.
Does more need to be done by governments to keep u18s offline to prevent radicalisation, bullying, grooming & so much more?

I’m in full favour if U18s not having phones that can access the internet or do more than text or call ten numbers.

Wont happen but I wish it would.

Yep dumb phone instead of smart phones. I really don't think u18s are mature enough to cope with the online world across so many levels...

I understand your point but if under 18s didn’t have access to Smartphones how would the interest in Taylor Swift and her fanbase which I many young girls have been established?

Equally, looking at this weeks events many people over 18 would be better off without a smartphone and they would be better of reading a book!
