Brighton - Less than 10 anti-immigration 'protesters' and about 1,500 counter-protesters with more arriving all the time. Jazz band playing. No violence observed or reported. A couple of buses had to stop for a few minutes to get through the crowd.

Hastings likewise - a handful of anti-immigrationists, and hundreds of counter protesters, chanting "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

That's not an answer

What has it got to do with anti racism in the UK.

Maybe because people who are against racism aren't in favour of apartheid or genocide...

ErrolTheDragon · 07/08/2024 21:49

They were well outnumbered in Liverpool too. And Bristol.

And lancaster and other places too of course

are you blaming immigration on these problems? I blame lack of funding from our governments.

also , is it only black / Muslim inmigrations fault in your opinion or do you complain about people like me (white European female).

Edited

I'm saying that 700,000 net immigrants a year is too many and unsustainable. It causes pressure on housing and services.

Yes it’s given out warm weather this weekend too. Wonder if they’ll let it go quiet for a few days and then come back out or if they’ve all given up now.

Both hot weather inbound and the start of the league footie season (championship begins 9August)

But I’m hoping that this round of riots has indeed run out of steam

hobbledyhoy · 07/08/2024 21:51

It really does restore your faith that decent human beings make up the majority.

Edwardandtubbs · 07/08/2024 21:53

Historically anti-fascist marches have been led by the left. In the 1970s it was the SWP. Many of these people believe in armed struggle as a legitimate form of resistance, so they are likely to have sympathies with those who consider themselves to be freedom fighters. They are also, generally, internationalists. They’ve typically always supported Palestine. I think you’ll find a number of the organisers of these counter protests are old SWPers. I’m not surprised at all. It’s tradition more than anything for them to carry Palestinian flags among other symbols.

Newbie8918 · 07/08/2024 21:54

Same with Liverpool today. Over 1000 counter protesters protecting the doors to the mosque.

Signs saying 'we'll swap some refugees for racists'. Typical scouse humour.

Still really awful that it's come to this but heartwarming to see.

TheOccupier · 07/08/2024 21:57

Complete non-event. I knew it would be!

No doubt these "pro immigration protesters" are the same ones that complain about expensive houses/rent, overstretched NHS/schools etc.

High immigration has been keeping the NHS afloat given successive governments have been unable/willing to recruit sufficient numbers or pay them properly. More generally, I think you’re missing the point, wilfully or otherwise. I expect very few people in this country would say that immigration policy has been “spot on” over the last 50 years. But its errors and imperfections are still 10x preferable to the “vision” of Farage etc and the thugs he inspired the last couple of weeks.

Paul2023 · 07/08/2024 21:59

The vast majority of the public won’t go out and protest but I think many people do have genuine concerns about immigration.

Many people are just too scared to say it though.

Theres a world of difference between being concerned about something to , being violent and looting.

I actually think most people respect immigrants who work in the NHS and contribute to society. Of course lots of NHS come from abroad.

It’s the ones who come here when we know nothing about them or their background that concerns me personally. The ones who don’t respect British people and who commit crimes here.

Obviously, that isn’t everyone , of course it isn’t. Most people don’t.

If someone wants to come here to better themselves , be respectful, and abide by the law, they’re welcome in my opinion. I think most people would generally agree with that.

How attacking mosques, libraries and shops helps anyone is beyond me and anyone with half a brain cell.

Obviously it's good to see that there's no far right protesters and riots so far tonight...I hope that continues.

Very confused as to why there are so many Free Palestine placards and flags at the counter protests though.....

It might be because those same anti-racist protectors are also against genocide, I guess.

Exactly this.

You know I'm in my late forties and until this past year I'd never seen swastikas displayed on the streets of my country.

Nobody would ever persuaded me in advance that as well as tattoos on the arms of the usual thugs, swastikas would also be brandished on signs and banners by an entirely different group claiming to be "anti-apartheid".

Sad times.

But if you examine the ONS figures (and i assume you’re basing your figures on 2023) a very large number were students who will only be here temporarily and pay £19000 per year plus visa costs and often health insurance or people on work visas mostly working in health or social care who are actually easing the pressure on some services.

I've never met anyone who's pro genocide. Have you?

Awww, didn't you have enough money on your Oyster Card to get through the barriers at East Croydon?

Everywhere. Phew. This is the real silent majority blowhards like Farage and Robinson always claim to represent.

Lol what?
I would never wish my family to live in such culturally enriched place ;)

Complete non-event. I knew it would be!

I did think it was odd that after all the public listing of the locations & times, extra police drafted, loads of people would turn up. Why would you?

BetterTheDevlinYouKnow · 07/08/2024 22:14

Curses! The mods were too fast for me.
I'd have had money that LondonFox was an out of work actor called Laurence.

How do you work out which immigrants work in the nhs?

Are concerned about European whos background you also don’t know?

Your post makes me feel so sad, I hope most people don’t think like this.
