Brighton - Less than 10 anti-immigration 'protesters' and about 1,500 counter-protesters with more arriving all the time. Jazz band playing. No violence observed or reported. A couple of buses had to stop for a few minutes to get through the crowd.

Hastings likewise - a handful of anti-immigrationists, and hundreds of counter protesters, chanting "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

I did a bit of strategy consultancy work for a care agency. This agency had a full in-house training programme providing NVQ qualifications alongside working. They also paid at the top rate.

It was impossible to recruit in the UK enough people to meet demand. They would recruit and train people at great expense only for them to say within a few weeks that they can only work 10 hours per week.

Post Brexit, the agency had to resort to hiring from India at great expense. It was a last resort. The agency would have much much preferred hiring and training local people as it would have been significantly cheaper and easier, but there were no applicants who would work full time hours.

Interesting thank you. Shocking they couldn't recruit/train from that pool of youth complaining they have no options / nothing to do .... except do/sell drugs etc.

Care is a big one! Saying that… would you really want any of those thugs as carers? pretty glad they didn’t get those jobs.

Get them while they are young and before they go off the rails. I'd not write anyone off. There is a lot of truth in walking a mile in someone else's shoes. Some people are plain bad, but many just need a chance or an opportunity.

How young? Cares a very responsible job. I’ve worked in care. Very few people will do it (it’s not glamorous) and we had to get loads of people in from agencies - normally from other countries where it’s not seen as so negatively. You got the odd dodgy person though. SA is rife. One man SA a lady in the shower and didn’t realise she could talk (I worked in learning disabilities). I wouldn’t trust just anyone with that job.

That'll be the "businesswoman" who kicked it all of with her tweet. She was busy telling the papers she was "mortified" earlier this week. As of it were a social faux pas.

I'm not saying every single person who attended is antisemitic, but I'm sure you can see the problem if the intent of those organising it is one of anti-Semitism. People are willingly joining a protest run by antisemites with an incredibly strong anti-Semitic vibe. Those attending are at the very least ignoring anti-Semitism, which is not ok at an anti-racism event. Or anywhere, really.

It's a bit like defending those who joined the riots who aren't racist but just pissed off with the world. It wouldn't occur to me to defend them because they've chosen to align themselves with racists. That's just not acceptable to me.

I hope you see my point, even if you don't agree with it.

I see your point. I take anti-semitism extremely seriously and I think you are right that it's not taken seriously enough.

That’s not easy to do anymore. It’s not the 1980s. We have digital passports and face recognition now. This is what you saw on Essex gangsters films set in days gone by

No, not in films, in real life.

StoneofDestiny · 08/08/2024 22:48

That's disgusting, but unfortunately not surprising on mumsnet these days

It would be if it was true.

Jews attended these marches are a tiny minority.
Of course Jews want peace and despise killing, but to march with hoards chanting our destruction? Never.

Everywhere I see Palestinian flags, anti-Israeli comments, river to the sea reminders. Would you like to be reminded how many millions of people hate you and want your race obliterated shoved in your face every day?
Do you have any inkling why Jews are afraid?

People can be against genocide and against anti- semitism at the same time. People can be against illegal settlements and occupation, while believing in the rights of Jewish people to have a homeland. It's not either/or. Believing in the integrity of the ICJ and its ruling does not make one anti-Israeli. I feel sad for Jews that have experienced anti-semitism and I feel a huge sense of injustice for the genocide in Gaza and the renewed Islamophobia in the UK.

My refugee friend came to the UK in preference to France because there is already an established community of people of the same ethnic group as herself including many who, like her, had been horrendously oppressed in her country of origin.

She arrived in the boot of a car though, not a rubber dinghy.

And of course alot of migrants who come to the UK have a preference for the UK because they speak English..... because let's just remind ourselves, Britain invaded and plundered their country a hundred years/150 years ago in the name of Empire. Yes we left English behind in these places, but the legacy of empire is complicated.
When I lived in France, I met lots of Malians, Sengalese, Ivorians etc etc, for exactly the same reasons.

Mmmmminteresting · 09/08/2024 04:02

Last night
15 people from the anti racist side arrested.
Ricky Jones, Labour councillor, suspended by the Labour Party for that disgusting hate speech and the crowd cheering him on, WTH
Croydon trashed!!!
Is this left wing scum?

What is going on

The whole immigration debate is interesting.

The most extreme opinions on either side are...

Total ban on absolutely all immigration

Totally open borders with every other country in the world and no restrictions at all

I think vast vast majority of people will have views somewhere in the middle of these two extremes....ergo most people believe in immigration being restricted in some form

noblegiraffe · 09/08/2024 12:11

ergo most people believe in immigration being restricted in some form

Ed Miliband even had it carved in stone.

My god, I'm returning to the thread and its deteriorated to Gaza/ Jewish people debate.

These marches have nothing to do with Gaza.

StoneofDestiny · 09/08/2024 18:18

There has always been controls on immigration - whether they are effective or appropriate is a matter for the government.

There is a huge difference between legal and illegal immigration. We must always be able to respond to need from desperate people fleeing oppression, genocide or war - to not do that shames us as a country.

The irony of course is that some descendants of migrants forget they are that! Whether from Ireland, Europe, various parts of Asia or Africa etc. They also forget migrants from the UK populate other countries.

Regardless of that - there is no excuse for abusing, terrorising or vandalising the property of people in this country. The vile language and violent disorder that has ruined the peace of this country is not justifiable. So glad the law is clamping down on the thugs and agitators behind this disorder.

I hope the law will be equally determined to stop those guilty of vandalising or spray painting property with hate messages or symbols and keep seeking out the agitators on line who seek to stir up hate of other people culture, religion or colour.
