Update on "riots" tonight from local news sites

Brighton - Less than 10 anti-immigration 'protesters' and about 1,500 counter-protesters with more arriving all the time. Jazz band playing. No violence observed or reported. A couple of buses had to stop for a few minutes to get through the crowd.

Hastings likewise - a handful of anti-immigrationists, and hundreds of counter protesters, chanting "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

Slightly ironic don't you think?🤣

According to the Nottinghamshire Live facebook, the EDL were vastly outnumbered by counter protestors at Ruddington Tram Stop and after being taunted with “Where’s your Tommy gone “ the knuckle heads slunk off . They’d tried to turn up to riot at the address of a vulnerable elderly lady in West Bridgford who’s son is an immigration advisor but their were given their marching orders and fucked off thankfully!! I can’t imagine a riot in West Bridgford !!

It would be utterly pointless for groups like the EDL to go to Brighton. They would
be outnumbered.

Id imagine groups would pick their targets and times.
The police have been on tv saying they’re ready for trouble makers.

They’ve got no chance of looting or vandalism because they’re outnumbered.

Maybe it’s simmered down for now?

Two northern towns near me were “ rumoured” to be expecting anti immigration demonstrations this afternoon/evening
Nothing happened. Hospitals (non essential services), council offices, GP surgeries, shops etc all finished early and locked up for the day. The cost of that must be massive so we can’t keep doing that.

Same. I would have gone to the Brighton protest but am a POC and did not feel safe in case I encountered racists on the way. White friends who went sent me updates and it has gone a long way to making me feel safe again.

Thank you to everyone who doesn't just sit by, and who calls out unacceptable, prejudiced behaviour every single time. I am grateful for every single one of you.

I don't know why I bother with stupid post like this. But anyway, blame the Government that was in power for 14 years, for doing naff all, except creaming of the Country, and handing lucrative contracts to their families, and mates,and stop punching down. Educate yourself.

We do complain about those things but we know the problem is not immigration. The NHS would be in an even worse state without all the immigrant healthcare professionals and the other problems are rampant capitalism and the underfunding of vital services. They're the fault of a tiny % of rich and generally white people hoarding all the wealth and getting away with it by using the media they own to tell everyone 'Look it's the immigrants!' and loads of people are still falling for it.

They were well outnumbered in Liverpool too. And Bristol. They are just a very loud and occasionally violent minority

That's what I'd expect in Brighton, but I hope everywhere else stays similarly calm.

It's so cheering to see our country doing something good. I'm so grateful to these people who have turned out tonight to peacefully stop the riots. They must have balls of steel.

But immigration is only a part of this complicated picture. Government policies, poor management etc also had a part to play in those issues as well. Most people know it’s more complex and simply turning off the immigration tap is not going to fix anything.

I confess that I didn't expect this tonight and was worried about what might happen. Well done and Thank You to all of those who turned out to show the racists thugs that there are more of us than of them. They don't speak for us. They don't speak for the country.

Wish all protesters/counter protesters would keep off the streets and stay at home/go about their normal business. The cost of policing all these protest/counter protest is huge. The more people out on the streets the more police needed.

It’s important for people to have their voices heard. Peaceful protest is a right. God help us if we didn’t use that right. I won’t just ‘go about my business’ while the EDL are marauding around our streets causing fear and chaos.
