Update on "riots" tonight from local news sites

Brighton - Less than 10 anti-immigration 'protesters' and about 1,500 counter-protesters with more arriving all the time. Jazz band playing. No violence observed or reported. A couple of buses had to stop for a few minutes to get through the crowd.

Hastings likewise - a handful of anti-immigrationists, and hundreds of counter protesters, chanting "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

It's heartening to see so many people come out on the streets tonight.

A special big cheer to Nans ( and Grandads) against Nazis Flowers

How do you work out which immigrants work in the nhs?

Are concerned about European whos background you also don’t know?

Your post makes me feel so sad, I hope most people don’t think like this.

Well Europeans that come here obviously have a passport so there’s a record of when they enter the country ?

Im a realist. I know people are concerned about people coming here unchecked without knowing where they are from.

You can be sad about that if you want but I’m being realistic.

Are you not concerned that someone could enter the country from another country and be a violent criminal, and we don’t even know they are here ? If there’s no record they’ve arrived here, then the Home office don’t know.

Isnt that common sense ?

Looks like Croydon is being Croydon....

Yes, I commented earlier that it's astonishing that the EDL aren't holding protests outside Lunar House (head office for immigration) in Croydon. Almost like they've decided that actually it's not an easy target in the same way that hotels full of women and children are...

It certainly is . My daughter is at the Bristol one.

@BlueLimeRun im afraid I do agree with that post you quoted from @Paul2023 As do lots of my friends. Re immigration, I want tougher rules/laws.

im happy to have anyone that works hard and contributes to society. More than welcome.

but if you are a criminal or have an unchecked background then it gets a bit more complex.

Thanks that’s my point. It’s people who come here unchecked when we have absolutely no idea of who they are or where they are from or what they have done in the past.
I honestly think that’s reasonable and common sense.

Elliania · 07/08/2024 22:25

I used to spend most weekends in Walthamstow & lived very close to that area for years. Looks like around 10,000 came out for counter protests & from the accounts I've read/seen it's been very peaceful. So proud of my former local area!

No anti semetism?

What anywhere?

BlueLimeRun · 07/08/2024 22:28

@Paul2023 so you’re saying immigrants are criminals but Europeans with a passport won’t be.

So ridiculous and biased.

Your ideas of common sense and mine are very different.

edited for typos.

murasaki · 07/08/2024 22:28

The Croydon thing wasn't a racist protest per se, it wasn't on the list. I think it was opportunistic thugs (who may well be racist) hoping to join a riot that didn't happen, and chucking some stuff around as they were there. 8 arrested apparently.

If it'd really kicked off I would have heard the helicopters.

Idiots gonna idiot, basically.

The slaughter happening right now in Gaza is still uppermost in people's minds, whether you like it or not.

No it isn't. It might be in yours but not everyone's and it is nothing to do with EDL/Reform, current civil unrest and tonight.
I don't think about it a great deal. I worry about the consequences of what is happening in Israel and Gaza should it spread to a wider scale and I want it to stop but I don't think 'the suffering in Gaza' is in my mind all the time. I am sick of the middle east and their continual inability to live in peace with each other. It's power hungry men fuelled by religions that provoke war and suffering.

I'm sure the Jewish people on those marches weren't full of 'jew hatred'- just a desire for a lasting peace in the Middle East, and an end to the madness in Gaza.

Jewish people on the marches....

We've already had that on this thread.

Thanks for reminding us all though

AlhambraQueen · 07/08/2024 22:30

So proud of the people in my hometown of Brighton and relieved too right now. I’ve been watching the news with horror from Scotland.

HarrietPierce · 07/08/2024 22:31

"No anti semetism?

Not on the Bristol marches against genocide which my British-Egyptian daughter
went on with her Jewish flatmate, Jewish work colleagues and many other Jewish people.

LuluBlakey1 · 07/08/2024 22:31

I am proud of the 4000 people who filled the streets in the West End of Newcastle tonight in a peaceful protest against racism and fascism. They protected our West End from the ignorant EDL /Reform Nazis.
The 'scouts' were seen assessing the crowd size, the message clearly got through and they went home.

kiterunning · 07/08/2024 22:33

The vast majority of the public won’t go out and protest but I think many people do have genuine concerns about immigration.

Many people are just too scared to say it though.

Theres a world of difference between being concerned about something to , being violent and looting.

I actually think most people respect immigrants who work in the NHS and contribute to society. Of course lots of NHS come from abroad.

It’s the ones who come here when we know nothing about them or their background that concerns me personally. The ones who don’t respect British people and who commit crimes here.

Obviously, that isn’t everyone , of course it isn’t. Most people don’t.

If someone wants to come here to better themselves , be respectful, and abide by the law, they’re welcome in my opinion. I think most people would generally agree with that.

How attacking mosques, libraries and shops helps anyone is beyond me and anyone with half a brain cell.

british people go to live to other countries and trust me many of them don’t respect the local culture. Why is it ok for expats but not for immigrants?

do you get concerned as well about British people that commit crimes ? Or is it only the immigrants committing crime who concern you ?

I'm saying that 700,000 net immigrants a year is too many and unsustainable. It causes pressure on housing and services.

This sort of throw away comment has to end, its led us here in the first place.
.Our housing issue isn't simply 'too many immigrants' our weeks of waiting on the NHS isn't 'too many immigrants' its a lot more complex than that, but we love simple easy to process messages.

We have a choice, have visa based migrants according to our needs, or choose to cap to zero net and radically change our present economy- Even Reform says in their manifesto they'd 'freeze 'non-essential immigration. What the fuck is 'non-essential immigration' because that 700K from 2023 was down to health and care visas and student visa propping up a broken higher education funding model.

We need to make the hard choice, cap numbers and allow universities to close and lower home student numbers and raise fees by a considerable amount ( we wont have international students propping up the system) and the NHS would have to be scaled down and care homes charge much higher fees to take the lack of foreign workers. We could have net zero migration tommorow.

Many people might not have an issue with that, but Farage and co only tell you half the story like you did in your post. Who would tell voters, lets have a NHS that's privatised , and charge families 20K a year to go to Uni (like the US)

I'm not saying which choice is best, but we need to be honest in the debate.

We have been told multiple times on this thread about the Jewish people on the marches

I'm saying that 700,000 net immigrants a year is too many and unsustainable. It causes pressure on housing and services.

Some other - homegrown- things that cause far, far more pressure on housing and services are:
second home ownership
empty homes
lack of social housing
landlordism
substance abuse
people not taking care of their own health
profiteering in social care
dentistry effectively being privatised

net migration has never been 700,000. It was unusually high in 2023 at around 635,000.

You’re absolutely not listening to me and have totally mis read my point.

Im not going to argue with someone who doesn’t listen and is being unreasonable.

Fair enough disagree with me , but I’ve received a few thanks so clearly other people understand what I said. Other than that feel free to disagree with me - again.
