Just been talking to my neighbour. He and his family are Nigerian. They haven't been here that long. Both work. They have small dcs.
He's had to take today off work as he works in a town that's been targeted and he's scared to travel.

I'm in tears I'm so angry. Those bastards wouldn't know how to fucking spell work. Luckily I got inside before I broke down. Dh is also teary. They're the loveliest family. I'm genuinely scared for my African neighbours. There's a lot of families moved here from the south because of a housing shortage. All of them that I've met are decent lovely people. Wish I could say the same for a lot of people who are from here.

We're broken aren't we? What the fuck is to be done?

I agree with you - national disgrace and shame doesn’t even cover it

I remember Rock against racism - we need something like this where the silent majority and some of our bands ( It was led by Two Tone and others) are very very public about this not being the country we want.

I know the above will seem flimsy to some - but I don’t believe the government or the courts have the power ( jails too full already)
Time for good people to speak up and show the world us at our best

Miloandfreddy · 05/08/2024 18:20

Shameful. Absolutely disgraceful. That poor family. This is so so sad. Fucking thugs should all be locked up for a long time.

Echobelly · 05/08/2024 18:20

I only hope this bullshit backfires and it has the effect of uniting everyone behind immigrant and minority communities, which seems likely to because of the far right's shameful, braindead behaviour. I can't imagine many people, even some who have questionable views about 'foreigners' looking at these people and thinking 'Yes, I want to be associated with that'

HighlandCowbag · 05/08/2024 18:22

I live on the same road of one of the riots, we have Nigerian neighbours as well. I was terrified for them, the young son (about 15) was out and about and I just wanted to tell him to stay home.

But why should he?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 05/08/2024 18:22

@alrightluv , yes we are broken the pity is that no amount of crying about it will address how we have got here and therefore implement what is necessary to mend us.

User135644 · 05/08/2024 18:24

Shut down social media would probably be our one chance to stop the madness.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 05/08/2024 18:24

Just waiting for someone to come along and tell you to calm down, there's no problem, it's not the fault of the 'protesters', they are just poor and fed up.

YANBU op. My mental health has been trashed this weekend.

okydokethen · 05/08/2024 18:28

Shameful indeed, it's disgusting.

If this supposedly links to the horrific killing of the young girls.. why are mosques being targeted? Rwanda is largely Christian.

The irony is of targeting asylum seekers accommodation is presumably they will need to be re housed for their safety.

I'm impressed and relieved with starmers stance that it is thuggery.

BashfulClam · 05/08/2024 18:29

It’s disgusting, my colleague is polish and got racist abuse in Glasgow recently. Her husband and children are Scottish, she works and pays tax…someone picked up on her accent and gave her abuse. Absolutely disgusting and I feel quite tearful thinking about my black friends being subjected to this!

They are thick as mince. There is a video about the EDL and the guy says ‘I would have no problem letting them build mosques her if we could go to Mecca and build mosques. I’d like to see a mosque in Mecca’ wtaf??

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 18:33

How awful to be scared because of skin colour or accent. In a supposedly civilised country.

I know crying won't help. I cry with anger. If I could line the fuckers up and whack them with a baseball bat I'd feel better. Yes 2 wrongs don't make a right but they're wicked.

My cousin who is black wanted to take her little daughter swimming today. She said she is now riddled with anxiety that some people won't like her cos of her skin colour. I'm mixed race and I feel the same way.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/08/2024 18:39

Heard some woman on the radio ranting about 'dirty' foreigners and how they are taking all the jobs and money. Wish someone had asked if she works. It was truly disgusting. It is really scary to see what is happening right now. I like in a small rural town which is overwhelmingly white, but not far from where one of the riots was. It is just awful.

SerafinasGoose · 05/08/2024 18:40

Horrible. I received a concerned email from my employers just today, offering support for its workers and urging the many staff and service users from the international community to seek advice from line managers if concerned about their safety on and beyond the premises.

I felt sick just reading it. As if our economy didn't already have enough problems as it is. But how very much worse to be afraid to walk out of your own home and go to work without fearing that the colour of your skin will make you the target of a bunch of violent yobs, not to mention the many others who profess sympathy for their 'cause' (mindless violence and the hating of others who look different from them).

It is heartbreaking.

LaughingElderberry · 05/08/2024 18:42

It's beyond shameful. I posted on another thread earlier today that the protesters that showed up in my area were given short shrift, and that the local community had done a good job in pulling together. But that doesn't change the fear and anxiety that people have about being targeted. It's disgusting and disgraceful.

spellingbeequeen · 05/08/2024 18:43

Awful.

It will be shocking for those people who always claim that there's no racism in the UK to hear this. In a way I am glad that this over racism is no longer covert.

RaininSummer · 05/08/2024 18:46

We are expecting these tossers in my city about now. I can hear a fair few sirens and everyone was advised to get out of town early today and the buses were rerouted.

Soda to hear others are feeling like this but I’m almost relieved I’m not alone in feeling like this as I thought maybe I was overreacting.

I was so irritable at work today I had to log off early. Meant to be going into Manchester on Wednesday and will probably end up being hyper vigilant. Especially as I take the train.

OP thanks for your empathy. It’s nice to see.

Tulip8 · 05/08/2024 18:52

I'm scared for my husband and his police colleagues.

And I'll be really upset if his annual leave is cancelled due to all this. We're about to have our first family holiday in 5 years.

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 18:53

I'm glad crowds have been turning out to clear up.

I'm really hoping for a solution. Hate this.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/08/2024 18:53

@Mls1984btc - mind you, if people are stupid enough to say there is no racism in the UK, you wonder if it is worth talking to them at all. But the absolute shit being trotted out - while mobs potentially burn down buildings with refugees in. It makes me so ashamed.

Bubblesandcakes · 05/08/2024 18:54

Oops that was meant to say : sad to see

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 18:55

@Tulip8 I hope he get his annual leave. I feel for him and his colleagues. It's disgusting how the police have been treated.
