Just been talking to my neighbour. He and his family are Nigerian. They haven't been here that long. Both work. They have small dcs.
He's had to take today off work as he works in a town that's been targeted and he's scared to travel.

I'm in tears I'm so angry. Those bastards wouldn't know how to fucking spell work. Luckily I got inside before I broke down. Dh is also teary. They're the loveliest family. I'm genuinely scared for my African neighbours. There's a lot of families moved here from the south because of a housing shortage. All of them that I've met are decent lovely people. Wish I could say the same for a lot of people who are from here.

We're broken aren't we? What the fuck is to be done?

That's awful OP. Your poor neighbour. Could you do something nice for them? Every little bit of kindness will make a difference e.g. bake them some biscuits, take them a plant, write a lovely message in a card?

I'm scared for my husband and his police colleagues.

And I'll be really upset if his annual leave is cancelled due to all this. We're about to have our first family holiday in 5 years.

Must be an awful time to be in the police and for the families. I'm so sorry.

user1471453601 · 05/08/2024 18:57

Thick as mince indeed.

I recall, years ago, having a conversation with a taxi driver. A nice guy, we'd had many conversations over the years I'd been commuting.

It was shortly after the death of Diana and conspiracy theories were rife. One conspiracy was that she'd been killed by Muslims, angry about her relationship with Dodi. The previous night the taxi driver had been harangued by a drunk customer about how "his lot" had killed "our" princess.

The guy was clearly a Sikh, turban, bracelet and such.

His comment on the customer was not only was the customer a racist, he was also uneducated.

It doesn't help anyone, what these thugs are doing. Sadly, however, it's not new.

The cheering thing is that ordinary people, who are much more tech savvy than me, are identifying these thugs and letting the police and the thugs employers know who they are.

Mammajay · 05/08/2024 18:58

It is awful. What I don't understand is the police retreating from the crowd and one poor policeman being sprayed with a fire hydrant and no obvious action against the thug doing it. I hope the police know what they are doing. I think it is important for us all to show kindness to anyone who feels threatened by these arseholes

I'm glad crowds have been turning out to clear up.

I'm really hoping for a solution. Hate this.

In Bristol we absolutely turned out to see them off. It was about 700 antifacist vs 200 facists. They just looked ridiculous and threw a few empty bottles and cans then ran away.

okydokethen · 05/08/2024 18:28

Shameful indeed, it's disgusting.

If this supposedly links to the horrific killing of the young girls.. why are mosques being targeted? Rwanda is largely Christian.

The irony is of targeting asylum seekers accommodation is presumably they will need to be re housed for their safety.

I'm impressed and relieved with starmers stance that it is thuggery.

It has nothing to with the three children who were killed a week ago.
It's an excuse for the yobs in our society to run riot with the backing of Farage and Tommy Robinson among others.

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 19:00

@BeEasyonYourself that's fantastic 😀

Absolute thuggery. Lock them up and throw away the key.

They were outnumbered in some cases and apparently also told not to inflame matters, I read somewhere (so it must be true 🤔)

kfellover · 05/08/2024 19:02

It’s absolutely disgusting and I feel utterly useless.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 05/08/2024 19:04

The only good news today was the troublemakers in Liverpool were all remanded until the end of August / beginning of September apart from the 14 year old who was bailed.

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 19:06

@Allthehorsesintheworld that's good news.

Some might lose their jobs? Oh wait....

And OP I agree with @Longcommute could you take a cake or something to your neighbours? Maybe offer to do any shopping if they’re really worried about going out? I think a bit of solidarity goes a long way.

needsomewarmsunshine · 05/08/2024 19:09

They want to fight it out? Round the bastards up and dump them in a real war zone, they wouldn't last 5 minutes.
As it is as soon as it rains or gets cold they're head home. Complete cowards.

Haa I was trying to post a video, sorry!

Demonhunter · 05/08/2024 19:09

You know it might not be as bad as they anticipate. I was out shopping yesterday in a retail park right next to the city centre and loads of people of colour out doing their shopping too. I was slyly watching and no one even looked at then the wrong way. In fact I was chatting to a black woman about lampshade and a big bloke who could be deemed quite intimidating looking came down the aisle with his trolley and nearly hit us not looking and apologised to us both. I'm in Sunderland btw which has been all over the news.

Just don't let the thugs win.

When people say that there's no racism in the UK, black people are being over sensitive and prickly this is what many of us know lies beneath the snide remarks and indignities at work.

I'm not a fan of the concept of royalty but when Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry so many of my friends and family started our internal countdown to when the racism would bubble.over.

Even now she's subject to more vitriolic threads and posts than randy Andy ever has been. The vile and petty attacks on her for being brave enough to remove her children from the damage of a country in denial of its racism is in itself illustrating her point.

Lots.of you have come out against the mob, and some posters will claim it's a small minority; but for brown and black people in the UK these psst few days show how fragile it all is

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 05/08/2024 19:12

I am appalled and ashamed to be from the same country as these far right rioters.

They are brainwashed by the right wing press and cunts like Nigel Farage. Their lives get shitter as people like Nigel Farage get richer. They are too stupid to see that though. I hope they go to jail for a long, long time.

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 19:14

@Demonhunter I'm close to Sunderland. Middlesbrough is where my neighbour works.

A friend said he wants to give my neighbours money. He doesn't even know them. I don't know if they'd like my baking I could buy them a cake? If I see the wife soon I'll try to subtly ask if they're OK financially. She has a good job thank goodness.

After the riots in my city on Friday, a lovely guy I know was being interviewed by the BBC outside his mosque on Saturday afternoon. He volunteers to go into schools to talk about inter-faith initiatives, has stood as a councillor, organises peace events, is a school governor - basically every week he must spend hours volunteering for his community. During the interview a white van drove past and the two delightful men yelled out racist abuse at him. He probably does more for his community in a week than most of these thugs do in a lifetime. It's just so upsetting.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/08/2024 18:39

Heard some woman on the radio ranting about 'dirty' foreigners and how they are taking all the jobs and money. Wish someone had asked if she works. It was truly disgusting. It is really scary to see what is happening right now. I like in a small rural town which is overwhelmingly white, but not far from where one of the riots was. It is just awful.

And taking part in things like this won't exactly make you a candidate for any job! Sad and sort of scary how people thing and blame others for issues that more likely down to themselves

Some nice mental gymnastics and whataboutery @DazedNotConfused1
Are there riots in Luton, with violence against white women, Christian churches and destruction of white owned property? 🤔 No and your ‘feelings’ about Luton are not the same as what is actually happening all over England.
