Just been talking to my neighbour. He and his family are Nigerian. They haven't been here that long. Both work. They have small dcs.
He's had to take today off work as he works in a town that's been targeted and he's scared to travel.

I'm in tears I'm so angry. Those bastards wouldn't know how to fucking spell work. Luckily I got inside before I broke down. Dh is also teary. They're the loveliest family. I'm genuinely scared for my African neighbours. There's a lot of families moved here from the south because of a housing shortage. All of them that I've met are decent lovely people. Wish I could say the same for a lot of people who are from here.

We're broken aren't we? What the fuck is to be done?

It's horrible, we are visiting friends in the North West at the weekend and staying in a travellodge in a small town near them and DH is quite worried about it as some Holiday Inns have been targeted by the rioters (DH is Asian and DC are dual heritage)

Hoppinggreen · 05/08/2024 20:19

I had to message my lovely young Indian/American client and tell him to be careful as he headed home as there were suggestions on SM that there would be one of these so called "protests" near the station in our Town. He is here on a 1 year secondment and only arrived on Monday
It was very embarrassing and I felt ashamed of my Town and my country. He was baffled as to why he might be a target

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/08/2024 20:20

In the town where I live we were threatened with a march on Saturday, so the market in the middle of town and quite a lot of shops were closed.

The craven thugs were in a minority because a lot of people turned up to demonstrate against them, so most of them seem simply to have faded back into the woodwork. (And one of the ones who stayed was wearing a "Trump 2024" cap, which struck me as simply weird: does he not know we don't get to vote for the POTUS?)

The more obviously white people turn out to look pityingly at the racists, the better, I feel.

CoffeeLover90 · 05/08/2024 20:27

@alrightluv I'm also near Sunderland, ashamed to say. I know people who worship in the targeted mosque. They probably paid more tax than the fuckwits in that crowd. A Muslim family nearby seem to be hiding. They were often sitting outside and the kids playing out. Not the last week though. I know they're home as I've seen windows open and washing on the line. I'd love to check on them but know their English isn't good and I'm not sure if they'd appreciate it. I just miss their child's laughter when playing football in the street.

It's heartbreaking.

dawngreen · 05/08/2024 20:27

I feel like our country has been broken for a while. They are always saying the jails are full. So what punishments will the rioters get. The EDL leader was seen in a rally, then he scarpered off to Greece to hide. Sick of the damage to our towns. Don't know what the answer is any more. If the army gets brought in or a more aggressive response is used. Then it will be government picking on us.

Shut down social media would probably be our one chance to stop the madness.

Yes this.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/08/2024 20:30

I was supposed to meet up with SIL and DN at my hometown this weekend.
All off now as DN’s partner is Nigerian with 3 mixed race children and he doesn’t feel safe coming due to recent rascist rioters. It’s just vile and shameful!

Same town I live in by the sound of it. Only about 8 thugs 'protestors' turned up on the train and were massively outnumbered by the counter protestors, and just ,milled about then went home again. But lots of businesses in the town lost a Saturday's living because they had to close to be on the safe side, and there was a heavy police presence (which doesn't come for free) and it was a waste of everyone's time and money all round. These twats are just spitting their dummies because the right comprehensively lost the election, and the UK has rejected their small-minded parochial racism, and it'll blow over, but I hope they get stiff penalties, all the same.

Wow, four whole thanks! You’re right, the silent majority really do support these thugs.

Horrible. I received a concerned email from my employers just today, offering support for its workers and urging the many staff and service users from the international community to seek advice from line managers if concerned about their safety on and beyond the premises.

I felt sick just reading it. As if our economy didn't already have enough problems as it is. But how very much worse to be afraid to walk out of your own home and go to work without fearing that the colour of your skin will make you the target of a bunch of violent yobs, not to mention the many others who profess sympathy for their 'cause' (mindless violence and the hating of others who look different from them).

It is heartbreaking.

We must work at the same place. It was a lovely email and one that filled me with some hope as a brown woman.

It would certainly stop fuelling the fire!

We are expecting these tossers in my city about now. I can hear a fair few sirens and everyone was advised to get out of town early today and the buses were rerouted.

Which city was this? I would have thought this was starting to calm down by now. I absolutely hate this. Nothing has happened in my city yet, but time will tell. I feel scared for my daughter’s future - what will this country look like when she is an adult?

I've noticed that the kids aren't playing out tonight, one of the little girls loves to ride up and down the pavement on her sparkly pink bike. She is an absolute sweetheart and I feel so sad on her behalf about the sort of society she is growing up in which contains such bigoted people.

Most of the Sunderland rioters that have been in court today have been placed on remand until early September. I assume they'd only do that if they are going to receive a custodial sentence.

My favourite was in response to her arrest video. "The absolute clip of her. Like if you ordered Vicky Pollard off Wish".

@TattiePants This comment has made my evening ! if you would be happy to PM me the name of the FB page, I know someone else who works in the NHS who would really appreciate this at the moment !

Offering a very small measure of hope for our children (and in my case children's children): when I was young it was the teddy boys, then it was the mods and rockers, then it was the skinheads, then it was the footie hooligans. (And back in history it was the mohawks.) There were also the Nottiing Hill Riots, as written about by Colin McInnes in Absolute Beginners.

Somehow in spite of the worst that the dregs can manage to do to us, society drags itself together and carries on being, on the whole, slightly nicer than it is nasty, slightly more tolerant than it is bigoted, and just a bit more inclined to argue against horrible little scrotes.

Hoppinggreen · 05/08/2024 20:42

We have a street kitchen in our town, around 50% of contributions each week come from the Asian communities.
When there was flooding in a nearby (white rural) area mosques from out town and others took bus loads of volunteers to help with the clean up.
And these are the people these vile racists want to "send home"

Over a hundred people turned up this morning to help the clear up in Wath, Rotherham. Families, older people, teens. All shocked that their small town ( just north of Rotherham) has become a focus for hatred. So much broken glass, fence panels ripped out. But immense cheeriness & getting stuck in to take back the town. V British.

alrightluv · 05/08/2024 20:48

@Efrogwraig that's fantastic they rallied. It's been happening all over.

The courts are having an effect. We had horrendous acts in Belfast on Saturday evening - two businesses burned out nearly setting fire to flats above. Four of the perps were in court this morning - middle aged men. There was a protest planned for this evening outside a hotel, causing a lot of consternation, and only seven people turned up, stayed for fifteen minutes then trailed off home again. 😂

Packingcubesqueen · 05/08/2024 20:50

If you can’t attend the counter protests donate money to your local refugee charities. If we call donate it will send a message.
