Anxious about trump presidency

Is anyone else lying awake at night worrying about this?

I don't live in the states but I am really anxious about this. I'm anxious for everyone living over there yes very much so, but I'm anxious about the much greater possibility of world war, I'm anxious about all the cuts to funding for various international issues in particular climate change initiatives. We're already fucked on that front but if there's any hope for our children we need the power of the states. The Project 2025 list of targets is like something from a dystopian novel, it's really frightening.

I'm also very nervous that the way the new government will structure the legal system they will essentially create a dictatorship that will never be able to be dismantled - they have basically said they will try to do this and tried last time (but failed).

Can anyone talk me down. I can't see anything positive here.

There is no positives in a trump presidency. And biden refusing to step down isn't helping.

I don't know who I'm most angry at.

GrazingSheep · 16/07/2024 22:32

And VP Vance is the icing on the cake

Justbetweenus · 16/07/2024 22:32

I think you need to step away from the news. There’s absolutely nothing you can do about whether or not he’s elected, nor about how he chooses to conduct himself if he is elected so there’s no point literally losing sleep over US politics. If he is elected, all you can do is trust that his worst impulses are controlled by those around him (kind of like last time) and it’s only 4 years. Switch off OP if it’s affecting you badly.

That is good advice but I don't even really watch the news. It's just everywhere I look and even if I don't read any more about it I still know if that makes sense. You're right, there's fuck all I can do about it so there's no point worrying. There's fuck all I can do about my children's future with climate change either but I can't help but worry about that too! 😭 I just have this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. These two men together are so dangerous.

Do you know he’s already been president for 4 years? It wasn’t that bad (well, apart from trusting Fauci). He certainly wasn’t pro war.

ChaToilLeam · 16/07/2024 23:37

He is appalling and I am amazed anyone can bring themselves to vote for him. But then the Democrats aren’t putting up a great campaign with Biden. In all that vast and populous nation, are these really the best two candidates they can come up with?

understatedeleganza · 16/07/2024 23:40

He wants to be mates with all the dictators. He wants to pull US military support from Europe. Who knows what impulsive decisions he might make under pressure, especially now that his VP isn't a counterbalance.

And have you seen the list of project 2025 goals?

OP posts:
understatedeleganza · 16/07/2024 23:41

Yes exactly. The democrats have basically just rolled over. Which is even scarier

OP posts:
5byfive · 16/07/2024 23:50

Trump has denied any links to project 2025.

SpuytenDuyvil · 16/07/2024 23:52

It's a terrible terrible prospect. Most reasonable Americans are terrified at the thought.

understatedeleganza · 17/07/2024 00:00

I would be absolutely beside myself if I lived there. Hasn't seen that he's denied links to project 2025 but everything on it fits with his ideology. Even if it was half as bad as what's on there it would be tweeting and devastating

OP posts:
understatedeleganza · 17/07/2024 00:01

Oh ffs terrifying not tweeting. The app won't let me edit

You obviously have nothing at all in your life to be worried about. Lucky you.

You know people can be worried about lots of things at the same time, right?

Wishicouldlovemyself · 17/07/2024 00:03

You must be looking for it in some way or on some level because this is the 1st I've heard about it, and I don't (intentionally) read news of any sort. I do go online but never to look at the news.

SingleDadReally · 17/07/2024 00:04

Whilst a Trump Presidency will be awful, he’ll actually be restricted massively by the US Constitution. Most of the moronic blowviating he does is just to give his even more moronic supporters a hard on for the few minutes or seconds they can maintain it. The US President has much less executive power than a British Prime Minister, who with a big majority is effectively a dictator. Even if the Republikkkans win the Presidency, Senate and House this is only likely to last until the mid term elections in 2026. Trump will then be in the last 2 years of his term and without a congressional majority effectively a lame duck President. The US is also much more devolved than Britain, with the states having much more power. Liberal states will not accept any ludicrous far right culture war nonsense from evangelical loonies.

rosieandjimandduck · 17/07/2024 00:05

I would save my worries for people ( mostly women) who do not live in a democracy and have very few freedoms or rights as the American public.

understatedeleganza · 17/07/2024 00:06

This is the first you've heard about it? 😳

I'm generally up to date on major world issues I suppose yes. People in my life discuss issue like politics, history, medicine, science etc. So major news issues do find their way to me.

And yes, it is not only possible but common to worry about more than one thing at once 🥴

I lie awake worrying about these people too. And do not want more of them in the world

This is the kind of reassurance I need.

But is it true? He's already managed to appoint Supreme Court justices who'll do whatever he wants. He's adjusted parts of the constitution already. He's a convinced felon but still able to be president. He has plans to adjust the laws further to protect him from any future repercussions for his behaviour...

Trump has denied any links to project 2025.

He's also denied knowing anything about who is behind it, which is simply unbelievable. Especially as he spoke at a dinner sponsored by the Heritage Foundation and said

"This is a great group, and they’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do and what your movement will do when the American people give us a colossal mandate to save America.”

It's weird that Vought, one of the key authors of Project 2025, is also the Republican National Committee’s platform policy director.

Like the right to abortion?

Livelovebehappy · 17/07/2024 00:16

He has been president before? And the world didn’t implode. And let’s be honest here, Biden is a far more dangerous proposition. He’s very weak, and clearly not capable of running a country like America. Other dangerous world leaders in countries such as China, North Korea, the Middle East and Russia must be laughing their arses off currently - they will see Biden’s weakness as a way to exploit any situation.

Cecilly · 17/07/2024 00:20

I feel anxious about world events sometimes too. During the last US election I had to leave all social media because it was really affecting me. I've only just recently come back to Mumsnet and Twitter. I find when it gets too much I need to focus on the here and now. If I don't have the power to change it I leave it in hands of God. I narrow my world right down to myself, my family and my community.

Fair point. But I still think maybe try to get things in perspective.
