Sorry we learnt earlier in the thread Kier cannot possibly be affectionate to his wife! It's not allowed.

HannibalHeyes · 10/07/2024 22:20

Diane Abbott has always had a slightly querulous voice, even back to her days doing Andrew Neil's dreadful show.

BIWI · 10/07/2024 22:20

I know that Diane Abbott has Type 1 diabetes - but I wonder if she has Parkinsons as well? The shake in her voice could be attributable to nerves, but you could see her hands shaking as well. I doubt, tbh, that she was nervous, as she gave that speech - it seemed - without any notes. So more likely something more physical/neurological. Sadly Sad

Keir is going to Berlin Sunday.

Just imagine if they win 😁. Fantastic photo ops for him. And he's an actual football fan. ⚽

Apparently we can play football now we have a Labour government.

Turns out the shite we sat through at the start of the tournament was Rishi’s fault too.

He was relying on messages during todays game as no phones allowed for security reasons

I blame Wilders for the Dutch defeat

That was my thought. Her speech seemed very slow and careful. A bit like Biden’s sometimes does because of his stutter.

Whatever it is I don’t think she looked well. Or certainly frailer than I remember her being.

placemats · 10/07/2024 22:36

It was never a penalty but who cares. Well done England.

Looking forward to Sunday.

prettybird · 10/07/2024 22:36

I'm not watching any news now that England are through to the finals of the Euros Shock

Don't think I'll be able to thole the wall-to-wall coverage Hmm

I could mention that Spain lost to Scotland in both legs of the qualifiers Wink

(I'll admit to liking Southgate but hate the media coverage of England which always always goes back to 1966 Angry, even when Scotland was playing Hmm)

BIWI · 10/07/2024 22:38

It might have been a dodgy penalty, but I think it's swing and roundabouts - I'm sure we've been denied one/them before!

placemats · 10/07/2024 22:40

I just hope there's no jingoistic nonsense from the media if England do win in Germany, though I doubt it. Will sour the win for me.

Shouldn’t he be focusing on the government not bickering and falling apart. Or is that Dick Schoof’s responsibility now?

BIWI · 10/07/2024 22:55

At least we're not going to be playing Germany!

I think they are trying to side line him as much as possible. Schoof is like the headmaster it seems

The German Embassy tweets -

Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the G̶e̶r̶m̶a̶n̶s̶ English always win.

All the best for the final on Sunday, England! #EURO2024

She has type 2.

VimtoVimto · 11/07/2024 07:57

I’d wondered if Dianne Abbot was unwell whic was why it wasn’t expected she’d stand again.

I’m not sure the 70 year olds I know are an entirely representative group. They are all quite physically active. More than people much younger in many cases.

My dad is in his 70's and goes to the gym nearly every day - sometimes twice! That's despite having cancer and chemo a few years ago and nursing my mum through hers until her death just over 2 years ago.

He's probably the opposite end of representative.

Most of the ones I know are generally fit and well and managing and not like I remember my grandparents at the same age.

I know a few who have health problems which are disabling.

Due to my age (40's) most of us now have parents in that age bracket.

absquatulize · 11/07/2024 08:28

There has been some comment about Starmer's wife going to the NATO summit. Oh for the halycon days when all we had to worry about was But Jeremy Corbyn.
Being married to a world leader must be a pretty challenging and at times lonely role, the people that you have most in common with will be the other spouses, so the opportunity to spend some time with them is probably quite valuable.

newnamethanks · 11/07/2024 08:36

I'm surprised there's been so much focus on Mrs Starmer. Not like the right wing media to miss the opportunity to trash Angela Rayner "UK trembles on brink of catastrophe as Deputy PM left in charge while Starmers live it up in USA" etc. Keeping it for weekend perhaps.

That coalition won't make it to Christmas.

At the start of the tournament I put a tenner on Spain winning!😁

Agree about the coverage.
