It's not the weapon though is it? It's the man on the other end of it, gun, crossbow or kitchen knife Although it would appear some tighter regulation wouldn't go amiss. Dreadful tragedy, poor family and relatives, indescribably awful.

Just seen who the OP is. Really surprised and a little disappointed.

I was surprised too.

True, but look at what banning handguns achieved after Dunblane. There are many reasons our murder rate remains pretty low but Gun laws are right up there.

It's not the weapon , but the man is a thing a lot of Americans say...

newnamethanks · 10/07/2024 16:44

I know, piggy, please don't think I am a supporter of the 'Right to Bear Arms'. I think crossbows should be banned, or as tightly regulated, as handguns now are. They serve no useful purpose, nobody needs one other than for sport which could operate under the same restraints as handguns. Misogynistic femicide is the result of the man with the weapon in his hand. I see no reason to make that easier for them.

It is also the access to a weapon, at the moment when one is of the mind to do the act. If that access is much more limited, the moment passes and perhaps everyone stays safe.

Piggywaspushed · 10/07/2024 16:52

Yes, hopefully so. It's terrifying, truly.

SerendipityJane · 10/07/2024 16:56

Sadly returning to recent events, maybe the best way to deal with Reform is just put them on as many committees as possible. Possibly remembering that the Devil finds work for idle hands (or in their case, minds).

It should be simple enough to do it in such a way that their egos are stroked as they slide into the oblivion of the "sub-committee (England) for standardisation of paper weights in executive departments".

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/07/2024 17:26

it’s not the weapon, it’s the man has always seemed like a good argument for restricting the man’s access to weapons to me. Sports aside, nobody needs access to a crossbow, or a semi automatic in their lives.

Director of policy for The Kings Fund has been given a position in DHSC by the looks of it. More adults in the room.

Another day without any government corruption as far as I know.

"Director of policy for The Kings Fund has been given a position in DHSC by the looks of it. More adults in the room. "
That's a very good appointment.

"it’s not the weapon, it’s the man has always seemed like a good argument for restricting the man’s access to weapons to me. Sports aside, nobody needs access to a crossbow, or a semi automatic in their lives. "
Quite.

A handy guide if you are joining Reform.

Just catching g up on the thread. Awful news from Bushey. Just terrible but devastatingly familiar. .Why on earth did anyone need a crossbow.

Starmer is looking very good on the world stage. I don't know about everyone else but I am loving being back a square one.

More Tory drama.
🚨 NEW: More Tory MPs are demanding another vote for the head of the 1922 committee

One senior Tory backbencher says, “the 1922 committee are incapable of organising a social event in a beer production factory”

NoDishiForRishi · 10/07/2024 18:32

Just had a bbc news notification, the police have captured Kyle Clifford.

That poor family.

yes thank goodness, absolutely awful the poor family heart goes to them hopefully the powers at be will tighten up any laws that restricts access any type of these weapons.

Well yesterday there was a fatal shooting in Walsall. Despite guns being banned.

I'm not a natural "ban it ! ban it !" person. I make an exception for guns because the ease of use vs. chance of killing someone is ludicrously high. However guns are tools too. Even if just for the police to protect the public.

Are they calling each other thick?

newnamethanks · 10/07/2024 19:22

That wouldn't be an argument, just a couple of factual statements.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/07/2024 19:36

Obviously the Tories have decided the election wasn’t the end and we need another series.

In better news:

Labour government to put failing water companies in “special measures” to make them clean up Britain’s waterways with new legislation expected by industry - banning bonuses for worst polluters - potential criminal charges for repeat offenders - tougher monitoring of sewage outflows
