When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

Aren't most celebs really playing a character? Some more than others, but I don't think most share all their personal backgrounds, why would they?

mrsveev · 24/06/2024 20:44

I think it's very important to tell the truth, show integrity.
You didn't live life alone - people went to same school with you, etc. And people talk. So unless you want to be known as a lier I think you cannot just make up your story.

9GreenBottles · 24/06/2024 20:51

They may be playing a role but if that role is "poor little me" then I think it's a bit questionable.

I went to the same school as 3 women who were part of a clique that was very full of themselves and darlings of the drama department. Each have gone on to success although one more so than the others. I read an interview about how she had been bullied at school. She may have been disliked but that was because she and her friends acted like they were above everyone else. I never spoke to her or her friends but I knew people in their classes and it wasn't their recollection.

Probably a common one but I went to school with someone who is married to a well-known sporting star so she appears in magazine spreads etc with him. She was in my class at school but is now several years younger than me!

TheThingIsYeah · 24/06/2024 20:51

A lot of people in the public eye are like this aren't they? Sportsmen and women, comedians, actors, they like to push the narrative that "[insert profession] saved me from a life of crime" but a quick Google more often than not reveals a well connected and/or a moneyed background. Private schools also feature heavily, despite trying to give the impression they were a kid on the video for Another Brick In the Wall.

Everyone in celebrity world wants to say they had it hard and no help. It's so tedious. Like admitting you have privilege undermines your work?

I went to school with a champion ballroom dancer who began as 1 year younger than me at school and was about 5 years younger by the time she retired from dancing!

A good friend of mine went to school with someone who used to be in a soap years ago. Anyway my friend said she was an absolute cow at school. Her nice girl imagine was uncovered thankfully when she tried to twist something against another celeb. Thankfully karma made sure she’s pretty obsolete now.

Yes I have a minor celeb who was in my class/school from age 7-16. Except now she's 3 years younger than me according to Wikipedia...

Beautifulbythebay · 24/06/2024 21:17

An actor I went to school with us has shaved a year or 2 off his age.... Wikipedia has the wrong year down and articles shed another year off.

I have a very similar experience with someone I went to school with who claims they were bullied at school (not an actor but someone who regularly appears on tv)

My friends older sister was a model. Last time she was interviewed she was 5 years younger than me. There's more but my lips are sealed 🤐

Just say who they are

Onomatofear · 24/06/2024 21:52

A childhood family friend of mine was a minor celebrity who is 41 now but says she was born in 2000. 🧐

exactly say who they are.

If its the truth there's no comeback on you.

LakeTiticaca · 24/06/2024 21:54

When Cliff Richard came to fame as a young man, my mother swore blind he was the same age as her.
As time moved on he seemed to lose about 5 years off his age 😆😆

ApocalypseNowt · 24/06/2024 21:56

Not a celeb but someone I went to school with went into the military then wrote a book about his experiences.

His school days were written in the vein of "lads lad didn't do well at school but flourished in the army". He was from a very well to do family, by far the cleverest boy in my year, excelled academically Grin
