When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

threeisacharm18 · 24/06/2024 20:38

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

Someone who I knew at university is now in the public eye. Not massively famous or anything, but she tells loads of lies and half truths about what went on at university - about things which I was present at and know to be utter shite.

I wonder if it is the person who instantly doesn't to mind when I read this!!! 😂

I meant "comes to mind" - where's the edit button gone?

Everyone in celebrity world wants to say they had it hard and no help. It's so tedious. Like admitting you have privilege undermines your work?

I agree with this. Privileged people who acknowledge their good fortune come across so much better than the fake sob story types. Acknowledging you lucky to be were born into advantageous circumstances does not mean you haven't worked hard alongside that good luck.

The humble beginnings act is a massive selling point. It helps them connect with their audience as the majority of people were not born into money. Ed Sheerean, Kid Rock, and 'Jenny from the Block' all tried (and failed) to present themselves as humble working class.

X Factor contestant who is from these parts made a big thing about how she was bullied at school and it's made her stronger...

Funny that everyone else remembers she was the bully. 🤔

I know who this is!

novocaine4thesoul · 24/06/2024 23:06

OOF, laughing about some of these characters especially the age-shifters - but the opposite of "lying about your story" is "telling the truth about your story", and it not really being a very nice story, and it still catching you out. CJ from eggheads !!. I thought he was a bit arrogant on the show and never really warmed to him, but bloody hell !

Probably a common one but I went to school with someone who is married to a well-known sporting star so she appears in magazine spreads etc with him. She was in my class at school but is now several years younger than me!

Yes I have one of these too! She’s about to turn 40 but according to her wiki page she’s only 35 🤔

My friends older sister was a model. Last time she was interviewed she was 5 years younger than me. There's more but my lips are sealed 🤐

Oh c'mon!! You can't leave us hanging like that!!

itsallabitofamystery · 24/06/2024 23:07

I went to school with a "celebrity" who married young and had two children. She left her husband and children behind and moved away where she met a celebrity, married him and had children. She then went on to marry again and had a few more children.. I think there's also a baby in between but I can't remember. Yet the two that she left behind with the guy we went to school with are never mentioned. She will always say she has X amount of kids, when in fact there are two more. I just don't understand it.

They may be playing a role but if that role is "poor little me" then I think it's a bit questionable.

I went to the same school as 3 women who were part of a clique that was very full of themselves and darlings of the drama department. Each have gone on to success although one more so than the others. I read an interview about how she had been bullied at school. She may have been disliked but that was because she and her friends acted like they were above everyone else. I never spoke to her or her friends but I knew people in their classes and it wasn't their recollection.

I think people tend to have different perspectives and just because you haven't been in their shoes, it doesn't mean they are lying. (Except about obvious things like age). General comment for the whole thread.

I hate to say that I often acted like I was above everyone else at times at high school. I was really bullied and unsupported by parents and anyone else in primary years so, by the time I got to high school, emotionally insulating myself from everyone else was just how I protected myself. If everyone was at arms length, they couldn't touch me and I was safe. If people were to say I thought I was above them then that would be a valid observation on their part, but there were reasons behind it that don't make the rest of my experience untrue.

When Cliff Richard came to fame as a young man, my mother swore blind he was the same age as her.
As time moved on he seemed to lose about 5 years off his age 😆😆

He has always been born in 1940, dont think he has changed his age

origin stories are often lies - but also we all have our own narration about who we are and what is significant in our pasts. I’d not be that thrilled if someone I was at school with decades ago thought they knew more about my story than I do.

Yes, exactly. If you think back to everyone in your year at school, their narratives of their lives at the time would be very different, even leaving aside the pleasure people seem to take in undercutting a minor celebrity’s version of events.

Even think of your own family. I have four siblings, and our versions of our childhood (same house, same parents) differs wildly.

Yeah the "I am just like you" also hits back against the Nepo Babies "they are just famous because of their mum/dad" thing.

😳 well I want to know who this is I mean you are not going to tell me but my god that's shocking.

My sister was in the same class as the girl who was originally hired to play teen Bethany Platt in Corrie. We were amazed when we saw she'd got it - and even more so when we read the age she was claiming to be, as she was obviously the same age as my sister!

She ended up getting found out through old Twitter posts, and the role was taken away from her.

Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy!

That's what happened with the girl who actually played her?

PandaCory · 24/06/2024 23:14

I've read a couple of interviews with an actor who went to my school and he was actually quite honest about his childhood/school days. I know his mum pretty well and she'd kick his arse if he lied, lol.

itsallabitofamystery · 24/06/2024 23:15

@Mrsjayy I won't say, just like all the other posters won't reveal. For all I know she might have a wonderful relationship with those two kids - who would be young adults now. She just perhaps doesn't publicise it. But when she says how many kids she has, it's certainly minus those two.

A childhood family friend of mine was a minor celebrity who is 41 now but says she was born in 2000. 🧐

That surely isn’t credible, what 41 year old looks 23? 🤣

This completely.

We all have different reference points too. As an example of that, my DH once insisted how poor they were growing up. I said to him, "Your parents owned two properties, had private pensions, two cars. To me, that is rich!" We never had anything like that in our family. Not even close.

She probably doesnt but thinks she does after having lots and lots of botox and fillers!

Its like Madonna, wasnt she 38 for about 5 years and then the same when she was pushing 50? If it wasnt her it was another big name.

Some celebrities don't even go by their own names. Based on that, I'm not surprised if they lie about other things. They're projecting a character in public.

If someone else is already registered with Equity in that name, then they can't use their own name, and have to use another one in their professional life. I found out quite a few 'names' whilst working in an associated industry a few years ago.

Some of them just want to make a name up though, I agree.
