When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

I used to work with someone who came from an acting family. We’re not talking dynasties here, but if I said so and so, who played this role in that series or film, you’d probably know who they were. All different surnames so you wouldn’t realise they were connected unless you combed their Wikipedia pages.

Anyway, he was very indiscreet and told me things about a-list celebs and household names that made my jaw drop. I don’t have the money for legal bills so absolutely won’t be repeating any of them, but if half of what he’s said can be believed, the majority of British actors and entertainers appearing on our screens are lying, backstabbing sociopaths who would set fire to their grandmothers if it got them the job they wanted. I’m sure it’s not just Brits, but they were the people he knew.

An old colleague went to high school with an international male pop star, I was told he wasn't that friendly at school to people who weren't in his friend group and he was full of himself knowing he would be famous one day! Well he wasn't wrong!!

BobbyBiscuits · 24/06/2024 23:29

There's one celebrity who lied about being a bereaved child to flog a godawful kids book, lied about attending one school, lied about their age..all for no relevant reason. Other than being a massive narc.

Probably a common one but I went to school with someone who is married to a well-known sporting star so she appears in magazine spreads etc with him. She was in my class at school but is now several years younger than me!

Yes, I know a couple of people like this! I happen to know the wife of a very (I mean very, you would instantly know him) famous man. (She isn’t herself particularly famous, but gets the odd interview/column about herself etc.)

At the time she was two school years above me; and now she is apparently at least five years younger than I am 🤣 (And with what looks like a truckload of plastic surgery to boot!)

Keir Starmers dad was a toolmaker. Dont know if anyone knows that as he never mentions it.

Kier Starmer’s dad made a tool 😂😂😂🤣

She probably doesnt but thinks she does after having lots and lots of botox and fillers!

Its like Madonna, wasnt she 38 for about 5 years and then the same when she was pushing 50? If it wasnt her it was another big name.

I think Madonna’s original publicised birthdate was 1959, before rumours began flying around that it was 1957. At some point, 1958 became a sort of “halfway house” and seems to have been her accepted birthdate ever since.

A weird one is Margot Robbie. According to the publicity when she was first in Neighbours, she was born in 1986. She later said (and still says) that was a misprint that spread online. Her “official” year of birth is now 1990. Obviously I’ve no idea which is true - but the weird thing is, I distinctly remember when the misprint story first came out, the new official birth year was 1992! Yet I can’t find any record of that online now…

She has changed her name now! Goes by the name of Roxanne Carion on IMDB

Edited

"Hmm, well, I've had a great deal of bad press following that infamous TV 'episode'; plus having a surname that sounds like what B&Q deliver a builder's bag of rough gravel on isn't the most glamorous, is it? Oh well, time for a new leaf and a fresh start - beginning with a new surname, of course. Something elegant, noble and just so beautiful. Yep, that's definitely it: gotta be the one that sounds just like a word to describe the decaying flesh of dead animals!"

An actress who went to boarding school but loves to talk about how she worked as a cleaner.

Oscar winning actress by any chance? I think I know who this is

@KarenSmithsWeatherBoobs

Oooo yes please!
I have always wondered ...

DH says Paul Potts was older than him so didn’t know him that well but he doesn’t recall him being notably bullied or a bully himself. His younger (twin) siblings were bullied, according to DH. He does say the whole family were a bit ‘weird’.

Mrsjayy · 24/06/2024 23:39

Margot Robbie is definitely older than 34 .

I remember Anastasia said she was 3/4 younger than her actual age because when she first started singing the record company said she was too.old.

Used to feel bad for a lad I knew in our mid-teens. His elder brother was an fantasist who was convinced that he'd be a big rock star one day.
He lives not far from where he grew up, still goes to the football and the local pubs.
His current band has sold 40 million records while he's been with them, so the careers teacher and the rest of us have been proved wrong.

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 24/06/2024 23:41

DampDust · 24/06/2024 23:08

He has always been born in 1940, dont think he has changed his age

Yep, his core demographic has grown old with him, so they would know if he tried that anyway.

I really don't think his unique selling point is that he is a youngster; younger-looking for his age, maybe (with... a little help), but he's not going to lose any fans or earning potential now by admitting that he isn't 'only' 60.

Sam Fender?

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 24/06/2024 23:43

Many years ago I knew an American student who was very wealthy and educated in a prestigious private school. Her classmate went on to be a very successful singer. The singer, a beautiful black woman from an educated upper middle class family, developed a backstory about growing up in then projects and started using street slang in her songs. My pal absolutely hated her!

Friends who went to school with Chris Packham, his stories about being bullied do not ring true with those that grew up with him. Not entirely convinced with the Autistic diagnosis either.

Sorry didnt realise that you are the MN police!

Cant as he lives very close to me and I would rather not have my address out there. But I consider myself chastised. Do you feel better now?

So why bother posting? Absolutely pointless. The thread isn't titled "Guess the Celeb"

Not too far away from where Sam grew up, but old enough to be his dad - twice as old.

But isn’t it just as likely this guy was a gossip who enjoyed the shock value of passing on hearsay, rumour, and everyone’s worst moments, all dyed the blackest possible hue? There’s nowhere near as much cachet in saying ‘X is quite nice, really’.

DH used to work with a non-acting/showbiz Fox of the acting dynasty, went to various parties and family events, and said they seemed quite ordinary, allowing for money and a certain amount of luvviness, and says there are way more nutters in his own family (composed mostly of delivery and taxi drivers, cleaners and retail workers).

And the two (now very famous) actors I was at university with appear to present themselves in interviews as having been much as I remember them then, and they are the ‘right’ age compared to mine.

Jaberwocky123 · 25/06/2024 00:19

Rachel Stevens from S Club right? Has this already been said?

Iloveespressomartiniseveryday · 25/06/2024 00:32

I went to high school with a sports star, not as famous as some but played for England in their field and they were awful to me at school. We had a blazing row once because they were just being horrible to me in class for no reason and I admit to saying a few choice words back in retaliation. In our year book they said their dream job would be playing for England in their field, which they went on to do, which I was happy for them, but also pissed off because it seems arseholes seem to get their way, even when they're not famous!!

Zippedeedooda · 25/06/2024 00:47

I’ve name changed because I’m naming the celebrity.
You may not have heard of him he’s not an actor or singer he started the Manhattan Loft Corperation and Yoo
Mega millionaire…..John Hitchcox

Times article ( it could have been the Guardian to be honest ) interview
He states

My sister is an Architect….no she’s not she’s an architectural assistant as never qualified.
My dad was an award winning architect. No he never won any awards.

This irks me because the title of architect is protected and why do people have to lie about their achievements or there families anyway.
