When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

I've never looked at Hannah Waddingham the same way since reading a MNers account of her less than positive school experiences of her. It was on one of those 'worse celeb you've ever met' threads.

No, you can't believe everything you read on the internet but the MNer came across as believable imo.

I was at school with a famous actor. Turned into a total dick when fame first hit, has now dialled it back down and doesnt really do the celeb thing. But when he was in his dick phase he did an interview where he implied he worked hard to get away from his sink estate and get successful.

A) no he didnt, he was best mates with a guy who went on to be a v successful director who gave him a massive leg up by casting him as a favour as he was dying on his arse at auditions. He is doing well now as he is a bit of a Hugh Grant, ie he plays himself so all of his characters are the same just with a different background.
B) it wasnt a sink estate at all
C) the incident of "violence" that he gave as an example of living near the postoffice that had its window put through....well that was true, but it was his dad who did it when he was pissed and tried to chuck a road cone at his mate and it slipped out of his hand at the wrong moment!

D) Name him ffs or dont bother posting 🙄

Sorry didnt realise that you are the MN police!

Cant as he lives very close to me and I would rather not have my address out there. But I consider myself chastised. Do you feel better now?

I was at school with someone who is now part of the far-right world. Part of their schtick is that they "dropped out of school" at 16. Not according to the upper-sixth yearbook I've got here, sunshine.

Oh tell us that one. They don't deserve an protection.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/06/2024 22:49

Keir Starmers dad was a toolmaker. Dont know if anyone knows that as he never mentions it.

jdjrkmddmmm · 24/06/2024 22:49

X Factor contestant who is from these parts made a big thing about how she was bullied at school and it's made her stronger...

Funny that everyone else remembers she was the bully. 🤔

I read an interview a while back with a man I was at school with who is now an actor. It was all about growing up poor on the mean streets of London etc. We grew up in an affluent suburb, went to a good school and his family are absolutely loaded. Just trying to sound interesting or edgy I guess.

Didn’t James Arthur claim in his X-Factor sob story that he’d been brought up in care - only for it to turn out it had been for about a week while his parents were divorcing?

ManchesterLu · 24/06/2024 22:51

My sister was in the same class as the girl who was originally hired to play teen Bethany Platt in Corrie. We were amazed when we saw she'd got it - and even more so when we read the age she was claiming to be, as she was obviously the same age as my sister!

She ended up getting found out through old Twitter posts, and the role was taken away from her.

Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy!

RiverF · 24/06/2024 22:51

I think people's experiences can be very different, even in the same school/town.

In my recollection, my school was perfectly "nice". I was in top sets and was in class with children who wanted to learn, from "nice" families.

My friend, who was in lower sets, remembers a completely lawless school and she's probably right too.

A good friend of mine went to school with someone who used to be in a soap years ago. Anyway my friend said she was an absolute cow at school. Her nice girl imagine was uncovered thankfully when she tried to twist something against another celeb. Thankfully karma made sure she’s pretty obsolete now.

I wonder if it is the person who instantly doesn't to mind when I read this!!! 😂

I went to school with absolutely nobody who you'll ever have heard of, but this thread reminded me of an article I read about Liz Truss making out her school to have been terrible whereas the journalist who was there at the same time as her accused her of willfully misrepresenting the facts:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jul/18/liz-truss-roundhay-school-foreign-secretary-education

Liz Truss made up complete and utter rubbish about what is a brilliant school that sent a lot of pupils to RG and Oxbridge - pissed a lot of ex pupils off as it’s a really great school. Funnily enough no one remembered her

WaitingForMojo · 24/06/2024 22:53

What’s with the ‘humble beginnings’ act?! It seems a common theme. I was at school with a minor journalist who occasionally has opinion pieces published in national newspapers… she published a piece a few years ago along the lines of ‘we didn’t have much but we had each other and our parents read to us every day… we were poor but our parents instilled in us a love of words’ … lovely, except her parents were both fairly middle class and on a decent income.

dontflakeout · 24/06/2024 22:55

I went to school with a well-known celeb who claims to be from a specific city. They have the accent too.

Except they're not, they're from the much smaller, far less interesting place I'm from. Back then I knew them quite well and I know they are not from the city they claim. No idea how they got the accent either! 😘

Moneys on roxanne pallet and the Ryan thomas 'punch'

Yes its quite obvious, that was horrendous wasn't it I can't believe she thought she'd get away with it!

I went to school with a now retired footballer he said he was really in poverty and had a rags to riches story he didn't he lived an ordinary working class life Like most of us did.

I have heard many, many stories about her.

Aladdinzane · 24/06/2024 22:57

Is it maybe that once you have experience "the other side" money, the privilege that and celebrity brings, the privileges you are able to buy your kids, that an ordinary background might seem like poverty.?

Or maybe that's generous.

Oh a few well known Scottish people claim they come from.Glagow but they don't they may have lived in Glasgow but didn't originally come from there.

Maybe, the perspective goes a bit wonky.

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/06/2024 23:01

One of the Lucy Beale actresses used to bully my sister in primary school for being overweight. Now the only time I see her is when she is half naked in the tabloids being proud of her new post-pregnancy flab, sorry - 'curves' and talking about body positivity

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/06/2024 23:01

I didn't grow up with anyone famous, but I am absolutely certain that Kelly Brook was a lot more than 2 years older than me when she started out. I was at school watching her on Big Breakfast and thought she was beautiful - there's no way I wouldn't have been aware if she'd been so close to me in age. Her Wikipedia says she's 44 but I reckon she's more like 46/47.

itsmylife7 · 24/06/2024 21:52

exactly say who they are.

If its the truth there's no comeback on you.

I couldn’t care less about any “comeback” from a Z-lister. However, if I say I went to school with Arabella Muffinface from Made in Chelsea or wherever and she was a bitch, all anyone who takes a dislike to me on MN has to do is Google her name and the word “school” and they’ll have a pretty good idea of where I went to school. Advance search my posts and you might find some other identifying information.

If you think that sounds paranoid, let me tell you, I’ve had more than one person trying to piece together information from my posts. I’d rather leave you hanging about details of celebs of years gone by than have that again, thank you.

Have to admit I was wondering that but I suspect not. I think its PR people saying "Oh you once lived near a flat roofed pub and your uncle was arrested at 18 for being drunk and disorderly? Excellent, lets tell everyone about how your overcame hard beginnings!"

Why is there this need to be seen to "overcome" things?! I dont have a TV anymore but when I did ex would watch all the X factor etc crap and everyone seems to have some sort of sob story. "OH this means so much to me as my grandmas next door neighbours dog lost a leg and it took so much to overcome that and get here...." I doubt that it has changed much. FFS even Mastermind needs a back story now! They've always had the potted bio's before the final but now there seems to be some sort of "This means so much to me because......" story in every one.
