Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

Also for all of those fools saying black kittens aren't pretty I very much beg to differ

Not photogenic, you say?
Might have to disagree with you there.

Our two house panthers are the sweetest, cuddliest, daftest, beasts you could ever hope to meet.

Black cats are lucky.

It's only the Yanks who think they are unlucky.

Your cat is the twin of my cat - same white patches! (and same tendency to get in bags/boxes whilst they're being used...)
I absolutely love black cats, don't understand why they can't be rehomed. They look so sleek and relaxed (comatose) when they're flopped out in the sun, beautiful little critters 😍

That's actually two cats, mother and son. Toto is the son, showing his wares in the garden. He has a tux, white armpits and tummy patch and will let anyone tickle him, like a dog really. The kids call him donkey.

He's twice the size of his mum Phoebe sitting in the bag. She's a tiny horror who will definitely fix you with her claws if you go hear her underneath (except me, she loves me). She has the most velvety fur I've ever felt. I would love to smoosh her but I'd be ded.

I don't understand it. My black cat is adorable and she doesn't obviously shed on my clothes unlike my tabby and white whose fur is EVERYWHERE.

My little girl cat makes the same pose but there will be fangs...

I love my black cat. My tiny black panther! He's absolutely gorgeous, he's my shadow. Follows me about everywhere.

Why wouldn't you want a tiny black panther in your house?

Don't understand people. We have 2 other black cats locally.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 15/06/2024 12:12

Our black cat is the softest, loveliest and friendliest cat I’ve ever come across. She’s so tolerant with kids and just a dream- loves cuddles. I couldn’t be without her.

Our rescue cat is black. She was four months old when we got her and the last of her litter to go as no one wanted a black cat. I'd always wanted one and still love black cats. She's nearly 13 now and a grumpy old madam but I love her. 😍 pic for no reason at all.

How very dare they! Ours is gorgeous. Even when sitting in a box of tacks.
He has green eyes but we met an orange eyed black cat the other day and my DCs are in love! ❤️❤️

I absolutely adore black cats, there's many amongst my family and close friends. Gorgeous little panthers.

Black cats are ace.
I had the most loving male black cat, called Duke and he was really loyal and thought he was a dog and he freaked my FIL out one day by meowing at me and my FIL was convinced Duke had called me "mum" - I miss him so much - he died in my arms the day before he would have been 18.
Now I have another male black cat called Blue and he is equally as beautiful and loving.
Love my little panther boys.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2024 13:30

Black is my favourite colour for a cat, my childhood cat was black and she was a darling.

We nearly got a black cat when my friend was fostering kittens, but she brought them over to see how my dog would take to kittens and he wanted to tear them limb from limb, so we didn't (obviously).

TheDefiant · 17/06/2024 12:53

Probably my favourite cat colour! 🐈‍⬛

idrinkandiknowthings · 17/06/2024 13:26

My DD and I adore black cats but I can't take on any more rescues as we already have two tuxedos.

ALongHardWinter · 17/06/2024 16:20

I think it is because they don't show up well in photos. I have a black cat, and to be honest, her colour never even crossed my mind when I rescued her as a 4 month old stray. But I have noticed that she doesn't show up very well in photos. Not that it bothers me,but I know that in this Facebook/Instagram age,so many shallow people are concerned with how their cat looks in a photo.

Here is an example.

A friend's cat unexpectedly had kittens so we figured the one black one would be hardest to home so we took him. Turns out a few people wanted him and she was having trouble homing the nearly all white cat; so we took her too!

Black cat was the runt and is the most affectionate cat I've ever had. I love his shiny face and he gives the best cuddles! Our white girl has captivated the neighbours with her daring acrobatics!!

I am going to adopt a rescue cat and I am happy to get a black cat and reading this thread has made me decision to get a little black cat. We lost our cat a few months ago and I miss him terribly but we can give a cat a nice home with lots and lots of love and affection they shall be totally spoilt

I used to have a black cat she was tiny looked about 6 months, had a cute pretty little face and tiny little paws. She was very very friendly always popping in to do her charity ‘keeping neighbours happy’ work to homes nearby. She had quite a fan club. I am not sure if she was a particular breed but I have meet other cats like her with the same personality. She was also a highly trained expert hunter who would kill birds a similar size to her (yes I did put a bell collar on her)
