Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

Maybe it's because they don't look as obviously 'pretty' in the same way as a tabby or tortoiseshell but the glossy, sleek coat of a black cat is beautiful. House panther is a very fitting term for them.

My family has only ever adopted black cats.
It began back in the 1960s when my parents were looking at kittens found with an unspayed female. A black male kitten climbed up my Dad & curled up in the hood of his coat & they were smitten!

For the past 30 years we've always adopted older cats, usually cats that need a quiet adult home with no other pets however we did take in a couple that had to be adopted together.

I often think it would be nice to have a couple of black kittens as you're starting with a blank slate. Many of the rescues we've adopted have had emotional problems.
My latest cat spent almost 6 months under the dining table with her food/water at one end & her litter tray at the other because she was so scared.
The wait was worth it - she's now 14 & incredibly loving although always on her terms.

Another black cat slave here. I’ve had two now, and make a beeline for them at rescues. Both have been such great cats, very soppy.

Until our recently acquired rescue cohort, I've had black cats all my life. Love a black cat.

Hard worked servant of a soppy tabby boy and a bossy but nervy almost all black girl - she has the most delicate tiny little white lace cravat. The black shows off the green of her eyes perfectly and it is hard to imagine any living creature more beautiful.

I don't know how much of the nerves are from being five years younger than him, how much from spending her first months in Covid lockdown so not seeing other humans, and how much from being black. She's very sweet and likes cuddles, but does not like strange people in the house.

The most disturbing effect of the nerves so far was the time she suddenly lost all the hair on the lower part of her undercarriage (I found it in a heap on the floor). A jet black cat with a white belly and inner thighs looks very odd. And I have no idea what upset her

I'm just here for the cat pics. Here's mine!

I don’t know. Foster fail Merry the menace, never a dull moment.

DD has a black cat and I have a black and white one. Both gorgeous. The black one can be a devil to find especially if she decides to go into a wardrobe! I have to admit we also had the most beautiful ginger boy. All were rescues.

I'm proud to say that I have never not had at least one black cat in my life for every day of the last 41 years - and sometimes up to 4 at the same time (plus the odd ginger)! I never had trouble telling them apart - same as if you had multiples of any other same colour - they have different shaped features, they come in different sizes, different colour eyes, make different sounds, different habits etc etc ...

When my current boy was still a kitten you could clearly see his hidden 'tabby' markings when he was in sunlight ... and really, hard to photograph or not, what a ridiculously shallow reason for dismissing that colour.

Yes .... hard to spot at night - there's been umpteen near misses and a few trips here and there (but whatever their colour cats tend to get under your feet) but a small price to pay IMO for their companionship and affection. All my black cats have been very friendly and sociable.

I have two black cats 5 years and 10 months.

Our kitten was £35 cheaper because he is all black ❤️❤️

PracticallyYesterday · 15/06/2024 10:26

I love black cats, I've had one since 1998 (not the same one, sadly).

PracticallyYesterday · 15/06/2024 10:29

@catsmother I have a picture just like the one in the bottom right of my boy, even down to the colour of the carpet - so spooky!

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 15/06/2024 10:34

We fostered kittens and their mums for many years and one of the jobs was taking photos for the charity's adoption website, so I've had to take a decent snap of loads of cats against the clock .

I can attest for the fact that it's much more difficult to take a good picture of a black cat, even a particularly gorgeous black cat, than a lighter colour one - features and bodies get lost in the mix.

FionnulaTheCooler · 15/06/2024 10:35

I'd love a black cat once the two I have now are no longer alive. Bonus points if he has yellow eyes.

Lemoncurd · 15/06/2024 10:36

I'd love a black cat, have been saying we should get a black one if we ever get another.

Not the one that keeps peeing up our front door or ringing the doorbell late at night/in the early hours to announce his 'gift' though!!

CatMumSlave · 15/06/2024 10:40

Would you class either of these as yellow!?

I have a resident ebony queen had her mother too. I was told by some family teens they don’t show up well on instragram 🤦‍♀️.

Our queen questioned their jealousy

Clicked on this thread for all the black cat photos, and haven't been disappointed! So many beauties. I love black cats.

EpicSoundtracks · 15/06/2024 10:52

Black cats are the best! I’m convinced my big needy baby is my soulmate. He’s the most affectionate creature on the planet, and he’s funny and polite 😻

I also have a long haired calico, and while she’s beautiful and photogenic, she’s more of a reluctant housemate 😁

We rescued a gorgeous black cat five years ago from a cats rescue centre. He had been reserved previously but the people didn't come and collect him as their daughter said he wouldn't look good on instagram ! I ask you. He's the most handsome boy ever.

VolvoFan · 15/06/2024 11:04

I think a lot of it is superstitious. I have two black and white rescues and before we got them, the home inspector's eyes lit up with joy when my DH told him I adore black cats. If I could give all black cats a place in my house, I would.

ChristmasJumpers · 15/06/2024 11:06

I would go for a black cat for our next, they are beautiful. The first black cat I had was literally my shadow and a real cuddle monster for his 19 years and now we have a black female cat who is antisocial, noisy and hates to cuddle. I love her 😂

lollipoprainbow · 15/06/2024 11:07

Here he is, pretty instagram ready I'd say !

The first one looks yellow to me, but not the second one.
