Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

Just posting again to add a comment that stuck with me... During a check up a while ago, the vet remarked that he loved black cats as they were usually always softies and gave him no trouble "I always go for black cats, every time". I said it was surely just a fluke/just the black cats he'd met, but apparently similar to "naughty torties" (vets usually assume they'll be feisty/troublesome), black cats have a reputation with vets for being affectionate.

We love black cats 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

I would lovevanither car. My black boy had to be PTS a few years ago with a cancerous mass on his kidney. He went downhill rapidly. I love him and miss him so much. I am looking for a black cat to adopt.
I'm based in South Worcestershire if anyone has a black cat/ kitten or knows of a rescue that has one. Ex VN so hopefully I'm considered to be a good owner.

ButlerForBlackCats reporting to this thread! Absolutely adore my house panthers. They are jet black from nose to tail tip but couldn't be more different in purrrsonality! There were some dodgy moments when we rented a place with black floors and black furrrniture but everybody made it through!

ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 15/06/2024 03:50

Black cats are often linked with the occult/ witches etc

But rescues often find the same with black dogs. Apparently, due to the fact that getting a photo or filming them can be more difficult. I have a solid black spaniel and on some photos you can't see her features well, if the lightening is bad. But the majority of the time, she photographs beautifully. She is stunning so I don't get. She does love the chair in the corner of our room that has a very dark blue blanket on. If we just have the TV on at night she does an amazing vanishing trick and seems to disappear into the chair. 😂

If my dogs were better with cats a black cat would definitely be on my list.

We have three black cats and one grey. Hadn't intended that the most recent pair would be black but that's what the rescue offered us (I think they saw us coming 🤣).
We can tell them apart (usually).
Note: the cat sporting a bird moustache was told off and the bird rescued.

All the black cats I've known have been extremely needy, noisy and I have one that is extremely yowly 18 hours of the day. It drives us nuts.

Oh bless him/her. Absolutely gorgeous

WickWood · 15/06/2024 06:10

Apparently, they aren't photogenic enough 🙄

This is Tiger, only his pet people can tell him apart from his brother but mostly by their mannerisms

I go to the rescue shelter and specifically ask for a black cat. Because they are the best cats ever !

FrenchFancie · 15/06/2024 06:44

This is Dobbie the house panther. We occasionally have ‘where’s the cat?’ Moments where he disguises himself as a jumper / t shirt / chair. He’s a rescue and we were told he was the last of his litter to be adopted.

Black cats are iconic! Our little girl's previous owner handed her in to a rescue with her kittens like she'd brought shame on the family or something. Fair enough to rehome the kittens but apparently they said just take her as well 😥. Their loss is our gain because she's very sweet and cuddly with fur which feels like velvet and we love her to pieces.

Mine was from a rescue and I had no idea people had a preference based on colour, I saw her on the website and she stood out for me, partly because she also only has one eye (couldn't be saved when she was found). She's the most affectionate little thing ever.

The rescue thought she was born around June time so we've chosen today as her (first) birthday Cake

Wouldn't be without her 🐾🩷

AnotherEmma · 15/06/2024 07:01

My black cat is absolutely beautiful - it is tricky to capture her beauty in photos (more so that my other cat who is ginger). She is also very affectionate and lovely.

ParadiseLaundry · 15/06/2024 07:02

We chose a female black cat from a large litter with lots of different colour cats as apparently statistically they're more intelligent and less likely to be involved in road accidents and less likely to have health problems.

The vet also confirmed this when we took her to be chipped and spayed.

PoppyFleur · 15/06/2024 07:04

We recently lost our beloved black cat suddenly at 5 years old to a clot. He was a rescue cat and had the most gorgeous nature, so loving, so mischievous, his absence has left a whole in our hearts. We were told by the rescue centre that it’s a combination of superstition for some people and lack of instagram appeal for others that black cats get overlooked.

From my experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to adopt another black cat. At the moment I’m just not sure I could bear the pain of another loss. He was such a big personality and presence, he was our son’s lockdown school buddy and my wfh companion, the house feels so quiet without him.

SkankingWombat · 15/06/2024 07:14

Weird - we rehomed a new infant overlord a year ago. There were a lot of black ones listed, but we kept missing out on them (and a number of others) despite applying as soon as they were listed and all the centres at the time being supposedly 'overrun' with kittens. With 2 DCs and a senior overlord in the family, personality and the ability to slot right in was our main priority, so I applied for any described as friendly, chilled and good with DCs and other cats. In the end, we were matched with an odd-looking B&W moggy (who is a perfect fit for the humans, but still a little too bouncy for The Boss. Hopefully another year and he will have chilled the fuck out a bit!). The fosterer who had raised DCat2's litter said that black cats were now rehomed quicker than all but tabbies here, attributing it to campaigns about nobody wanting them.

Algiz20 · 15/06/2024 07:21

Because they are sneaky little munchkins who wrap you round their paws and make you their eternally devoted cat slaves. They are also the cleverest cats I know (even cleverer than tuxedos and they are scary clever).

Historically there's a theory that a previous pope blamed black cats for the plague (think it was the plague) and the superstition has been there ever since. I'm pretty sure it was the same pope who also hated old women who lived alone and maybe only had a cat for company.

I think some shelters also struggle to re-home black and white cats for a similar reason. We currently have one mini panther and one older Tuxedo, and the therapy cat who brought me back from the brink when I was very ill a few years ago was black and white. If we lose either of them - God forbid - it would be another panther or tuxedo we'd probably look for.

When I was goin to get a kitten 2 years ago I immediately changed from a 'pretty one' to my gorgeous one
