Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

Tragically I’ve read that a significant part of the reason is that black cats (and dogs) aren’t very Instagrammable.

Like I say, he's harder to find in the house than, say, a white cat, but his bell and collar help with that.

I just went downstairs to get a drink (in the dark) and bent down to stroke DSs shoes 😂

I've had two black male cats, both incredibly soft, affectionate ones. Won't ever have anything else now!
This is my current boy so no idea why people say they're hard to photograph

I've had two black cats. Both the most loving and affectionate cats I've had. Got my current girl from a rescue six years ago - I didn't know black cats were less popular. She rolled over and showed me her belly as soon as I peeped in her enclosure so I knew she was mine. She's very happy on my lap right now.

SleepEatSnoozeRepeat · 15/06/2024 00:43

Black cats are beautiful! Dd would love one but dh is allergic so it’s not happening. She has a toy black cat named Void. The only reason she will leave home is to be able to have a black cat sanctuary.
I think we may have found her people 😁

EatCrow · 15/06/2024 00:44

Great photos, thanks for posting!

sixtyandsomething · 15/06/2024 00:45

nobody "hates" black cats! they just are hard to tell apart, hard to find in the dark and people worry they will be run over. I have had 3 , all different personalities, all lovely. But the reason I don't want another one now is one of those was my absolute puss soul mate, and would find having an animal that looked like her too upsetting, and also, I think I would always be thinking of the previous pet when I looked at the new one

So my next cat wont be black - because I have loved my previous black cat so much

buffyslayer · 15/06/2024 00:53

@TruthThatsHardAsSteel he says "me obviously. Now belly rubs please"

We have 2. One girl one boy both as soppy as can be.
I love a black cat, but then again, I AM quite witchy 😂
I think they photograph very well.

Truthfully, they are difficult to take quick snaps of without the flash on. So many of my cat photos are some variant of "black blob with eyes and ears"!

I've decided to treat this as a feature not a bug so I've leaned into it. I deliberately take pictures of her asleep on black rucksacks and post them to facebook entitled "find the cat in this picture"!

Ginkypig · 15/06/2024 01:05

My girl was the most beautiful girl in the world and had the sweetest calmest nature.
she was good as gold behaviour wise as well apart from a bit of scratching in areas she shouldn’t but got that sorted.

i was devastated when she went.

i have no clue why people don’t want black cats!

My cat isn't black but I wish he was! I tend to wear quite a lot of black and the hairs wouldn't show up as much as ginger!

CatamaranViper · 15/06/2024 01:15

When we decided we were ready for a cat, the colour was not a factor. We rescued a kitten because it needed a home. I genuinely couldn't imagine someone saying no based on their colour.

Oh for fucks sake now I'm looking at black cats at shelters near me. Husband said no cats but I say yes

Ginkypig · 15/06/2024 01:26

I wasn’t even looking to get a cat but my girl was the runt of a litter that (it sounds completely unbelievable but sad to say true) that the owner had threatened to drown so a family member and I managed to re home all of the litter except my girl so I took her.

turned out owner was pretty severely mentally ill but between our intervention with the animals and a period in hospital the owner didn’t have any issues or animals after that.

Bonjovispjs · 15/06/2024 02:00

I used to work in an animal shelter and those people on here saying it's because they're not photogenic are unfortunately right. They were always inundated with black cats who were often there for months because no one was interested, even though they were the sweetest cats in the world. I now foster cats from the same shelter and it's always the black ones that are with me the longest, it's so sad and so stupid.

Gettingbysomehow · 15/06/2024 02:07

I don't understand it. My black cat is adorable and she doesn't obviously shed on my clothes unlike my tabby and white whose fur is EVERYWHERE.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/06/2024 02:17

Genuinely don't understand!
I had 2 brothers, 1 black, 1 white. Black cat sadly died suddenly- I know we shouldn't have favourites, but he was such a great cat! He knew everyone and everyone knew him. People who choose animals on their colour are completely missing out on personality

Remaker · 15/06/2024 02:26

I have two rescues, white female, black male. They’re definitely harder to photograph but who cares about that!! And when the light is right you get this! Love my little panther, he’s so affectionate.

I got the sweetest little black kitten two years ago and very quickly decided I will never again in all my life be without a little sassy shadow.

She's the daftest most adorable creature on the whole planet and there is nothing that could possibly convince me otherwise.

I've had tabby cats and tuxedo cats before but I have a real soft spot for my mini black panther (even if she does very much run on orange cat software, she's definitely not the most intelligent cat I've ever lived with).

So when I outlive her I will be very quickly getting another black cat

Because they are pretty awesome

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 15/06/2024 02:34

I'm new to having cats, we brought home our new little kitten a few weeks ago and she is a delight. So sweet and affectionate, clever and mischievous, gentle and patient. She's taken care of me straight away and our two children adore her. Black cats are ace - and so photogenic and mysterious! (Also, bonus points for me with any feminist-witch connection.)

I used to volunteer at a cat sanctuary years ago, a surprising number of people are extremely superstitious about black cats and won't adopt them. Fortunately less so these days thanks to "the void" memes all over the internet but black cats are still often the most common in shelters.

MIL had 4 black cats at one point, it was adorable chaos.

Poppins2016 · 15/06/2024 03:03

We acquired my black cat because he was the last of his litter to find a home (probably due to colour) and friends of ours knew we might be partial to "just one more" cat... He is absolutely gorgeous and a complete softy. Very much a lap cat who thinks he might be part dog... he will come when called and has been nicknamed my shadow, because he's always near me.

My neighbour has two black cats and they're also gorgeous. A previous poster said that you can't tell black cats apart, but it's no different to having two tabby cats in the neighbourhood etc... I can tell my cat apart from my neighbours at a glance (even at considerable distance) because his body shape and facial features are different... I suppose I'd probably struggle to identify the difference if I wasn't his owner, but it's easy with familiarity.
