Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

I don’t know either but I’m interested to find out!

I’ve seen a few funnies on YouTube where black cats resemble clothing. 😄

LillyLeaf · 14/06/2024 23:52

I don't understand it either. Our rescue centre said the same. Our beautiful little tuxedo rescue cat was abandoned in a backpack and was in the rescue centre for 2 months, no one wanted her until I saw her. I love black cats although yes they are to find especially when you like darker interiors.

Lilyjfree · 14/06/2024 23:52

Unfortunately people don’t think black cats are as pretty as other cats. I’ve had people come into the rescue I volunteer at and straight out say they want a pretty cat and not a black one. Makes me so sad.
Also heard people say they are harder to photograph/film.

Personally I love the black panthers, I don’t give a hoot if they are harder to photograph, if they have the right personality and fit with your family, who cares what colour coat they have. Sadly many people don’t feel that way.

Like I say, he's harder to find in the house than, say, a white cat, but his bell and collar help with that.

All the black cats I've known have been extremely needy, noisy and I have one that is extremely yowly 18 hours of the day. It drives us nuts.

It's the same with black dogs. The colour makes seeing their facial features difficult. Other coloured cats/dogs look more appealing and so get rehomed quicker

Overtheatlantic · 14/06/2024 23:54

Black cats are the least likely to be rehomed for various reasons. If you can possibly make a home for an adult black female cat then you will have a friend for life. Black cats are awesome.

SummerSnowstorm · 14/06/2024 23:55

The only real difference is a colour preference. Black cats look sleek but plain. A tabby or tortoise shell might feel a bit more cheerful to look. Similar to how brighter coloured spaniels are often preferred.

I'm sure my pet owner blindness is part of this, but eh??!!
How aren't they beautiful? They look like mini panthers!

As a long term shelter volunteer I can attest to the fact that black cats are difficult to find homes for.

Why? Partly it's superstition. But people also feel they are a little bit boring....... not exciting enough.

Total bollocks, of course. Black cats rock. So mysterious......those eyes fixing on you, looking into your soul... Okay, that's bollocks too - they're just beautiful in their own way.

Do get a black cat!!! They are gorgeous 😻

AnnaMagnani · 14/06/2024 23:57

Have had three black cats and honestly would have stuck with black cats forever.

Unfortunately DH has glaucoma, can't see below his knees and black cats were proving a health hazard. So next cat was white.

But that is a v niche reason for not having black cats. All mine have been stunning looking as well, OK I'm a bit biased.

I grew up with collie dogs (border and bearded) so black/black and white dogs are the bees knees. Perhaps this skews my view but you can't judge a pets happiness by it's hair colour!

I always thought it stemmed from years
before photographing cats was a thing, and
it was because it was harder to see fleas on black cats, which led to people being stupidsticious about them.
I suppose people have their reasons. We can’t have cats as DS2 is allergic, but have had them in the past, including two oriental blacks. Love a black cat.

m00ngirl · 15/06/2024 00:11

I've volunteered at shelters including one of the biggest catteries in the UK and this is true, and because people don't think black cats are as pretty/photogenic.

Which is crazy to me as it's so shallow and anyway they are THE MOST beautiful in my book. I remember so many of the characters I had the pleasure of looking after.

I'd have a whole army of black cats if I could 🐈‍⬛

buffyslayer · 15/06/2024 00:16

I've had two black male cats, both incredibly soft, affectionate ones. Won't ever have anything else now!
This is my current boy so no idea why people say they're hard to photograph

I genuinely can't get my head around this. They are stunning!
I think all cats look beautiful, but black cats are definitely my weakness. Who owns a cat just to take photos of them?

I have never had a black cat but I think they are beautiful! They look so sleek and smart. Grin

I googled this just, and the reasons behind people not adopting them so much are...

  1. They (allegedly) don't look as good on photos as they blend into the background too much!

  2. People think they are witchy and sinister and associated with the occult!

  3. People think they will bring bad luck!

Poor kitties. Sad

How cute! 😍

And yeah, they look as good on photographs as any other cat! I googled 'black cats' a few minutes ago, and loads of photos of black cats came up, and they were all lovely!

GenghisCalm · 15/06/2024 00:25

I love a black cat, we have two at the moment one is short haired and the other is long haired and the are my two beautiful girls. Both came from friends who had cats that had "surprise" litters and both of them were the only pure black cats and also the last one left.

I think I will always have black cats.

buffyslayer · 15/06/2024 00:26

I mean I do spend a lot of time talking to crumpled up black t shirts and accidentally launching cat into the laundry bin but... Grin
Only downside
He always appears like "that is t shirt. I am cat"

When a family member was rehoming kittens, she had so many people contact her to ask what colour the kittens were and most of them lost interest when they heard that all the kittens were black. So I can completely believe that cat rescues are full of black cats unfortunately.

The vet that I see always says black cats are his favourite because they're so friendly compared to other colours. I have no idea if this is true but it makes me laugh every time he says it.

Anyway, I love a black cat and mine is absolutely gorgeous.

Always worry about them getting run over at night.
Can't tell one from another.
Just don't get excited about a black cat - much prefer a ginger or a tabby

Pascha · 15/06/2024 00:34

I don't get it. I don't think black cats are hard to film at all!
