Black cats

So our local shelters keep putting out pleas for people to consider black cats as they are overrun with them.

Why? I mean I know about the superstitious element but surely that's not the reason?

I have a black cat and he was a rescue. His colour never crossed my mind. I mean he's harder to find in the house I suppose but that's hardly enough reason.

Black cats are no more dangerous or wild than any other colour so why are they so hated? Is it all superstitious reasons?

I have a black, female rescue. I got her at 6 years old and she is genuinely the most loving, easy, chilled, sweet cat I've ever had ❤️. Love her to bits. Please consider a black rescue you'll have a friend for life 🐈‍⬛️

Obviously not a valid reason not to get a black cat but in my experience they are indeed very hard to photograph! We always say our black cat is too black to photograph, he always looks like a black blob 😂

I love black cats!! They are so sleek (we have two and they are so beautiful.

Your cat is the twin of my cat - same white patches! (and same tendency to get in bags/boxes whilst they're being used...)
I absolutely love black cats, don't understand why they can't be rehomed. They look so sleek and relaxed (comatose) when they're flopped out in the sun, beautiful little critters 😍

I have a black cat and he’s a royal pain in the arse. However - he is my baby and he’s so loved. We have 3 cats of various colours. All of which, are a pain in the arse. I’d love to rescue more but I have 2 children and it’s not possible.

Basil definitely isn't hard to photograph. 😁

I've had a lot of cats over the years but my black cat has been my absolute favourite. He is so chirpy and vocal and completely daft. He's affectionate and a proper little pal. The only downside is the fact you can't see him in the dark. I've nearly fallen over him on the stairs many times!!

I'm not actually a fan of cats because of the damage they do to wildlife. Not the cats fault but everyone on my estate owns at least two and it's decimated the bird population.

However black cats to my mind look the coolest.

I have a mini panther with a white bikini. He's the softest, jolliest cat I've ever had. He was a rescue too.

this is my black cat 🐈‍⬛ she was dumped in a box outside a vets very pregnant with 5 kittens. She spent 7 months looking for a home in a shelter.
This was 17 years ago, she just had her 19th birthday and is the most loyal, loving cat. She is still healthy so I’m hopeful she has some years in her yet.

if I ever have another cat in my life it will only be a black one.

It seems to be that people mistakenly believe that black cats are bad luck which is bullshit. They are well known for their friendly and affectionate nature. I love black cats and I would have more if I could but I'm only allowed one 😁

Got a petite black panther called Velvet. Think she's stunning. She's an excellent catcher of rats (live in countryside and needed her to be). She's not massively friendly, though better than she was. Got her at about 6m from woman who had used her to have a litter, poor thing.

This cartoon sums up my two cats - the black cat is the one on the left, she's round and cuddly and tbh not especially bright, and we have a tabby boy who is long, angular, very vocal and too clever for his own good!

There are far more superstitious people than you think, so many new builds don't even have a number 13! It's nuts

I'm just here for the cute / malevolent cat pictures. Who on earth thinks they don't photo well? I do think it hoes back long before instagram though. I remember as a kid being told that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck.

Out of all the cats I’ve had in my life, my black one was one of the most loving and chilled things which is what they are known for. I currently have a white cat and they are also quite unpopular due to the misconception that they are all blind! Makes me sad that people are so picky because of silly reasons.

Its because of two reasons, superstition, but these days more because a black cat is not so photogenic and therefore not so instagrammable.

Sad.

When I have another cat it will be old or black or ugly or all 3. Just because I don't have a pet for looks but to give another living thing a better life.

I don't understand choosing a cat based in how they photograph. How much time to people spend taking pictures of their cats? Surely their personality is more important.

I have 2 black cats from rescue. They are the most beautiful boys. Cannot understand why anyone would discriminate against them.

I do think it's the superstitious thing and also people not thinking they are are "cute" or as nice looking as other cats I have a black cat and she's the best cat I've had and I've had quite a few!
