What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

Littleststone · 10/06/2024 08:10

i was 14 in the 80s and can’t remember either!

TheFunHasGone · 10/06/2024 08:10

Probably DMs

Nitw1t · 10/06/2024 08:10

Four weddings and a funeral on VHS 🤣

Waitingfordoggo · 10/06/2024 08:10

I turned 14 in 1991 and have no idea what I got for my birthday. Thinking back to what I was into at the time, it might have been clothes but certainly not designer. Or possibly a pair of inexpensive earrings.

Octavia64 · 10/06/2024 08:11

Books. Computer games (for PC). Music on tape.

Waitingfordoggo · 10/06/2024 08:11

Oooh, or a CD. I’d forgotten about those 😂

Nitw1t · 10/06/2024 08:11

And clothes from river island. Probably a bodysuit with a massive floral corduroy shirt to wear over it.

DappledThings · 10/06/2024 08:12

Maybe a Blur t-shirt. And a book about the X Files. But I already hated my birthday by that age and had tried to cancel it.

Clothes and CDs were definitely the order of the day though.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 10/06/2024 08:12

Late 80s - I would guess clothes, books, jewellery & chocolate.

Needmorelego · 10/06/2024 08:12

Probably some Judy Blume books and a music album (on tape).
I might have a look at my old diaries later and see if I wrote it down 🙂

seensome · 10/06/2024 08:12

A perm, hair tongs, clothes, money

Fucketbucket · 10/06/2024 08:13

Clothes most likely, perfume maybe

OliveK · 10/06/2024 08:13

Not sure about birthday but I know a BIG Xmas present around that age was a little silver stereo system for my room
Double cassette, radio, record player on top. Probably about 1990. Heaven!!

Mamette · 10/06/2024 08:14

I got a Walkman in the shape of a wedge. It was red and had a shoulder strap 😂

KitKatChunki · 10/06/2024 08:14

I got a Sega Master system with built in Alex Kid in Miracle World.

AgathaMystery · 10/06/2024 08:14

1994 I got… a little TV for my bedroom with built in VHS. DM (Matt black 8 hole by Red or Ded). Jeans from the Gap, jelly glitter bracelets, a dress from the pre-IRA Corn Exchange, some candles, money and henna hair dye that I never dared use.

Singleandproud · 10/06/2024 08:15

I was 10 in 96 and got a Game Boy.
I had a much older brother and I think he had a lot of Star Wars, Transformers collectibles and Lego stuff but I can't remember anything else. Possibly he got a SNES on the earlier 90s.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/06/2024 08:15

I was 14 in 1992. I got some navy chinos with red paisley turn ups and an oversize white cotton shirt with a matching red paisley patch packet from the Co -op department store. I loved that outfit.

Berlinlover · 10/06/2024 08:15

I turned 14 in 1990 and would have got money for my birthday.

SuePreemly · 10/06/2024 08:15

New Walkman bought with birthday money and a new copy of the album (on tape) I listened to so much that I actually stretched the tape.

I remember lusting after a CD player for my room but it being too expensive. And I had no CDs 🤣🤣🤣

Littletreefrog · 10/06/2024 08:17

Probably rediculously wide jeans, a Tammy Girl voucher and some smellies from Body Shop.

BestZebbie · 10/06/2024 08:17

Star Trek items and maybe X-Files books from Forbidden Planet (Star Trek being my special interest at that moment). Rotastak for my hamster. Chocolate. Maybe small stationery/Body Shop bath pearls from friends. I may have got a New Look voucher from relatives as New Look was the only clothes shop for people under 20 in our town.

I recall that I was quite interested in the concept of make-up, but I wasn't allowed to have it (in case I managed to get a boyfriend and forgot about studying), with the exception of a black pyramid all-in-one set from Argos and a billion rainbow nail polishes.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/06/2024 08:18

Mum handed me Kay's and Freeman's catalogues, gave me a budget and told me to go crazy Grin

Granted we were an army family living abroad so fashions were a tad behind so this gift was a Big Deal

Oh and dad took me to the NAAFI shop on base on my actual birthday (his is the same day) and treated me to heaps of CDs and then a fry up after

Those were the days

PricklyPearNoThornsPlease · 10/06/2024 08:19

Vouchers and / or money, which I probably spent in Tammy Girl!

Or really random things for my hobby.

hennybeans · 10/06/2024 08:22

‘93: I got 4 pairs of differently coloured Converse hi tops. Red, purple, turquoise, and i I can’t remember the fourth.
