If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

I think I got a Body Shop basket and pyjamas from La Senza (I felt so fancy buying from there because they put purchases in a box with tissue paper and tiny scented plastic beads!) a sweater from the Sweater Shop and a pair of Nike Huaraches.

I used to get given Sweater Shop jumpers and tops from my step mum at Christmas.

We all (younger half brother and sisters) used to go up to Covent Garden and I’d buy clothes in Ton Sur Ton.

SaltBlossom · 10/06/2024 09:55

Red dwarf video, a sega game, books, probably some pony related things.

MissBridgetJones · 10/06/2024 09:57

Money/vouchers to spend in Bay Trading Co, Miss Selfridge or Topshop. CD's, some perfume, probably Amaridge by Givenchy, or Charlie Red, exclamation or Tribe!!! Earth Star lipstick, Rimmel face powder.

Ozgirl75 · 10/06/2024 10:00

I was 14 in the early 90s and I can’t recall what I got, but it might have been a couple of albums on tape, maybe that shawl from Laura Ashley, probably some books and maybe a shopping trip to Jigsaw or Bennetton.

Ozgirl75 · 10/06/2024 10:01

Actually I even do remember one of my main presents for Christmas when I was 14 - it was this amazing dress from Karen Millen - I felt like a million dollars in it and kept it for years!

Butterworths · 10/06/2024 10:02

Hmm I turned 14 in 1994 and really can't recall! One year i wanted a push up bra and my mum said no - that might have been then!

Oh that may have been the year I got rouge noir Chanel nail varnish! I was so happy with it.

Ozgirl75 · 10/06/2024 10:04

I got Hard Candy nail varnish one year around then - my mum took me to Harrods to choose it, I remember it so clearly as it had that cool bottle. I got a necklace as well that was a massive daisy that I just LOVED.

WotNoUserName · 10/06/2024 10:08

I was 14 in 1990. I can't remember what I got, but it probably involved music as I was listened to music or the radio all the time. So probably a Walkman and some cassettes. I was never into fashion, so don't remember being bought clothes for my birthday. Might have got books too, as I've always loved reading.

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 10/06/2024 10:10

I was 14 in 1994 and I remember getting a satin slip/nightie from Knickerbox - I wore it as a dress with DMs!
A new walkman that had a rewind button (I was so happy because my previous one only had FF so if I wanted to rewind a song I had to turn the tape over and fast forward 😂
I would have got tapes, stuff from The Body Shop and Boots Natural Collection/17 and I remember getting a set of mini perfumes from my friend that were Charlie, Charlie Red, Exclamation etc.

Aww I can picture myself with all of these things in my peach and turquoise bedroom covered in posters from Just Seventeen and Mizz. ❤

Twotooto · 10/06/2024 10:15

Not sure about birthday presents but I definitely got a CD/ Tape deck boom box type thing one Christmas along with The Happy Mondays - Pills, Thrills & Bellyaches as my first CD in either 1990 or 1991 - so 14 or 15.

katebushh · 10/06/2024 10:18

I was 14 in 1992 and all I can recall is pony stuff! I probably would have wanted body shop stuff and eyeliners tbh.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 10/06/2024 10:20

Some body shop dewberry stuff, a cloth bag white with black skulls from fresh garbage in Belfast, some Waterstones vouchers and stationery

BouleDeSuif · 10/06/2024 10:21

I had a look in my diary-

Vanilla body spray
Trip to The Body Shop with my grandma followed by lunch in the Co-op canteen (sausages, chips, peas, lemon meringue)
Lots of paper for writing
Big bar of Dairy Milk (the massive bars in cardboard that you used to get, when it was still delicious)

I would still be very happy with that tbh.

TheDefiant · 10/06/2024 10:30

Probably a Star Trek collectors plate. Or something related to Star Trek.

TheDefiant · 10/06/2024 10:31

BestZebbie · 10/06/2024 08:17

Star Trek items and maybe X-Files books from Forbidden Planet (Star Trek being my special interest at that moment). Rotastak for my hamster. Chocolate. Maybe small stationery/Body Shop bath pearls from friends. I may have got a New Look voucher from relatives as New Look was the only clothes shop for people under 20 in our town.

I recall that I was quite interested in the concept of make-up, but I wasn't allowed to have it (in case I managed to get a boyfriend and forgot about studying), with the exception of a black pyramid all-in-one set from Argos and a billion rainbow nail polishes.

Edited

I really did not expect another Star Trek fan to be on this thread! 🖖 LLAP

Are you sure if was Jigsaw? That was for teenagers when I was younger. Too expensive!

heartbrokenof · 10/06/2024 10:38

2004 for me and I got clothes and cds

Ozgirl75 · 10/06/2024 10:39

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain it was my parents’ way of getting me to wear something other than jeans, and a band t shirt over a long sleeved top, with a massive, slightly torn cardigan on top.

CherryBombe · 10/06/2024 10:39

I think I had an adidas tracksuit

CherryBombe · 10/06/2024 10:40

Or a mini system for my room

blackheartsgirl · 10/06/2024 10:42

I got a Sony Walkman for my main present when I turned 14 in 1991. Actually I think that was the only thing I got. I absolutely loved it, had it for years

LittleTalkingMan · 10/06/2024 10:42

I was 14 in 1992 and remember very clearly having a CD player that was a small boombox style. 5 single CDs.

I also remember having some money so I spent it in Boots on 17 make concealer and rimmel heather shimmer

MummyJ12 · 10/06/2024 10:42

I agree! I was well in my 30s before even stepping foot into a Jigsaw!
Loved Benetton though. (The duffle bags and jumpers are iconic!)

LardyandMardy · 10/06/2024 10:42

The VHS comment has just reminded me I got an X files VHS tape for either my 13th or 14th birthday and for the other I got a Stirling silver bracelet which I still have and will pass on to my daughter.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/06/2024 10:44

Then when I was at college I had some bits from La Redoute which the absolute height of sophistication.

OMG yes I remember doing this too. Also a couple of French cosmetic companies I used to order from ... think one had a man's name and maybe Agnes B too? Often came with the most random Gift Witt Purchase. Oh and you had to fill in those credit card payment slip things Grin
