If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

1998 if that counts, I always got a gift certificate for my favourite music store to buy CDs around that time. Was also taken to urban outfitters for clothes which has come back around somehow!

I did get DMs that year but for back to school. No DVDs, I think I always got them from the library or watched our VHS collection.

I did get skincare (always Clinique, no experimenting with brands like people do now) but only at Christmas or August when they did their gift with purchase. I would buy my own makeup, cheap drugstore brands.

I've just glanced at the singles and album charts for the year I turned 14 and that triggered some memories for me. I can't be certain but it's highly likely there was a bottle of white musk from the body shop, some cds quite likely Bon Jovi and Nirvana (eclectic tastes), some Docs and something made of crushed velvet (I recall a lovely green dress a big floppy hat), probably some dangle earrings too. Knowing my dm there would have been pj's and slippers.

I do remember that for my 16th birthday my friends chipped in to buy me a bottle of Archers peach schnapps.

@FrancisSeaton yes! That's the one! Actually came to me today (my subconscious must have been trying to remember after this thread Grin).

It was so exciting getting the parcels.

My DSs were that age and they did want expensive items. A new games system was around £200 which would be the main joint present for Xmas. Games were around £30 to £40. They also had a stereo and a TV for their room.
They also had cheaper items such as CDs and DVDs. My younger DS started wanting £100 trainers around that age, though I refused to buy them.
Girls only wanted cheaper items, mainly clothes.

Toooldtopretend · 12/06/2024 12:54

I definitely got a Pop Swatch at around that type of age & time.

Emmz1510 · 12/06/2024 12:59

I’m really struggling to remember!
Jewellery maybe, or clothes. Possibly a cassette tape album- this was before CD’s really took off and I think I was into Take That at that time so possibly one of their albums.

Comedycook · 12/06/2024 13:08

I used to like some forever friends merchandise!

Liliesrus · 12/06/2024 13:55

1984- think that was the year I got a sheepskin jacket

Haribosweets · 12/06/2024 14:39

I got trolls for my 14th! As in the little doll with random coloured spikey hair. Back in 1993

Manthide · 12/06/2024 14:58

I was 14 in the 70s and I probably got clothes. My youngest is 16 and got a new much better (second hand) mobile phone when she was 14.

Hernameisdeborah · 12/06/2024 15:25

I turned 14 in 1991, and got a Global Hypercolor t-shirt (which went from mauve to pink in the heat) and a Koosh ball.

kurotora · 12/06/2024 16:02

Late 90s! A couple of CDs and a video tape. Pretty sure it was a lot of CDs, videos, books, maybe a band shirt, for teenage birthday/Christmas. A couple of plush animals too.

Jiski · 12/06/2024 16:45

I remember getting a camera and my brother would have had trainers or a computer console.

Julimia · 12/06/2024 17:14

And your point is???

Mimimimi1234 · 12/06/2024 17:33

I was 14 in mid 90s, I think I asked for Lee Jean shirt from Mad house, Naff Naff jumper. Bennetton stretch jeans in baby pink, Benneton jumper, Moschino Cheap and Chic perfume, Versace Blue Jeans Perfume, Sony walkman, Damage and Boys 2 Men album, a World Dance record bag, and Technics 1210s. I definitely had these items but not sure if I got them for my 14 or 15th birthday or christmas or what :)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/06/2024 17:38

Music, Body Shop toiletries (when they were still good), t-shirts, books, jewellery, craft kits

FussyPud · 12/06/2024 17:40

Probably book tokens, I was ridiculously easy to buy for. 😄

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 12/06/2024 17:48

I just used to get a card with £10 in it and usually a cake for the evening.

PurpleChrayn · 12/06/2024 19:16

I turned 14 in 1993 and the best present I got was a toy that consisted of a magnetic base and loads of silver metal stars that you could build up into patterns. Also books, and possibly a tamagotchi but that may have been earlier or later.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 13/06/2024 07:29

Books, cassettes, hair dryer, calligraphy pens, golfing umbrella, a care bear

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 13/06/2024 15:31

A double cassette Hifi with speakers so I could record the top 40 off the radio and copy cassettes

Ablar · 14/06/2024 10:20

I was 14 in 99 and I think I had a cd player and cd's or it was a tv with a dvd built in

I loved it me and my mum would order a big box full

ColdWaterDipper · 14/06/2024 22:07

I was 14 in the mid 90s and would have had something for my ponies (new reins or brushes etc), and a few cds I expect. I wasn’t interested in clothes or make up, and spent my whole time swimming or riding I think. I remember one year receiving a pair of new skis for my birthday (in august!), and being very pleased with them 😂 my eldest will be 13 in august and to be fair he hasn’t really asked for anything particularly expensive - he wants things like Lego, a new football, a bigger cricket bat, some books, a penknife, fancy race goggles, and a sticky pad thing for his surf board. He isn’t into clothes or tech yet, which is great.

Mimimimi1234 · 17/06/2024 00:06

Reading these posts I can literally smell the CK1 and Impulse radiating through the screen... Anyone feel like going to Wimpy?
