If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

Hair crimpers!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 10/06/2024 08:44

I had the computer cd game of Worms and Theme Hospital. Plus CDs of nirvana, Roxette, Peter André
I remember getting a denim skirt with buttons down the front and a black velvet peak slouch cap. My parents told me i was too Young for canvas knee highs or a black mini dress. Maybe 1992?
Dad told me bootleg trousers from tammy girl for £35 were too expensive 😂

DogwoodTree · 10/06/2024 08:44

Walkman
albums on tape
clothes (jeans and t-shirts probably from Tammy Girl)
books about TV programmes (I seem to remember there being absolutely loads of them around, glossy books with lots of behind the scenes pics, facts about the actors, interviews etc)
hair tools - this was the days before GHDs and I remember always being obsessed with the next gadget that might finally tame my hair. I remember having ones which used little gas cylinders to heat up!
natural collection make up
body shop toiletries
colourful socks (topshop?)

ahhh I feel so nostalgic now!

Needmorelego · 10/06/2024 08:46

@Notamum12345577 probably not "Forever" as that wasn't one of my favourites.
More likely"Just As Long As We're Together" as that was a fairly new release when I was 14.

Okayornot · 10/06/2024 08:46

I was 14 in the late 80s. I think it was all bath pearls from the Body Shop and money so I could buy clothes. I also might have got the odd album.

UnimaginableWindBird · 10/06/2024 08:46

Books, clothes, CDs (or a CD player), Gameboy games, perfume, earrings, stuff to decorate my room, model cats, stuff from the Body Shop, Thornton's vanilla truffles.

Oh, I remember an actual present - my dad gave me a pair of DM boots, and I was really upset because I thought he was trying to turn me into a cool teenager, but I wanted to stay a geeky little kid for longer. I loved those boots later on, though.

FrancisSeaton · 10/06/2024 08:48

Tribe
Exclamation
Fuzzy peach from the body shop

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 10/06/2024 08:48

I got a necklace for my 14th. Maybe some clothes too. Possibly earrings, I was into them. Maybe books? Cash from granny. Photo frames were always a typical friend present back then, as were CD singles but we didn't have a CD player. A VHS of a movie you liked was another common one. I remember my godmother got my perfume, either 14 or 15 and that was cool and I had used samples from my Mum before that.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 10/06/2024 08:50

Birthday/Christmas presents from around then:
Cd player
CDs
L'eau D'Issey perfume
Kickers
FIMO modelling clay
a Pop Swatch
Body Shop stuff

Not all for the one birthday though!

WolfFoxHare · 10/06/2024 08:51

Books, mainly.

Brexile · 10/06/2024 08:52

Book tokens. Expensive trainers were definitely a thing though, because I was bullied for not having them.

Wrapunzel · 10/06/2024 08:53

I got a pony! I'd wanted one for nine years and my parents saved up and got me one for my 14th birthday in 1993, once I could look after him pretty independently (they're not horsey)

Ohfuckrucksack · 10/06/2024 08:55

I'm of that era and think what my children ask for now is similar to what I would have asked for then.

Clothes, skin care/make up and tech - expensive football shirts were a big thing then and now.

The tech may have changed - CDs/videos/stereos to Iphones but I think teenagers/young people value their image and technology (being connected to others) across all eras

tweedbankline · 10/06/2024 08:56

I would guess clothes and records / cds perhaps - this was before streaming

FriedAir · 10/06/2024 08:56

I remember my friend got one of those flowers in a pot that danced in time to the music.

StuntNun · 10/06/2024 08:56

Almost certainly music cassettes, blank video cassettes, books, book tokens, and a £5 note in a card from my grandparents.

Needmorelego · 10/06/2024 08:57

My teenage diaries sit in a box on top of my wardrobe so I just had a look.
14th Birthday all I had written was how me and my best mate stayed awake until midnight, ate crisps and had a slurping competition.
I'm guessing the presents weren't that exciting that year 😂

lifehappens12 · 10/06/2024 08:57

Would have been a cd player, cds or clothes

RoseZinfandel · 10/06/2024 08:58

I remember getting a mountain bike for my 14th birthday.
I can’t remember other birthday presents in my teen years, but a new bike was a really big deal.

Winederlust · 10/06/2024 08:59

14 in 1993. I can't remember the exact year but definitely early/mid 90s I got a skalextric (was mad into F1 at the time!).

museumum · 10/06/2024 08:59

Maybe a “hi-fi” for my room. Perfume, music or clothes.

Echobelly · 10/06/2024 09:00

I think Body Shop toiletries, earrings and clothes from Tammy Girl. Turned fourteen in 1991

museumum · 10/06/2024 09:00

might have been Benetton jumper year 🤣

MermaidEyes · 10/06/2024 09:00

I was 14 in 1989. I had a pink ghetto blaster and the Technotronic cassette 😆

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/06/2024 09:03

This is a very happy thread OP - thanks Grin
