What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

OP posts:
EmmaOvary · 10/06/2024 09:04

Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill on CD

FriedAir · 10/06/2024 09:04

Ooo I also remember getting a diary with a lock.

Stationary was more of a thing then too. Forever friends letter writing sets and pencil tins.

NCfor24 · 10/06/2024 09:07

Books and CDs I think
Around 13/14 I bought myself a 2nd hand Sega Master System from the Bargain Pages and dad drove me miles to collect it...it was £60. I may have had a game for my birthday. Games were pricey though, as they are now, so probably one new one a year!

andallyourevergonnabeismean · 10/06/2024 09:11

I was 14 in early nineties but can't remember.

I got a sega master system around 12.
Definitely a tamagotchi
I remember asking for a shellsuit one year.

But probably jewelry, makeup clothes.

I didn't get anything like what mine got as we didn't have much money

Bjorkdidit · 10/06/2024 09:15

Not me, but younger siblings and cousins, nearest equivalents were probably:

Kickers
Top Shop vouchers
Polaroid camera
CD/tape/records and players
Body shop stuff

Dmsandfloatydress · 10/06/2024 09:15

Converse one stars and patchwork trousers? At a guess? Or some DMs. 14 in 1992

StarkMalark · 10/06/2024 09:16

I was 14 in 1995 and I think I got a very cheap cd player (with a tape deck and radio!) that was on special offer in Asda. Plus some CDs, one which was definitely Dummy by Portishead. That Christmas I definitely got more CDs, one of which was Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill. Which I listened to on repeat feeling like it spoke of the entire sum of my romantic experience to date (hahaha!) Agree with the other posters about getting clothes for Christmas and birthdays, even just stuff like pants or socks. I remember my Mum would ring up to order things from the Next catalogue and it would take weeks to come. Then when I was at college I had some bits from La Redoute which the absolute height of sophistication.

MabelMaybe · 10/06/2024 09:20

My sister got the Madonna Ultimate Collection CD for Christmas about that age. They'd sent a duff batch to the UK so mum had to take it back to the shop and get a replacement in the new year.

Chillilounger · 10/06/2024 09:25

Portable cd player!

NavyKoala · 10/06/2024 09:32

Doc Marten boots for my fifteenth birthday definitely. My dad laughed at one of my nieces getting the same thing for her fifteenth. I think patchwork trousers for my fourteenth and one of those Indian silver rope necklaces for my sixteenth. Those were my big presents from parents. Other than that, I think books, maybe a CD, maybe something from the Body Shop?

Relaxd · 10/06/2024 09:34

Now CD, money towards Nintendo

Iamtarticus · 10/06/2024 09:36

I got something like this. I bloody loved it

I had my 15th birthday in 1994 and I remember my parents giving me a Take That cassette and a £20 note, I was also given a record bag from Shelley's (the shoe shop) which was Navy with gold writing, from my grandparents.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 10/06/2024 09:40

1994 I turned 14 and I got £50 (I think) go shopping - I remember buying dungarees from Tammy girl and some bits from body shop!

Johaanah · 10/06/2024 09:40

Actually I also remember my aunt giving me LouLou perfume in the turquoise bottle, and another family member buying me bath pearls animal shaped soaps and satsuma shower gel from the body shop, but that could have been anywhere between the ages of 13-15.

BeachRide · 10/06/2024 09:41

The soundtrack to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on cassette. Was delighted 😀

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 10/06/2024 09:43

14 in 1991. All my trainers were Nike. Fairly sure thats the year I got a massive tool box to keep my make up in and extra makeup/Calvin Klein perfume etc. Certainly I had make up and my mum had introduced me to the concept of cleansing and moisturing from 10ish. It's definitely the year I got my first DMs (purple).

Ariela · 10/06/2024 09:45

Money for clothes. I bought a cheesecloth shirt, green, in Tammy Girl which faded to a very very pale green. It was short and had ties round the waist. I also bought a length of light weight denim and made a pair of high waisted flares. I thought I was the bees knees.

LillyLeaf · 10/06/2024 09:46

Probably gig tickets, a cd, a poster or books. Maybe something for hair, new hairdryer or crimpers. Maybe some money for clothes. I can't remember what I got at 14 buy something like these. (Not all of the above at once).

mindutopia · 10/06/2024 09:47

At that age, I'm pretty sure I mostly just got cash in a card. And a birthday meal out.

There absolutely were kids in my school though who got fancy stuff - make up, expensive shoes, clothes - and there are obviously absolutely plenty of kids today who don't get these things for their birthdays. Mine got a pair of walking poles for her birthday this year.

MummyJ12 · 10/06/2024 09:47

I think I got a Body Shop basket and pyjamas from La Senza (I felt so fancy buying from there because they put purchases in a box with tissue paper and tiny scented plastic beads!) a sweater from the Sweater Shop and a pair of Nike Huaraches.

SockQueen · 10/06/2024 09:48

I was 14 in 1998. I'm pretty sure I got Boyzone tour tickets, I was pathetically obsessed. And perhaps a delightful crushed velvet crop top or similar.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/06/2024 09:50

My younger half sister was 14 in the early 90s. I got her Body Shop products and gave her money and gift vouchers, though if she asked for something clothes wise I’d get it for her.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/06/2024 09:52

Money for clothes, maybe£20 if I was lucky. I connected myth and magic dragons so one of those probably

Moveoverdarlin · 10/06/2024 09:52

I turned 14 in 1994. I got Now 27 on CD (The sign by Ace of Bass was the first track). I got a nice navy denim jacket from New Look. I got Body Shop bits, smellies from Woolworths.

But the Now albums were a big thing for me. A new one would always come out around by birthday. I also remember getting a necklace which was a black rope and a big blue stone thing. It was a choker style. Very 90s.
