If you turned 14 in the early '90s

What did you get for your birthday presents?

I genuinely can't remember and my soon to be 14 y.o asked me the question.

It blows my mind what 14 year olds ask for nowadays that just were not part of my world back then, I had no interest in make up, skin care, expensive trainers, tech etc.

Body Shop stuff, make-up, endless CDs, trainers (Nike Air Max or Reebok Classics), Hoodies from Stussy etc, jumpers and bags from Benetton or Sweater Shop, Discman, perfume.

Comparable to the stuff I'd by for my own teenagers now (but just the modern day versions!)

D20 · 10/06/2024 10:45

Certainly not all at once but things I can remember getting early 90s were: Body Shop Banana shampoo, shell suit, Reebok Pump trainers, Swatch Watch, Benneton bag, Head bag, massive mechanical alarm clock, hi-fi, Stephen King book, bath pearls. Always used to go out for a family meal or get a takeaway too but they were strictly limited to birthdays.

PercyPigSocks · 10/06/2024 10:46

I was finally allowed to get my ears pierced when I turned 14 in 1991. I presume I got other gifts too but don’t remember anything other than the ears!

I had a look in my diary-

Vanilla body spray
Trip to The Body Shop with my grandma followed by lunch in the Co-op canteen (sausages, chips, peas, lemon meringue)
Lots of paper for writing
Big bar of Dairy Milk (the massive bars in cardboard that you used to get, when it was still delicious)

I would still be very happy with that tbh.

To be fair I'd bloody love that now too Grin

Some shorts from Dorothy Perkins. They were the voluminous knee length ones that were fashionable at the time.

TheMessThatYouLeftWhenYouWentAway · 10/06/2024 10:50

A Q magazine subscription as my main present.

Otherwise, all my teenage birthdays in the 90s were focused around CDs. My fourteenth I remember clearly as being the year of Definitely Maybe, among others.

Aside from music, I also would have received Body Shop sets and Dewberry perfume.

From friends, I would have received candles and incense sticks.

Then when I was at college I had some bits from La Redoute which the absolute height of sophistication.

OMG yes I remember doing this too. Also a couple of French cosmetic companies I used to order from ... think one had a man's name and maybe Agnes B too? Often came with the most random Gift Witt Purchase. Oh and you had to fill in those credit card payment slip things Grin

Do you remember Yves Rocher? I loved their stuff

Hugosmaid · 10/06/2024 10:54

Mac Donald’s and windsurfing. It was good 😁

BardsAreAssholes · 10/06/2024 10:59

I got my ears pierced for my 14th birthday.

IWantToBeASleepingCat · 10/06/2024 11:04

My eldest turned 14 in 1999 and she got her first mobile phone. Was a Nokia then.
( might be worth something now).

TM1979 · 10/06/2024 11:06

I turned 14 in 1993. I got a musical jewellery box with a ballerina in it. I also remember getting a Forever friends alarm clock around that time. We didn’t have Argos in Ireland but we were visiting family in the uk and I was obsessed with the catalogue. Could not believe all the stuff you could get. My mam bought me the presents while we were there.
Somebody else got me a big Body Shop gift basket full of smellies.

Anonym00se · 10/06/2024 11:08

Probably an album (on cassette), or a pair of jeans or a tennis racquet.

HiFillyJonk · 10/06/2024 11:12

A shell suit.

hennybeans · 10/06/2024 08:22

‘93: I got 4 pairs of differently coloured Converse hi tops. Red, purple, turquoise, and i I can’t remember the fourth.

And did you mix and match them so you had a red one on one foot and purple on the other 🫣😂

DecafCanEffOff · 10/06/2024 11:17

I turned 14 in the early 90's and I believe I got a pair of bright green DM boots!

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 10/06/2024 11:21

I turned 14 in 1996

Big presents around that time were:

Hifi

Curling tongs

Money to go clothes shopping (I remember one year spending it on a pair of Levi's and an enormous Levi's brand t shirt)

DMs

80smonster · 10/06/2024 11:36

Dark purple Doctor Martens, money for gig tickets/to spend in Camden Town.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 10/06/2024 11:37

Modem and 50hours use of it on the phone bill. 1995.

starsinyourpies · 10/06/2024 11:37

OliveK · 10/06/2024 08:13

Not sure about birthday but I know a BIG Xmas present around that age was a little silver stereo system for my room
Double cassette, radio, record player on top. Probably about 1990. Heaven!!

This is what I was going to say! Still got mine!

socks1107 · 10/06/2024 11:48

DMs. Music tapes. Maybe a clothing item like a hoody.

Minikievs · 10/06/2024 12:00

Cherry red DMs
Books
CDs

Dabralor · 10/06/2024 12:03

I think I wanted titanic on video, nirvana tapes and also the soundtrack to Romeo and Juliet. Maybe this was later in the 90s? Anything from the body shop. I loved hair mascara so that I could look like Gwen Stefani.

I also wanted big checked shirts I could wear with awful Timberland boots and combat trousers and a crop top. I'd look state of the art if I wore that to your child's school today!!!

thesugarbumfairy · 10/06/2024 12:03

1988 - I'm fairly sure I got a Pepe denim jacket that year. Hideous thing it was.

greglet · 10/06/2024 12:11

I’m a bit younger (turned 14 in 1999) and I would have got:

CDs
Books
Clothes (from New Look, probably), or money to spend on clothes - we're talking £30 or £40
Body Shop toiletries

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/06/2024 12:12

In the 80s ... I got my ears pierced for my 13th birthday and purple docs for my 14th. For my 16th I got a silver st Christopher necklace.
