Thread 2 - Michael Mosley missing after disappearing on holiday walk

Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

Has he been to this island before?

No idea. I’m googling snakes on the island and one is a dangerous but rare one and I think there are adders there too. Locals where DP’s have a holiday home in rural France always tell us not to walk with open sandals there due to possible snake bites.

Delatron · 07/06/2024 17:19

So according to Trip Advisor the shortest way for him to walk from Pedi is up a road then down some steps. Via a smaller town called Chori or somewhere as someone suggested a refreshment stop. So all seems quite built up with options to get a drink/shade.

Unless he decided to take a more scenic route which seems unlikely if he was feeling unwell. He must have wanted to get back as quick as possible and to know he could stop again en route would have been the best option?

DramaLlamaBangBang · 07/06/2024 17:21

I was wondering if he had got delirious from the heat and gone off in a different direction. Hope he is found. His poor family.

Howbizarre22 · 07/06/2024 17:21

Given that he doesn’t appear to have gone into the sea and cannot be found anywhere on land after the town where its main roads from there I think it’s not too far fetched to think someone could’vehit him in their car, panicked & hid his body as someone up thread suggested

tobee · 07/06/2024 17:21

Re the snake bite, that seems unlikely? Surely they don't often cause instant death?

MyQuaintDog · 07/06/2024 17:22

His poor family.

Instantcustard · 07/06/2024 17:23

I don't understand what happened to his phone. Did he deliberately leave it? Because I read that he forgot it on the beach - if he literally left it on the beach that might mean he already felt disorientated. I hope he is found safe and well. I love his podcast.

Choux · 07/06/2024 17:24

I read that the friends' house in Symi town is coastal and also a report that there walk was X miles but there were shortcuts. Here is the island - pedi on the right. If the villa was near the coffee place at the top of the photo he could have cut across some of the open terrain on the right of the photo.

Heatstroke, a fall, a fall into a well, a snake bite could have befallen him while off the beaten track. There also appear to be a few ruins of windmills and houses close by where he could have sought shelter if injured or unwell.

Perhaps yesterday the focus was on the coastal part of the walk and the search has lost time now they know he completed that part of the walk.

I hope he’s simply taking time out for some reason, and hasn’t thought about letting his family know. If he’s gone off grid (no phone, no TV, no internet) he may be totally unaware of the high profile search that’s happening.

That sounds extremely unlikely though.

BreatheAndFocus · 07/06/2024 17:26

Perhaps he felt better when he reached Pedi, away from the sun on the beach, and decided to walk back to the house via a landmark or archaeological feature? He could then have set off inland and got lost. Alternatively, feeling better and knowing he had plenty of time, perhaps he decided to take the longer coastal route back to the house, but had an accident of some kind?

I'm sure I remember that he once had an episode of amnesia. He was taken to a hospital where he was recognised . I've just googled it and it was after a swim in the sea. He says it 'wiped out his memory'.

You're right. He had an episode of transient global amnesia, maybe 5 years ago. Your mind just goes blank for a while and maybe he wondered off somewhere not knowing who he was or where he was supposed to go. TGA can last from 1 to 10 or even 24 hours.

Thread 2 is better because not everyone's debating the definition of elderly or letting us know whether they do or don't take their phones on walks.
Let's not bring up the phone issue again!

Chilliandrice · 07/06/2024 17:30

Is it possible he left the island? I’m sure the authorities have considered that.

I'm not debating the likelihood of taking or not taking a phone but I think leaving a phone behind deliberately or even forgetting it at home is different to abandoning it on a beach.

thebillcollector · 07/06/2024 17:31

What's puzzling me is the umbrella.

He was walking along with his umbrella up for the shade it's unlikely he would put it away as the temperatures stayed very hot into the evening. If he'd fainted, fallen, got injured in some way, his umbrella would have been dropped and would be really easy to see - it would have floated if in the sea, blown around if on the street or rocks.
If he's gone for a dip in the sea to cool down and suffered a faint - his backpack, brolly and clothes would still be on the beach somewhere.

How on earth has he vanished without trace?

Where is the brolly?

MyQuaintDog · 07/06/2024 17:32

@Instantcustard he is part of the generation like me that did not grow up with phones. I forget my phone sometimes. My DCs would sooner forget their shoes than forget their phone.

Hopefully they have thoroughly searched this area but yes seems the focus of the search initially was in the wrong place given the CCTV.

Good points. If he fell in to the sea he would have dropped the umbrella surely.

My mum had this and literally lost 24 hours ! Neurologist said it only ever happens once to anyone.

Puygo · 07/06/2024 17:34

The fact there is no trace including the brolly does kind of indicate the possibility someone knocked him over and hid any evidence?

Trainday · 07/06/2024 17:34

I don't know what happened and I hope he's well, but it's actually really common for middle aged and older men to take themselves off for a bit when life all gets too much. I know two men who've done it recently.

MummyJ99 · 07/06/2024 16:26

This is a long shot, but there is no hospital on the island of Symi. Perhaps he left the island to go to a hospital if he was feeling unwell?

If there is a hospital or medical centre I cannot imagine his GP wife not phoning round, or getting a local speaking Greek friend, on Wednesday probably before they called the police.

Really think about it, isn't that what you would do, perhaps not straight away but by now surely?

Instantcustard · 07/06/2024 17:35

@MyQuaintDog I forget my phone all the time and also leave it behind deliberately but I've never accidentally left it in a public place.

No ones saying it was abandoned on the beach, it seems to be fairly consistently reported that it was in their holiday accomodation the whole time

This although sad, would be the best case scenario.
