Can Anyone Explain This Crazy Taylor Swift Mania?

Or am I very much alone in being vaguely foggy about it all?

She sings a few decent-ish tunes but the phenomena is a Goliath.

And I can't really think why?

Oh well, time to finish knitting this cosy cardi......

@CHEESEY13

Every Decade era has had its dance 💃 or music craze somewhere along the line,

Only difference with Taylor Swift she is not that musically talented at all,

However she is quite acctractive and savvy switched on to know how 🤔 to brand herself appeal to the masses,

I think she is quite astute woman knows her mind

and i was well impressed by her speaking out about Trump in regards of race relations issues too,

She is Gusty sassy female

Actually i think i must be Taylor Swift oldest fan ever at my age
Very 50s yrs L.o.l 🤣

Mooche · 02/06/2024 13:27

I don't get it either but it's a teen thing I think (mainly). Experienced it for myself just the other week at the Olivia Rodrigo concert but this is on another level
Having said that in my youth I saw this kind of thing with the likes of MJ, Madonna, New kids on the block, take that etc etc

cerisepanther73 · 02/06/2024 13:27

@CHEESEY13

Also there are no scandals about her and she is in your face overtly Sexual in her ways or how she brands herself

no music videos that racy unlike
Unlike the Kadishans and how 🤔 one of them became famous in the first place,

Sleepydoor · 02/06/2024 13:29

"she is not that musically talented at all"

This is an interesting take about someone who sings, plays guitar and piano and writes all of her own music.

SummaLuvin · 02/06/2024 13:30

I’ll tell you something right now, I’d rather burn my whole life down, than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning…

SummaLuvin · 02/06/2024 13:32

No OP, I think you are alone in being the only person who doesn’t like Taylor’s music. Well done for being so special and unique and not like all us other basic bitches who are too stupid to understand what good music is. And my god you knit too? Aren’t you just so superior!

RaininSummer · 02/06/2024 13:32

She's not my type of music but she is amazing. I watched the Eras concert on TV and it's really good. Must have been to keep me watching for so long. She is a great role model for young girls and women.

redfacebigdisgrace · 02/06/2024 13:35

Haha some right grumpy buggers on here. She brings a lot of joy, what’s wrong with that? I’m not a fan but I quite like all the excitement around the tour. A massive boost to the economy apparently!

Isitchill · 02/06/2024 13:38

She's just as good as The Beatles, Prince, Madonna etc. Every generation has a talented songwriter and performer.

She's probably learnt a lot from other stars mistakes and seems to have a strong team and family around her. Re-recording her songs to devalue Scooter Brauns ownership was a masterstroke.

stayathomer · 02/06/2024 13:40

Was a bit of a fan but personally thing that Fortnite song is stunning, and the video, the acting is fantastic in it. I used to be the same about Kylie in the 80s and 90s and my friend was the same about Madonna as people are now with Taylor Swift!!!

lovelydayIhave · 02/06/2024 12:52

The difference is in the quality.

The Beatles were legendary and even nowadays people still like their music.

Highly doubt that someone gonna be listening Taylor Swift after 60 years.

But people would have said the same 60 years ago. You don't know someone is a legend until they are one.

Her music is quality and I can see it being listened to in 60 years.

But also why does that matter? She is creating music which is loved now, that’s what she is trying to do. Are you suggesting that artists should be sending guessing the taste of people in 2089 and appeal to them?

she writes amazing songs with powerful lyrics. She's a strong woman. She's a great role model for girls. She's a great Live performer, puts on a phenomenal show. Eras tour is 3.5 hours!

Apart from the last point, you could have described quite a few other female singers - especially those of us that listen to smaller bands/musicians that never seem to get a big break or recognition.

She has a mega marketing machine behind her - I watched the rise and rise of Taylor Swift on Channel 4 and her business acumen is maybe just as impressive.

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2024 13:54

The average hotel room price in Edinburgh next weekend is £600. This is all part of 'eventification', a word I've made up which means that everybody needs to be part of stuff, to the point of spending what would until fairly recently have been a lifetime holiday amount to attend events.

Industries spring up to cash in, and then the hype itself generates more buzz and attention.

Each to their own but I remember my pop heroes (Madness) playing our local cinema for four pounds. Obviously there's been a bit of inflation since the 80s but this would utterly bewilder eg my grandparents. It bewilders me tbh but it's personal choice. Feel sorry for the millions of Swifties for whom seeing her live is a dream on a par with a round the world cruise.

toastofthetown · 02/06/2024 14:00

It’s truly baffling how many people reach adulthood without understanding that different people have different opinions and that’s ok. It’s actually a good thing. I’d managed that concept by about Year 2, but it’s not a difficult one so hopefully the people struggling with it will get the hang of it eventually too.

She's good but she's not exactly Prince on the guitar, he was also a great songwriter and a round musician. She's not exactly Lennon-Mccartney or Bob Dylan as a songwriter and the Beatles were musical trailblazers doing things that hadn't been done.

Taylor is a good musician, a good songwriter and performer. However her songwriting is quite one-dimensional (vast majority about men and relationships) and also co-written. The albums are heavily produced as well. Her voice isn't great either (neither are plenty of popular male singers).

Popular as she might be she isn't a musical genius.

SummaLuvin · 02/06/2024 14:06

hmm. If only Taylor had gotten completely fed up of the accusations that she wasn’t pulling her weight when it came to song writing by the time she was 19 and decided her third album (multi-award winning Speak Now) would be entirely self written so people couldn’t make these accusations…

She does write about a wide array of topics, but like most artists who don’t receive criticism for it, she does focus mainly on the shared human experience of love and I don’t see why that is a bad thing.

YellowHairband · 02/06/2024 14:08

Aren't the vast majority of all songs about relationships of some kind or another? This feels like an odd standard to hold her to, when the criticism applies to the whole music industry.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/06/2024 14:19

Fair play to the woman. She's an astute businesswoman and a good performer. I like her attitude and the fact that she's stood up to bullies and legal challenges. I just think her music (both lyrics and tunes) is wildly overrated. I don't dislike it - it just doesn't do anything for me.

Amazing songs? Powerful lyrics? Nah, they all sound like they've been written by a teenager and only relate to teens. Literally none of her songs have impacted society in ways like other singers. None will last, none will be or are listened to and loved by people who aren't even a fan but 'just like the song'. Who exactly will listen to Taylor Swift, decades from now??
I couldn't stand her music back when she started during my teen years and I can't stand it now. I couldn't even name one song from Taylor.

I'm so glad I'm drawn towards to Madonna. She's got a decent legacy and she's worked hard to get to where she is now and she's from a regular family. She's an incredible role model for women. There are at least 5 Madonna songs that most people really enjoy and name even if they don't like her. She writes her own songs and is in full control of her career. She's phenomenal.
I look forward to the day when I can pass her name on.

I guess these things are important to some people.

Personally, I've only vaguely heard of Taylor Swift. It was on the news on Radio 4 a couple of weeks ago that she had released a new album and I remember thinking "why is this on the national news? Who is this person?"!

I haven't a clue what she looks like or what sort of songs she sings. I suppose I might have heard one or two of them on the radio, as I sometimes listen to Radio 2, but not paid attention to the name of the singer, so couldn't name a single one of her songs!

You're just soooo coooool and non populist ooohhhh you're special Wink

Crinkle77 · 02/06/2024 14:23

GagaBinks · 02/06/2024 12:18

I don't get it at all. Her songs are so bland to me.

Totally agree, bland bubble gum pop and completely forgettable tunes. Don't get the mass hysteria at all.

TheaBrandt · 02/06/2024 14:25

She’s far better than the Beatles imo.
