Can Anyone Explain This Crazy Taylor Swift Mania?

CHEESEY13 · 02/06/2024 11:52

Or am I very much alone in being vaguely foggy about it all?

She sings a few decent-ish tunes but the phenomena is a Goliath.

And I can't really think why?

Oh well, time to finish knitting this cosy cardi......

I wouldn't compare The Beatles with Taylor Swift...

Agree. Beatles were shite.

Fizbosshoes · 02/06/2024 15:25

Hotels putting prices up is just supply and demand - like they would when there's a big event/festival/sports event in the area.
Or tourist areas changing prices during school holidays.
Marathons, concerts, festivals, Pride etc would all have an impact on hotel prices, parking spaces, uber charges, taxi fares etc.....so not really Taylor Swift specific

SabreIsMyFave · 02/06/2024 15:26

@cerisepanther73

Only difference with Taylor Swift she is not that musically talented at all,

However she is quite acctractive and savvy switched on to know how 🤔 to brand herself appeal to the masses,
Actually i think i must be Taylor Swift oldest fan ever at my age

Bit of an oxymoron. You say she is not musically talented, but then call yourself a fan.

You are NOT a Taylor Swift fan if you state she has no musical talent!

Agree with many posters on here, yet ANOTHER Tedious 'I don't get the Taylor Swift hype' thread. YAWWWWWWWN .......................🙄

As a few posters have said, God FORBID a beautiful and talented young woman makes a massively successful career for herself, and has 100s of millions of followers. It's like some people can't STAND it. If it was a man with the same level of success, we would not be seeing threads like this. Some people cannot BEAR a woman to be super successful. (Even some women can't stand it!)

The jealousy and resentment is real! 😆

As a few posters have said, it really annoys some men too... that a WOMAN is so successful. Grin Not my DH though, he is a huge fan. Bigger than me. Not as big as our 2 daughters though. They are both seeing her twice this year in concert, and have already seen her 5 times over the past few years. Me and DH have seen her once. We all loved her. Smile

CatamaranViper · 02/06/2024 15:27

I'm 34 and I know a handful of her songs. DH, DS and I often sing shake it off when ever we need to shake something (from making a milkshake to feeling a bit blue). It's just a bit of fun.

I can quite enjoy some pop music and she writes brilliant pop songs. I mostly prefer to listen to cheesy 80s, 00s punk pop and musical soundtracks so she isn't really my cup of tea but I applaud her success. She clearly works hard and seems nice with her fans.

Agree. Beatles were shite.

I wouldn't say Beatles were shite, and they had some amazing material. But they also released some drivel, and to say 'no way will people be listening to Taylor Swift in 60 years' is just ludicrous. Of course people will! We are listening to Beatles stuff still, and their material is no better than Taylor Swift.

I would also bet my house, that the people dissing Taylor and saying she is crap/boring/average la la la, have not listened to more than 5 songs of hers. If that! She has over 200!

VinnieVanDog · 02/06/2024 15:31

SummaLuvin · 02/06/2024 15:09

Of course there is, and I'm not saying anyone should justify why they don't like any musician. But I don't make statements implying I'm knowledgeable about 'all' an artist's songs if I don't like them, that is ludicrous. I would simply say, they're not my cup of tea and move on my with life.

Generally people are more vociferous in their likes and dislikes when it comes to creative stuff though aren't we? I am anyway, tend to say 'oh I LOVE them' even when we haven't heard all their stuff and likewise 'I HATE them!' when the same applies.

I'd be interested to know what 'drivel' the Beatles released. 🙄 From their early days they were recognised across music for the quality of their songwriting/harmonies/composition and as they went on they influenced huge numbers of bands/musicians who in turn influence what we listen to today - that's why they're still listened to.

Taylor Swift is obviously talented but her output is just of it's time, it fits in doesn't create any new ground or have anything special about it compared to eg Amy Winehouse. She's popular because it's a phenomenon, like Mama Mia, The Greatest Showman or other such stuff that brings ppl together - that's fine because it's joyful and harmless but it's pointless trying to pretend she some kind of musical genius - her genius is for marketing herself.

YellowHairband · 02/06/2024 15:41

The Beatles were legendary and even nowadays people still like their music.

Highly doubt that someone gonna be listening Taylor Swift after 60 years.

Claiming to know what music taste will be in 60 years is pointless. Some people in the 60s would have said the Beatles were never going to last - I imagine they were as convinced in the accuracy of their disdain as you are in yours.

Coughsweet · 02/06/2024 15:49

She’s a good artist and is good at making her fans feel “seen”. Despite the private jets and billionaire status she still projects as “normal”. I think quite a large age range relate to her because she was so young when she started - a 15 year old can look up YouTube and see her at a similar age talking about similar concerns to the ones they have despite her current reality as massively successful businesswoman in her mid 30s. Also, when the aim was to be a country star, including the name of one of the biggest country artists at the time in the title of your first song is a genius move in the era of Google.

Coughsweet · 02/06/2024 15:54

I like her but I got far more interested in going to a concert after the fuss started. I knew how to get presale codes but didn’t do it because I wasn’t that bothered but approaching the regular sale I really wanted tickets so if others are like me there must be a degree of FOMO.

Sleepydoor · 02/06/2024 16:03

kitsuneghost · 02/06/2024 15:22

Why are people so confused by the concept that people enjoy a singer iwhich makes them popular and kids share music so popularity spreads.
It is really not a difficult concept
It has happened since mozart

I was just thinking about Mozart in this context. I have heard so many people talk about how overrated Mozart is because he's so popular and more accessible. This all smacks of music snobbery to me.

You don't like Taylor Swift's music? Perfectly fine. But to say she's not musically talented is just objectively not true. Is she a musical genius? I'm not even sure how you determine that, but she's a talented musician and is definitely a marketing and branding genius. You can't tell me that Madonna is a great musician but Swift isn't -- that's just you not liking her music.

You think it's absurd that people pay so much money to see her concerts? I think it's absurd that the average cost of a Superbowl ticket was $8,600. I would never spend that to watch a bunch of men play football but I understand that for some people it is a once in a lifetime event that they would rather do than go on a trip around the world.

You think her fans are fanatic and strange? Watch an old video of the fans at a Beatles or Elvis concert. Tell me those girls (and some women) wouldn't have given anything to go to a concert.

TBF, I don't know a single person under about 45 who would listen to the Beatles.
To me they sound very dated and "of their time" which has no appeal to me.

Coughsweet · 02/06/2024 16:08

I have an 18 year old DC who loves the Beatles and is a massive Swiftie.

The local sixth form college is full of lads listening to The Beatles.

I'm not a massive fan of Taylor but I was obsessed with Madonna back in the day. Teens need their idols.

She Loves You?

But I agree Taylor Swift isn't a genius. It's the people objecting to her popularity because she's not a great musician. Like that has ever been the case that you have a bunch of overzealous fans because your music is genius. And let's not forget that although The Beatles may have seemed groundbreaking to some, they boldly ripped off a lot of other musicians, particularly black musicians.

The classic songs that The Beatles ripped off

The Beatles have had many great original melodies throughout their career, but the people that they took from deserve just as much credit.

The yellow submarine is drivel personified.

happybluefern · 02/06/2024 16:16

I think what come across in the documentary about her (slightly loose use of the word documentary) is that she is hyper-focused on her brand and her career building essentially plays out the same way a multi national corporation does. She’s like Apple or Disney. I think she is unusual in being able to sustain a kind of rigid standard of introspection that most of us only have time for as teenagers and this allows her to stay ahead of her fan base and kind of give them what they want. It actually struck me as a bit sad that she hasn’t reached the ‘ah fuck it’ stage of life. We are the same age and I can’t imagine doing as much navel gazing as she does. Essentially she cares more about her success than others and has the tools to be good enough to build a brand from - I think the brand has outstripped her talent but that’s the same for many things.

I do find her fascinating and she can obviously write a decent pop song but I think she comes across extremely highly strung and very, very self absorbed.

StripedTomatoes · 02/06/2024 12:08

I've no idea! She's playing in Edinburgh next week. They've set up some sort of Swiftie fan hub, there's a cafe doing Taylor Swift themed afternoon teas, bars are doing themed cocktails. I've never seen that for any other pop star.

Don't forget shopping all the homeless people away so that they're not seen...

TheaBrandt · 02/06/2024 16:19

She donates generously to local charities in the cities she plays in

TheaBrandt · 02/06/2024 16:19

How is an American singer personally responsible for homeless crisis in random Scottish cities. Quite a reach…

Hecatoncheires · 02/06/2024 16:22

I’m going to see her next week. I wasn’t a huge fan but my DD is so I bought the tickets. Having spent the past near-11 months properly listening to TS’s music, I’m a proper covert. Her story-telling is quite something. I’m so glad that my DD and I are going together. It’ll be something she will remember doing with me for the rest of her life (not that I’m deliberately trying to sound dramatic!) when I’m long gone. I wish I had these kind of memories with my own mum to look back on.

As for all the hype and is-she-is-she-not talented…. My mum used to say “each to their own”. Pretty much covers it.

happybluefern · 02/06/2024 16:26

SummaLuvin · 02/06/2024 13:30

I’ll tell you something right now, I’d rather burn my whole life down, than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning…

Feel like this lyric is a good example of why some of us just don’t get wild enthusiasm for Taylor Swift 😂 keep seeing this one on tik tok and thinking - why is this a good lyric? I will happily listen to Taylor Swift when washing up but I mean, it’s fine. The lyrics are fine. The last album was so close to sounding like a Daughter album from about 10 years ago I went back and listened to that and thought - well these are the lyrics Taylor Swift wishes she was writing.

Swiftea · 02/06/2024 16:34

As my username suggests, I’m a fan. I agree that she may not have a ‘Billie Jean’ song, but Love Story, Style, Trouble, 22, You Belong With Me etc are all pop classics.

What she excels at is capturing a feeling, which is what inspires the fanaticism. So Fifteen captures being 15, The Best Day feeling left out at school, All Too Well, having your heart broken for the first time.

What makes her special IMO is that she is a ‘basic white girl’. As she herself said, she is not ‘sexy, edgy or cool’. And frankly most of us are not. So even though she is beautiful and fantastically rich, she knows what it is like to feel like an outsider (Mirrorball), to have a relationship where the guy isn’t prepared to commit (You’re Losing Me) or to have a guy lovebomb you and then ghost you (The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived). And when she is upset, she captures exactly what that feels in a way that is honest - more honest that I would dare to be with my best friend.

So for an industry based around being sexy, edgy and cool (Madonna, Rihanna,, Billie Eilish, even Joni Mitchell) being able to express what it is like to be a ‘basic white girl’ is pretty unique.

Isitchill · 02/06/2024 16:37

Men born in the 1940's do not have a monopoly on outstanding song writing.

HereILayStillAndBreathless · 02/06/2024 16:45

I'm a metalhead, so her music ain't my bag. But I do like her even if I don't listen to her stuff. I like how she's 'normal', grounded, friendly to her fans and not an up-herself sun shines of of her ass diva like Adele or Beyonce. And also not a plastic alien looking sing-it-with-my-crotch trashbag like Madonna or Cardi B.

She's talented, writes her lyrics, can play an instrument and can sing. Not the strongest vocalist out there, but certainly better than Madonna who cannot sing for shit. She looks normal, dresses normal, isn't vulgar. A self-made woman. What's not to like.
