Can Anyone Explain This Crazy Taylor Swift Mania?

Or am I very much alone in being vaguely foggy about it all?

She sings a few decent-ish tunes but the phenomena is a Goliath.

And I can't really think why?

Oh well, time to finish knitting this cosy cardi......

I don’t follow the discourse but does she have any open critics? I don’t mean randos on MN but people in the entertainment industry who don’t follow the party line on every release?

I remember Madonna and MJ, the big Britpop bands etc all had vocal critics who didn’t hold back.

Are people allowed to criticise TS without suffering a massive backlash/punishment?

I'm not a fan or anything, but, from what I see it's about 50/50 between being loved and hated.

I've seen a lot of criticism of her the last couple of days because of her weight, which is bloody disgusting, and then every time she dates someone else she is dragged through the press like mad.

It seems to be fine to hate her for any reason whatsoever.

The difference is in the quality.

The Beatles were legendary and even nowadays people still like their music.

Highly doubt that someone gonna be listening Taylor Swift after 60 years.

The Beatles were shite.

They just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

DodoTired · 02/06/2024 19:28

LOL, Madonna as a writer of meaningful deep lyrics? 🤣🤣 with a strong voice? Give me a break. I like Madonna and she is of course an icon, but she certainly didn’t become an icon because she’s got amazing voice and strong standout lyrics 🤣

Elvis - did he sing about anything other than love? Nope

and btw I love Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc but Beatles are very boring and very dated. I get that they were trailblazers etc but lots of their music didn’t age very well. Yellow submarine is ridiculous. So please:)

xyz111 · 02/06/2024 19:28

It's not as though it's never happened before though. Look at Michael Jackson. The world used to go absolutely crazy for him. And the Taylor mania probably isn't even as crazy as that was.

CatamaranViper · 02/06/2024 19:29

DinaofCloud9 · 02/06/2024 16:11

The local sixth form college is full of lads listening to The Beatles.

I'm not a massive fan of Taylor but I was obsessed with Madonna back in the day. Teens need their idols.

Perhaps so, but that's not the same everywhere.

I can't even remember the last time I heard a Beatles song tbh. Queen however I still hear their music everywhere. Freddie was a proper showman and it seems this generation see TS as one too.

Hedgeoffressian · 02/06/2024 19:29

lovelydayIhave · 02/06/2024 12:35

I wouldn't compare The Beatles with Taylor Swift...

Really? Why not?

MagentaRocks · 02/06/2024 19:32

A lot of stars might not be the best singers but they have the so called X factor.

The only TS song I know is shake it off. I probably could sing along to others on the radio not knowing its her. But, that doesn't mean she isn't good.

I was an 80s teen. I loved Madonna (saw her in concert), wham, simple minds and all the other cheesy songs that are not musical masterpieces but they remind me of my youth.

The same as the spice Girls, Robbie etc. People who love TS now will listen to her music in 40, 50 years and smile and enjoy it.

How is an American singer personally responsible for homeless crisis in random Scottish cities. Quite a reach…

She's not - there was an article in the paper that they had moved homeless people out of the city because of it.

It wasn't - they just said that there were no hotels available if anyone had presented at homeless over those few days - presumably exactly the same as at festival time etc. just down to them being full!

"she is not that musically talented at all"

This is an interesting take about someone who sings, plays guitar and piano and writes all of her own music.

It’s probably because she’s a bit too ‘girly’ for a lot of the posters on here. I can imagine my sister in law holding the same opinion of her. Judge her by her looks and what she wears and instantly makes the assumption that it must mean she has zero talent and it’s all down to her looks. Classic inverse leftist snobbery.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 02/06/2024 19:38

Bbq1 · 02/06/2024 17:53

I can't understand it either. Her music leaves me cold and I don't think she is particularly talented
I'm in Liverpool, she's here soon and there has been a giant mural commissioned of her in the city centre, there's a Taylor trail, a craft event and a Swift hub by the train station on the days she's here. I'm assuming her fan base is mostly 8 - 18.

I read a something that was apparently a quote from the council saying they had spent £50k I think it was and it was the cheapest PR campaign they had ever done - it's been in the national news etc.

I think there was also a comment along the lines of due to the age of many of the fans if Liverpool put on a good event that then those same fans will think about the city when they come to choosing a uni.

I've heard an interesting theory from someone that the reason she is so popular is because every decade needs a signature artist, someone who is "the thing" of its period and resonates with most people somehow. So this decade doesn't have its own Beatles, or Queen, or Bob Dylan (or whatever, these are just examples) - its Taylor Swift. Partly because the whole current music scene is dire, and partly because she is "of its time".

Time will tell is she is going to be someone remembered and loved in 60 years time, or if she is going to be a bit of nostalgic fun not taken too seriously, like the Monkees or Bay City Rollers.

I don't think her music is bad, and I like her feistiness, but also I can't see how she is better than other contemporary music I hear sometimes on the radio - there seem to be a lot of very similar stuff around.

Edited

She'll still be popular and remembered. Very little current popular music will be in general.

Tons of 60s and 70s music is still popular and played everywhere 50-60 years later.

Also Liverpool has been overlooked for years for major acts so is hyped for it. It's only recently Anfield has been used for concerts.

The biggest artists tend to use Manchester for the region when they tour UK.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/06/2024 19:46

No a clue why she's so famous. She's dull as ditchwater and not especially creative, imo. My kids agree.

Yes because the music of the 60s and 70s was a time of great pop music of all kinds, not true of the current time and certainly not true of TS.

I think it's different though, the scale of Taylor Swifts success is unprecedented, and massive

I don't think it's particularly sudden though, she's been going for over a decade!
The only difference is she does multiple things and is a woman. Beckham is diversifying but is a one trick pony. Those crisp packets annoy me too - so fake and about 5% larger than the real thing.

Bullsey · 02/06/2024 20:50

So many people have rose tinted glasses for old music because it's what you grew up with and what you choose to listen to now.

Taylor is what this generation of teenagers listen to now, and what they will look back on with nostalgia.

Let's face it, she's hard working, writes all her own music, pays all of her staff a proper wage, stood up for herself against the establishment and got her music back, and she's not into underage kids like a lot of beloved pop stars from years gone by. (Michael Jackson, David Bowie, R Kelly, Jimmy Page, jerry lee lewis, Elvis, etc)

I bet back in your day, your parents used to tell you your choice of music was rubbish - well congratulations i guess, you've become your parents 😁

VinnieVanDog · 02/06/2024 20:57

"Let's face it, she's hard working, writes all her own music, pays all of her staff a proper wage, stood up for herself against the establishment and got her music back, and she's not into underage kids"

That's great but it doesn't make her music any more interesting.

I don't think you're her target market if you still haven't moved on past 60s and 70s music.

To an extent but music is becoming less memorable every decade.

I remember through the 2000s going to 80s bars which was two decades prior and there was already a big nostalgia for 80s music (even more so now if anything). There's not a big nostalgia for 2000s music, two decades on, because it's less memorable. That's not to say some songs and artists aren't still well remembered.

Go to karaoke bars or a live cover set in the pub and most of the songs will be 20+ years old. Same with a lot of DJ sets at weddings, parties and the like.

The vast majority of modern music is disposable and instantly forgettable (outside of evoking certain memories). Certainly chart music. I think a fair amount of Taylor's songs will stand the test of time quite well and still get plenty of air play in 20+ years. Utter rubbish (to my tastes) of someone like Cardi B won't be.

Bullsey · 02/06/2024 21:06

Those decades are regularly cited as the most important for pop music - by musicians since then and people who just care about good music. I grew up in the 80s, I love loads of music from that decade, from 90s and from 00s I like some offbeat current music (currently listening to McConie's Freak Zone on 6 Music) - I like loads of different types of music including classical, jazz and electronic.

I just don't like stale, generic music so you're right, I'm not her target market!

No OP, I think you are alone in being the only person who doesn’t like Taylor’s music. Well done for being so special and unique and not like all us other basic bitches who are too stupid to understand what good music is. And my god you knit too? Aren’t you just so superior!

Shes not the Stasi. Backlash from who?! What an odd question. Shes not widely criticised because shes widely liked as a decent sort and her music is considered by millions to be great.
