Can Anyone Explain This Crazy Taylor Swift Mania?

Or am I very much alone in being vaguely foggy about it all?

She sings a few decent-ish tunes but the phenomena is a Goliath.

And I can't really think why?

Oh well, time to finish knitting this cosy cardi......

One direction, The Beatles, Elvis personally no idea but it is not new

Exactly.

This must be the tenth thread on the same topic I've seen in the past couple of months, so you're clearly not alone OP.

But a phenomenally popular pop star isn't a new thing. That pop star being a seemingly pretty normal and sensible woman who is a good role model to young girls IS a new thing so I have no problem with her being celebrated.

Exactly - I don't like David Beckham (who seems to be everywhere all of a sudden from Ali Express to Walkers) and don't like his voice or style. I cba to start a thread asking why men like him so much they would buy crisps from him.

He is promoting a football tournament I think. Hence his appearance everywhere. A global football star/ambassador even though his career has been over some years

Read the guardian article today for a brief explanation

redfacebigdisgrace · 02/06/2024 12:45

Well I don’t get the hype but I think she seems a pretty good role model for young women and girls. Maybe that’s part of it? Mums buying the tickets are happy to encourage it rather than some of the more over sexualised stuff?

gamerchick · 02/06/2024 12:46

I've no clues why people get obsessed over performers. Any of them, to the point they will pull out some serious coin to be squished in and stood on with other obsessed people.

Never got it, never will get it so don't give it much thought

Edinburgh went mental for Harry the other year too. There were multicoloured feathers floating around for weeks after!

Euston Station was littered with feathers too.

What Black American billionaires tried to shut her down? Confused

Maybe Tyler Perry? 🤔

The Beatles produced some great music, but they were not great musicians or singers. Their albums were well produced in the studio. Why not compare them to Taylor Swift?

The difference is in the quality.

The Beatles were legendary and even nowadays people still like their music.

Highly doubt that someone gonna be listening Taylor Swift after 60 years.

changeison · 02/06/2024 12:53

Kanye West and Tyler Perry have a problem with her. I was in a Uni library recently and a large group of black students described her as a basic white girl, amongst other comments, which was a bit 😱😳

itsgettingweird · 02/06/2024 12:55

I don't get it either.

I asked a "swiftly" who I work with.

Apparently she's just Taylor swift and great.

That's clear as mud then Grin

DojaPhat · 02/06/2024 12:56

@AlpineMuesli Apparently Kanye - for some dodgy phone call. I thought maybe when he jumped on stage to hijack her award, though tbf I do get her appeal across 'the daughters of the witches you couldn't burn'.

changeison · 02/06/2024 12:14

she writes amazing songs with powerful lyrics. She's a strong woman. She's a great role model for girls. She's a great Live performer, puts on a phenomenal show. Eras tour is 3.5 hours!

This!

NotDavidTennant · 02/06/2024 12:58

There have been big pop stars before but the demand for the Eras tour does seem to be pretty unprecedented.

I can't remember another situation where so many people have been so desperate to get tickets that they've been willing to go anywhere in the country or even in Europe to see an artist.

MaryBeardsShoes · 02/06/2024 13:00

Oh, here we go again!

EasyPeelings · 02/06/2024 13:01

I guess these things are important to some people.

Personally, I've only vaguely heard of Taylor Swift. It was on the news on Radio 4 a couple of weeks ago that she had released a new album and I remember thinking "why is this on the national news? Who is this person?"!

I haven't a clue what she looks like or what sort of songs she sings. I suppose I might have heard one or two of them on the radio, as I sometimes listen to Radio 2, but not paid attention to the name of the singer, so couldn't name a single one of her songs!

Simonjt · 02/06/2024 13:02

We saw her in Stockholm recently, she was okay, but nothing amazing (and often out of tune). But its fairly normal for teenagers to have a celebrity obsession.

Sleepydoor · 02/06/2024 13:06

MaryBeardsShoes · 02/06/2024 13:00

Oh, here we go again!

Yep, let's all make sure a hugely successful woman doesn't get too big for her britches...

She's a hugely prolific solo artist with some less serious addictive pop hits and some more interesting albums like Evermore. I doubt the people who are so dismissive of her have listened to all of her music to be so scathing.

eddiemairswife · 02/06/2024 13:06

Is she one of those young women who don't own skirts and have to sing in their knickers? Oh, for the days of Alma Cogan, always fully clothed.

CelesteCunningham · 02/06/2024 13:07

WelshNerd · 02/06/2024 12:29

There's actually a really interesting article on the guardian about how Taylor Swift has got to the level of success she currently has.

https://amp.theguardian.com/music/article/2024/jun/02/taylor-swift-impact-records-eras-tour

I really enjoyed that, thanks :)

No, not particularly.

She's flashing some upper arm here - is that allowed.

(Yes, I know in some of her other outfits she's wearing something short. But since I'm not offended by the sight of a thigh, I don't care)

No she isn’t. Her tour costumes range from leotards, to T-shirts and shorts, to ethereal floaty dresses, to full-on ball gowns.

LoreleiG · 02/06/2024 13:13

Half my family adores her. She is not my cup of tea. I am probably just a bit too old to get it. If saying that is hate-ridden Taylor-bashing then apologies Taylor.

AreYouShittingMe · 02/06/2024 13:14

I'm not a Swifty, but I'm loving the hype around the tour.
Music bringing people together and spreading joy- and a positive female role model at that.
I'm someone who gets an immense about of joy from live music, especially surrounded by people who love the artist as much as I do.
I don't get the hype about lots of things others get excited about, but I love that (most people) have something that brings them joy.
As PP have said, people have different tastes. Sometimes it's hard to explain why you like something when it just speaks to you.
