Can Anyone Explain This Crazy Taylor Swift Mania?

Or am I very much alone in being vaguely foggy about it all?

She sings a few decent-ish tunes but the phenomena is a Goliath.

And I can't really think why?

Oh well, time to finish knitting this cosy cardi......

Remember after Dd was entirely screwed over and kicked out of her friendship group singing “one day I’ll be living in a great big city and all you’re ever going to be is mean”
at the top of our voices in the kitchen was great therapy!

Scuse me while I cross off “all she writes about is boyfriends” from my Reasons Why Taylor Swift Is Crap bingo card…

Songs Taylor has written…

Bigger Than The Whole Sky - about miscarriage

The Man & Mad Woman - about sexism, misogyny and the patriarchy

Ronan- about a 3 year old boy who died of neuroblastoma

Dress- about sex

Champagne Problems- about turning down a marriage proposal

Soon You’ll Get Better- about her mother’s battle with cancer

Epiphany- about the trauma of witnessing death

Marjorie- about her Grandmother passing away

Thank you - and to the others that responded to me. I stand corrected!!

You have to laugh at bland and generic, you really do.

Not a musical genius? Don't think there is a test for that. But given people have been listening to her music for seventeen years already a longevity of sixty years ars hardly seems out of the way crazy I don't think.

These threads are getting so dull, and it's always Taylor.

TheTwirlyPoos · 03/06/2024 08:16

Eh I read these threads I try to imagine people saying these things in real life and can't keep a straight face 'the bands I listen to have interesting things to say'. It's so cringe and superior!

Blimey. Ok... I've just always liked music with a bit of a message (providing it's good music!). Apologies if that's so cringey.

TheTwirlyPoos · 03/06/2024 09:11

So do lots of people. That's why lots of people like Taylor :-)

TheaBrandt · 03/06/2024 11:19

And the First World War. And the month of August. In fact reckon her songs are actually far more eclectic than most artists which is why it’s so weird she gets repeatedly accused of only singing about love and relationships.

Coughsweet · 03/06/2024 12:22

She does sing about them a lot though. Very detailed and specific. Sometimes when I’ve been listening for hours I feel like I’ve been in the company of a friend who’s been going on and on to me abour their boyfriend. A bit of Ylow Submarine usually sets me right.

SabreIsMyFave · 03/06/2024 13:16

As many posters have said, Taylor sings about a lot of stuff, other than love - and ex boyfriends. A few posters have named many other subjects that hers songs feature.

One of my favourite songs is 'the best day' where she sings about her mother, and what an amazing relationship she has with her - and how wonderful it was growing up on her farm (with her dad and her brother and her mom also.) It's a lovely song!

I do piss myself laughing at people say nobody's going to be listening to Taylor Swift in 50 or 60 years.' Like somebody said 'nobody cares about Madonna.' Madonna's music - especially from the 1980s and 1990s are still being played today. 35 to 40 years later. A few songs of Madonna's songs from 43-44 years ago is still played today!

Ditto the Spice Girls. So iconic ... their music is still being played 30 years later. Kate Bush's stuff is still being played 45 years after it was first released, and yes, O. K. The Beatles stuff is still being played 50-60 years later.

In addition to Madonna, and The Spice Girls, I still hear (on the radio, AND on music shows/music programmes on TV,) songs from 35-60 years ago, by the Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, Slade, Wings, Queen, ELO, Foreigner, Heart, Cyndi Lauper, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Elton John, George Michael, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Olivia Newton-John, Prince, Whitney Houston, Cher, Kim Wilde, Michael Bolton, Four Tops, Earth, Wind, & Fire, David Bowie, The Real Thing, Hot Chocolate, Bob Marley, Blondie, and many MANY other acts that started out in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Not a week goes by when I don't hear a song by one of these acts..... 100s of songs by multiple dozens of bands and artists - some from 50 to 60 years ago ... still regularly played.

Why anyone would think that nobody's going to be listening to Taylor Swift 50-60 years after she first became famous as popular just eludes me! Of course people will still be listening to her. Do people even look at what they write on here, before clicking POST?! 😆

Young adults often have strong views too. Mine do.

You clearly don't know much about Elivs and people of all ages across the world love both Elvis and The Beatles. You just cannot compare Swift to Elvis, The Beatles or Led Zep, Queen etc. Look how big The Spice Girls were back in the day, far bigger than TS but they probably won't be mentioned in 60 odd years

I was specifically responding to criticism that she only sings about love. Well so did Elvis and he was and remains huge. You need to improve your reading comprehension.

as to “just cannot compare” - you haven’t provided any arguments, just stated your personal opinion 🤷‍♀️
Spice Girls music btw is still being played 30 years on

TheaBrandt · 03/06/2024 20:34

Some artists still sound fresh and amazing all these years later eg Portishead and massive attack and definitely Kate Bush. To me Taylor Swift will be similar. Such high quality music. Madonnas to me is like wham and the spice girls great fun and the music brings back memories and is fun to dance to but the songs themselves aren’t particularly great!

DinaofCloud9 · 03/06/2024 22:06

Some of you Taylor Swift fans are taking criticism of her so personally.

I love Madonna and have for years but I don't get all offended if someone criticises her. We all like and dislike different things and that's ok.

Coughsweet · 03/06/2024 23:13

I think that’s partly due to her “normal” vibes. I think she gets read as the ultimate big sister of pop whereas Madonna was an imperious queen, hard to identify with and certainly not feel protective towards.

Maybe that’s because you’re not constantly seeing thread after thread claiming Madonna is crap, bland, talentless, overrated and questioning the sense and taste of anyone who likes her?

xsquared · 03/06/2024 23:52

I'm not a huge fan, but her music is catchy, and I admire her for standing up against misogynistic men.

Her fan base isn't predominantly 8 to 18 though, so no idea why a pp thought so. The people I know who managed to get tickets to her tour were proudly announcing them over fb and whatsapp, and they range from 30 to 50+.

These are not just parents getting them for their dcs, but true fans judging from the Taylor song references that went on for ages our running club WhatsApp group.

Can anyone explain why people keep posting vaguely foggy, faux wide eyed nasty threads about people liking Taylor Swift?

It just seems so cunty?

Coughsweet · 04/06/2024 00:52

Does it matter? I like Taylor Swift, I can chose to answer the question or ignore, who cares. She’s very talented and is phenomenally hard working, seems to live her life far more graciously than I’m sure I would if I were her and has got a good handle on marketing and engaging with fans. Very interesting lyrically, more so if you know a bit about her - which I think ties into the marketing, she clearly pays attention to what her fans have paid attention to.

I told my Swiftie DC that my favourite song on TTPD was Clara Bow and she was a bit nonplussed. She likes Down Bad which I usually skip. I don’t really like Getaway Car but I do like Paper Rings which I know some others find underwhelming.

I don’t really think the Spice Girls stuff has held up very well but it’s nice to hear it and feel nostalgic. I think All Saints holds up better, Pure Shores is a fantastic song.

If someone thinking TS fans are all teenage girls then they don’t know what music teenage girs are into.

Yes that's a good point. There have been a few threads about her recently so maybe people are just fed up.

Yeah, some music is just a throwback to a place and time. Madonna in the 80s, Spice Girls in the 90s. Good pop music all the same, certainly by today's standards. Madonna did write some great songs.

Kate Bush or Fleetwood Mac stands the test of time. I think Taylor is more like that, although the extent of her stardom is more symptomatic of the lack of good songwriters these days. Chart music is unadulterated rubbish. If it was the 70s she blends in a lot more as there was so much brilliance. There's not now. That was the Beatles initial popularity - right place, right time.
