What radio station do you listen to ?

I feel a bit lost as can’t find a decent radio station to listen to any more.

Love R4 but finding it quite repetitive and dull and often hate the too long plays.

I am too old for R1.

R2 seems to have awful presenters now.

I miss Graham Norton at the weekends.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent station with good mix of music and talk ?

I followed Ken Bruce over to GHR
I hadn't been enamoured on the R2 playlists for a while. Hated Scott Mills taking over from Steve Wright- he sounded as bored as I felt. Vernon Kay taking over was the final straw. There doesn't seem to be any balance between gushing/ gabbling or mumbling.

While the adverts on commercial radio are annoying, it reached the point where there was as much droney new music on R2 anyway.

I wasn't expecting to feel too old for R2 by my early 40s!
I just pick the odd thing I like like Sounds of the 80s on Sounds for running.

I put BBC 6 Music on in the kitchen as soon as I get up, switch it off at bedtime. Our cat is an indie kit and enjoys it while we’re at work. I subscribe to Shaun Keaveney’s Patreon too, and miss him on the radio so much.

Yes I miss Sean as well. I got into 6 Music when I started working from home during the pandemic, had never listened before. Also very disappointed Steve Lamacq is only on on Monday now!

I usually listen to Radio Lancashire even though I'm not in Lancashire. (Thank heavens for digital radio!). I came upon it by accident whilst on a short break in Lancashire and just stuck with it as I like the presenters. It's not "high brow" and just basic/generic news, so not for someone who wants to listen to current affairs, but it's a good mix of music and general chat and perfect to listening to in the car.

If I want some in depth news conversation/commentary, I tend to listen to Radio 5, and also listen to the occasional BBC radio podcast.

Now most local radios have been bought out by Heart/Virgin, etc., I don't listen to them anymore. I used to love our local independent radio station, when it was genuinely local with local presenters, local news, etc., but Heart bought it and just turned it into another generic "pretend" local radio - no thanks.

LBC if I fancy listening to conversation. Otherwise Heart Dance, Kisstory, Centreforce or Greatest Hits. Just wish my DAB in my car was better as I can guarantee I lose signal when it's playing a song I love!

6music in the week - I find Saturdays awful though (too much experimental jazz for me). I listen to a lot of programmes on BBC sounds too though the app is hard going.

Norugratsatall · 03/06/2024 23:09

Radio 3. Used to listen to Classic FM but my old radio can't pick up DAB+. I don't miss the ads anyway! And I love how much new interesting music I'm now hearing on R3.

Pinkapron · 03/06/2024 23:37

You definitely need to get the Virgin Radio app. The Ryan Tubridy show will help with missing Graham Norton! Go to schedule, and just pick that show, or that’s what I do 😊

SylviaStrong · 04/06/2024 06:16

I hop between radio 4 and 2 and virgin at the weekends.

This thread has been helpful as I was in a bit of a radio rut and now will expand my listening and will enjoy trying new stations.

Tinkerbot · 04/06/2024 06:24

My car has DAB radio. I like talk radio so can now listen to The World SErvice - I find it v interesting, I also listen to Radio 4, often downloads on my phone, but there is very little imv on other countries and it gives you a more balanced view of where the UK stands if you hear info about everywhere else.

BigDahliaFan · 04/06/2024 06:26

A lot of podcasts, so I pick and choose radio 4. I can’t listen to it all day as drives me mad….too smug. Though in car it’s usually what I have on and you can find some gems.

also like Rory and Alastair Campbell and the News Agent.

dH likes Radio 2 but again for me the likes of Rylan small doses only. The music is more me though.

radio 6 for music sometimes just to broaden what I listen to.

virgin breakfast show on weekends and broadcasting house on listen again later on.

Absolute 80s in the car

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 04/06/2024 07:21

At Mum’s (for care), Radio 4, 4Extra & a bit of 5Live. No internet there.

At home, some of the above (with lots of BBC Sounds for various things, mostly documentaries & drama), and lots of podcasts.

With the World Service on a low burble overnight thanks to lifelong tinnitus (so low DH can’t hear it on the other side of the bed).

I stopped listening to Heart when they got rid of Ed, Troy and Paulina. IYKYK!

I miss him too. I love the Daily Grind podcast, but I can't listen to pure talk while I work, so I cook to it mostly.

SylviaStrong · 17/06/2024 07:08

Does anyone pay for the greatest hots radio subscription?

I am enjoying this station but the ads are annoying and am considering it.

This thread has got me out of my radio rut. Much needed.

PassingStranger · 17/06/2024 13:56

Nobody much talks about local radio.
Does anyone listen.
There have been alot of cuts to local radio in the last year.
The BBC vandalised local radio up and down the country.
They treated the staff who worked at local radio stations very badly.
There were no consultations done or anything and they haven't listened to presenters, listeners or even MPS.
If you are interested in discussing radio There is a good group on Facebook called Voices for Local Radio.

Radio 6 a little bit only because that's what do listens to

CallThatCloudy · 17/06/2024 14:08

GHR most of the day - suits me except here they employ a really annoying local newsreader who insists on pronouncing "hour" as "owwer".

R4 at bedtime, R2 weekends.

Mathsbabe · 17/06/2024 19:30

Radio 4 and Times Radio, getting into Podcasts and Alexa for music.

QuickDraining · 19/06/2024 22:02

@PassingStranger I have a soft spot for local radio and do miss it. I don't really get the point of radio stations these days when you can stream music relatively cheaply. So it's expert curation, live acts and lucky dips for me. I can't stand the news bulletins. And wish I could just ask the radio for news as and when I wanted to listen to it. At least local radio had some community function. The mindless dross of the music picks though.
