What radio station do you listen to ?

I feel a bit lost as can’t find a decent radio station to listen to any more.

Love R4 but finding it quite repetitive and dull and often hate the too long plays.

I am too old for R1.

R2 seems to have awful presenters now.

I miss Graham Norton at the weekends.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent station with good mix of music and talk ?

Five Live

Springwatch123 · 02/06/2024 11:57

Radio 2 - I like Vernon Jay, Scott Mills, Country show etc

Smooth Country - play a nice mix of country and folk music

Tried Greatest hits and didn’t like the adverts and the music they played.

StripedPiggy · 02/06/2024 12:01

Always R4 in the mornings. For all its faults, Today still sets the agenda in news & politics for the day. I then dip in & out of R4 depending on what’s on. I don’t listen to the plays or most of the alleged comedy, but I do enjoy More or Less, the science programmes etc.

I’m also listening to Times Radio more. Adam Boulton & Kate McCann on Sunday mornings are excellent. I sometimes listen to R2 & 6 Music, but I don’t listen to commercial music stations all of which are far too repetitive & the adverts are just intolerable.

Like others Times Radio, it is more like an audio version of the Guardian than the Times for a lot of the presenters and just reinforces that Murdoch management don’t actually listen to the audio content (cf the Bugle absolutely dismantling the Sun and News International back in the day). Radio 4 for comedy and long drives as I inevitably get sucked into some fascinating hour long documentary about sand, mushrooms or something else equally random.

For music generally Absolute or 6Music but love Liza on a Saturday evening while we make dinner.

I used to have the radio in my car set to Radio 2, but it's on Heart at the moment . At home I vary between Greatest Hits radio and the Heart/Smooth App where I move between the various decades Heart 70s/80s/90s and Smooth depending on the track being played . I don't listen that much though .

mondaytosunday · 02/06/2024 12:09

Radio 4
Heart 70s/80s
Chill
Jazz FM
Smooth Radio

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/06/2024 12:14

My husband has TalkSport on and I hate it - witter, witter, the same topic each day. And the worst thing about it being digital is that he even picks it up on holiday . It's a good job there are enough rooms in our house where we can each listen to our own choice .

frozendaisy · 02/06/2024 12:19

6music
Radio4 in week for news and comedy 5-7pm if in
BBC podcasts on subjects interesting or relevant
Spotify play lists if I am in the mood for a particular type of music

Personally I can't do opinion radio with callers because it's the same nonsense going round and around

JoanChitty · 02/06/2024 12:21

Radio london although I no longer live there. ( but only when Robert Elms is on ) Classic fm, GHR Ken Bruce, Planet Rock and R4. Also enjoy 4 extra.

lapochette · 02/06/2024 12:21

GHR if not that then Virgin. Used to listen to R2 all the time but it's went downhill

Justlovedogs · 02/06/2024 12:22

I don't listen much but I pick and choose Radio 2 presenters. If I want to listen to the radio when a disliked Radio 2 presenters is airing I go to Absolute 80s and sing along very badly.

Are you me? Ha, ha. I do pretty much the same (including the bad singing) but I throw in a bit of Greatest Hits as well, mainly Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo.

Jeezitneverends · 02/06/2024 12:26

Breakfast - Virgin
Morning -Greatest Hits
Lunchtime-2
Afternoon-usually Virgin
Teatime-2

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 02/06/2024 13:09

Absolute Radio

Imatorturedpoet · 02/06/2024 13:10

Greatest Hits Radio - they have lots of the old radio 2 presenters, play 80s, 70s and 90s music 😊

ladybirdsanchez · 02/06/2024 13:16

I only listen to the radio in the car and have set up a 'saved' list of my favourite stations so I can just flip through them when the adverts come on or they play a song I don't like!

I listen to R2, R4, R6 Music, Heart 70s/80s/90s/00s/Dance, Radio X, Absolute 80s/90s/00s/10s, Virgin, LBC, Times, Smooth Chill, Smooth Relax - it really depends what I'm in the mood for.

emmetgirl · 02/06/2024 13:18

Radio 5 or Radio 4 and podcasts.
Never listen to music radio.
It's not an age thing (I'm late 50s) as I've always disliked music radio.

TheThingIsYeah · 02/06/2024 13:24

Talk radio on on the background during the day. They pissed around with the lineups when they launched TalkTV and it never really worked - it lost its bite too. Now that Ian Collins is back on the 1pm slot I've found my happy place. He's my favourite - he can turn guest's silly arguments inside out and have them tied up in all sorts of knots over their hypocrisy. If I'm feeling masochistic I give JoB a go on LBC occasionally but he's so smug to callers it's off-putting - especially when they put genuine points across.

Sugarfish · 02/06/2024 13:29

Radio 1 even though I’m probably way past their demographic but I like listening to new music and I love Greg James’s breakfast show.

ZittiEBuoni · 02/06/2024 13:33

I'm die-hard Radio 3 but thanks for the FIP recommendation - that looks like something I would enjoy.

MarkWithaC · 02/06/2024 13:37

6Music. It's got a bit more 'youth' and dancey recently as they (I presume) try to attract a younger audience, and I don't love all the DJs, particularly Chris 'straight from local radio' Hawkins and Huw Stevens, but you still can't beat it for playing things that are just a little less mainstream.
They have some good guests, too, especially Lauren Laverne.

Perfectpots · 02/06/2024 13:45

I swap between radio 4, 4 extra, 5, 6, 2 and 3 depending on whats on.

Six music is great at times- particularly like Craig Charles, Cerys Matthews (has some pretty off the wall stuff on Sunday mornings)and Guy Garvey.

Radio 4 extra is also great at times if its reasonably modern era comedy (last 10-15 yrs) for example.

YesTonightJosephine · 02/06/2024 14:11

And I forgot BBC 4 Extra too!

I like to dip in every now and again.

Yes! More love for FIP RADIO please as it really is just fabulous!

You can choose your 'mood' ... DANCE, JAZZ, POP, GROOVE, REGGAE, METAL, HIP-HOP, ELECTRO, MONDE ... the list goes on!

Enjoy!

imfae · 02/06/2024 14:16

I like radio4 , but will switch off for some of the comedy segments which I dislike .Some are really good though . I like the news and discussions .

I also listen to radio 2 , but find this is very much dependent on the presenters . Not a fan of some of the newer ones and will switch off when they are on .I surprised myself as I actually do like Rylan most of the time . He can get quite gushy with some of his guests and his music is sometimes not necessarily what I would choose .

If neither has something I like I will check BBC sounds for earlier episodes I may have missed of desert island discs etc .
I do tend to avoid the commercial stations just because as others have said I can't bear the adverts .

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/06/2024 14:20

Absolute radio 80's... I have been known to sing along as I remember every word!

MarkWithaC · 02/06/2024 15:12

I'm going to try fip Radio; sounds great.
