I'd make salsa, slaw, garlic Mayo with zaatar, chilli sauce and potato salad to bring. I would also make birria tacos and bring that along too.

BlueJamSandwich · 19/05/2024 10:51

Greek salad

CurlewKate · 19/05/2024 10:52

A salad of romain lettuce, cooked peas Parmesan and balsamic dressing. Or for something more substantial, an Ottolenghi chickpea salad, like this one. ottolenghi.co.uk/recipes/miso-and-peanut-butter-chickpea-salad

It's so good.

One of my favourite salads is spinach, sliced pears, walnuts and then I make a blue cheese dressing which is basically blue cheese warmed in a pan with olive oil and add creme fraiche slowly until it becomes all gloopy.

I also really love ayjvar served with crudites. (It makes a great pasta sauce as well) For crudites I cut it with a bit of greek yoghurt. For pasta sauce i add single cream.

Potato bake - not sure if that's what you call it in UK. Love soaking up my steak/chop with the juices... Crusty buttered bread

Occasionally i'll do a cob loaf if tis someone i really like. Aussies love a cob

Stumbleine · 19/05/2024 11:06

Fennel gratin

TheMousePipes · 19/05/2024 11:07

I’m going to bring a sweetcorn and black bean salsa, roasted jersey mids slathered in butter and tomato and burrata bruschetta.

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 11:09

German style potato salad (with sour cream not mayo), homemade coleslaw, a green salad, mango and shallot salad with lemon thyme

merryandbrightdelight · 19/05/2024 11:10

RainbowZebraWarrior · 19/05/2024 10:05

Cauliflower cheese (in a large foil tray as it can be warmed though on the barbecue)

Goes well with steak, chicken and sausages.

Almost every 'side' dish people offer at barbecues is cold. It's nice to have a hot side dish.

Never thought of this! Delicious!

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 11:12

Oh and please don't add croutons to salads in advance, BBQs can be quite gluten intolerant (at least) friendly, even coeliac if sausages are gluten free (most supermarket ones are) and if sides include rice and potatoes don't bother with gf bread.

mitogoshi · 19/05/2024 11:15

@quizzys I use olive oil but I'm a fan, you can use any oil though. I drizzle the thick balsamic glaze partly to look good but also adds sweetness

Skethylita · 19/05/2024 11:18

A very light-feeling (but probably not actually that light!) salad from my home country that is perfect for BBQs, the perfect mix of sweet and savoury.

It contains leeks, celery, apples, pineapple, ham, egg, sweetcorn, creme fraiche and single cream and you need to make it at least a day in advance for the flavours to mix properly, but it's always incredibly well-received.

Marcipex · 19/05/2024 11:25

Greek salad

Batchelors savoury rice with peas added for the last couple of minutes cooking time

Blanketpolicy · 19/05/2024 11:25

A basic, but fresh, chopped salad with an Italian dressing.

Give me that along with some fresh homemade coleslaw (with light mayo dressing), buns/breads, a massive pile of grilled meat/peppers and several glasses of chilled Rosé and I am in BBQ heaven.

Elphame · 19/05/2024 11:27

Spicy potato salad made with natural yogurt. Fry up sone cumin, mustard and coriander seeds for a minute or two until they start to pop. Allow to cool. Chop a red and a green chilli fairly finely. Combine everything and chill

A potato salad of my homegrown veg + a SA friend’s recipe

I could eat a whole bowl of this + never miss burgers sausages or whatever’s on the bbq Grin

Is this the condensed milk one?

But sorry folks, being a South African I'm not having a BBQ of burgers and pork sausages.

I am happy to bring my own meat which is how it's done here. It's called a 'bring and braai' for a reason.

Sides are not ott either, probably a green salad of some sort, maybe a veg bake, potato bake. The idea is to make it as outdoor and minimal of too much fuss.

I would bring maize meal (known as pap) and tomato stew though.

Hatecleaninglovecleanhouse · 19/05/2024 11:42

Home-made Potato salad - skin on baby or salad potatoes, spring onions, chives and just enough dressing of half mayo and half natural yoghurt.

Home-made coleslaw, same dressing, roughly chopped white cabbage and ribbons of carrot made with a potato peeler instead of grated. Real crunch instead of a sloppy shop bought mess. Topped with toasted sesame seeds.

Lightly roasted peppers (all colours) and broccoli stalks cut into strips, with pumpkin or other seeds, and an olive oil/lemon juice/fresh herbs dressing

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/05/2024 11:43

Anything that's gluten free.

Roasted courgette chunks in olive oil and marjoram, olives, pickled chilli garlic, peppers, chargrilled artichokes, olives, still warm from the sun chunks of massive tomatoes in olive oil, garlic, sea salt, thyme, chilli and lemon juice/sumac, jagged pieces of little cucumbers, proper cheeses made from Ewes' and Goats' milk with herbs/sumac/more olives, watermelon, charred pineapple and thick Ewes' milk yoghurt with pomegranate molasses, yoghurt with walnuts and dates, lightly charred figs with yoghurt and molasses and thyme, GF flatbreads with sesame seeds and seasalt, charred and raw radishes (charred with the leaves & seed pods), a make-your-own charred fruit salad that includes lemon/lime/blood oranges and raw fruit, tabbouleh but with quinoa instead of cracked wheat and with proper quantities of herbs and olive oil, not homeopathic doses of them. Sweetcorn (cobs sliced into manageable pieces) with garlic chilli butter and/or mango chilli dressing and more sea salt.

I'd also be hoping for barbecued lamb or chicken (garlic, vinegar, sugar, lemon, chilli, herbs, olive oil) and possibly fish like GF whitebait, rather than sausages and burgers.

Reality is probably more sat with a tub of homemade coleslaw (shredded red cabbage, carrot, onion, sea salt, mayonnaise, splash of vinegar, pepper and left to marinate for a couple of days) and wishing the jacket potato hadn't been microwaved but had been sitting in the embers of a barbecue for hours to go all fluffy and crispy.

justjudy · 19/05/2024 11:44

Potato salad with chopped spring onions.

Mixed leaves with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, red onion and pomegranate seeds

DuploTrain · 19/05/2024 11:47

I can’t believe that halloumi hasn’t been mentioned yet.
Nice thick slices done on the bbq, or on a skewer with peppers, courgettes and onions if you insist on some veg.

Moier · 19/05/2024 11:48

Feta salad with walnuts.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/05/2024 11:49

RainbowZebraWarrior · 19/05/2024 10:21

onion, mature red cheddar and mayo (trust me)

That's basically cheese savoury. Most people love cheese savoury.

I love this as a sandwich filling or in a baked potato but can't imagine as a side to a BBQ.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 19/05/2024 11:49

Mini roast potatoes (skin on, lovely & crisp) with zaziki.
Simple yet so irresponsible! 😋
