Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

If our livelihoods depended on us looking fab all the time, it'd be easy to do it.

Likewise if you knew you'd be photographed often and splashed all over the press, it'd be easy to do it too.

When I say easy, I don't mean "easy" though...I mean the discipline required would come easier.

TheTypewriter · 05/05/2024 16:38

I guess if you can afford a chef, a personal trainer and the time to devote to working out and beauty regimes then that makes it easier to sustain. I mean, if your full-time job was your body and you had all the resources available to keep it in tip-top shape then yeah, you could stay thin even if that wasn't your natural tendency!

Bananadramallamas · 05/05/2024 16:42

Well food is so expensive these days if you hardly ate much you would be thinner and richer.
I don't think they actually eat at these events either, probs just push it around the plate and fill up on champagne.
I think I read something about Geri Horner not eating sugar ever, which keeps her slim.

BoobyDazzler · 05/05/2024 16:43

I think a lot of them do quite a lot of cocaine.

Bananadramallamas · 05/05/2024 16:44

Mmmmm, yes, the coke would do that, too. 🤔

Fizbosshoes · 05/05/2024 16:46

Geri Horner is formerly bulimic
She'll obviously be super careful /restrictive about what she eats
I imagine lots of women in the public eye have borderline (or full blown) eating disorders

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 05/05/2024 16:46

They do the Victoria Beckham 'diet' of steamed fish & steamed veg.

Ticktapticktap · 05/05/2024 16:47

Cocaine and eating disorders

BobnLen · 05/05/2024 16:51

Princess Beatrice looks normal size like she always has, it's the ones that were fatter and now stick thin that probably don't eat much, most people are not thinner at 40-50 than they were at 20.

blacksax · 05/05/2024 16:51

Perhaps they don't want to be slagged off in the media.

Hairybittercress89 · 05/05/2024 16:55

I have one old very “rich and thin” university friend who visits from the USA from time to time. She’s actually a really lovely person so I don’t hold it against her 😀😀

I’ve noticed that she very skilfully “nibbles” so if say salmon is the main dish then she will eat a few mouthfuls of that and then hides everything else under a lettuce leaf.

For me and my other friends, eating out is a bit of a treat, so we tuck in and enjoy our food, and have a starter and maybe a pudding too. But because her life is all smart lunches and cocktail parties, for my US friend, eating out is nothing special, so she “grazes lightly” at every event as there is always the next one coming up that evening or the next day.

Yes, and this. Is probably be much thinner if I were in the public eye. The media, and other humans in general can be absolutely vile when it comes to weight.

Cosycover · 05/05/2024 16:56

Probably alot of cocaine and starvation.

No about of money could make up for the misery I'd be in if all I ate was steamed veg and fish.

User14March · 05/05/2024 17:23

@Hairybittercress89 I guess if as normal to a service station sandwich as rest of us the allure of (over) indulging might wear off after a bit. Glad friend lovely, :), doesn’t surprise me.

Princess Beatrice is young and looks pretty normal? Definitely not overly skinny anyway.

Most of my friends look like her and generally eat healthy ish in the week, enjoy going out for dinner and hit the gym a couple of times a week. (We’re all early 30s so it’s not that hard at this age!)

Pollipops1 · 05/05/2024 17:41

Because the absolute worst thing to be in high society is fat. Drugs or alcohol dependency is absolutely fine, I reckon even murder is considered more forgivable!

Pollipops1 · 05/05/2024 17:42

I used to work in fashion with lots of posh girls, many just didn’t eat.

I have seen her in person a few times most recently earlier this year (so post baby). She is probably a size 8 if that. Eugenie looked slightly “bigger” but she also wore an unflattering dress.

SuuzeeeQ · 05/05/2024 17:44

A lot of skinny people don’t eat a lot. My SIL (3 pregnancies and mid 40ies) is skinny, but had an ED and eats very little and mostly salad and does A LOT of sports (daily 1-2 hour runs etc).

MsLuxLisbon · 05/05/2024 17:49

Princess Beatrice is not 'thin'.

User14March · 05/05/2024 17:53

@MsLuxLisbon I think she’s currently about a UK6. She’s def lost weight. Like what she’s been wearing lately.

@Pollipops1 why do you think this is? Is it simply harder to pull off fab designer stuff at your disposal?

I’m pretty thin, but definitely not rich. I’ve always been thin, and I’m now in my late 50s. It’s just my natural weight. I’ve never been on a diet or had an eating disorder, or been to a gym.

PauliesWalnuts · 05/05/2024 18:02

I remember being at a sports award do a few years back, maybe 10 years ago - David and Victoria Beckham were on the table next to us. We had a three course meal. She ate the starter (mini quiche thing) and that was it. She disappeared for the next two courses (someone said she was smoking outside) and came back when the awards were being given out.

Chausson · 05/05/2024 18:05

My 60 year old friend is still teeny like a teenager before they have filled out she eats very little. I am certainly slim but when I stayed with her for a week last year it became apparent she eats very little. She denies herself nothing specifically but portions are small, this was a lunch. A small stack of ritz crackers, maybe 4 about 6 grapes a very small piece of cheese, a matchbox size and a small slice of ham. It’s the sort of thing I used to give to toddler DS. She is a UK size 4.
