Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

@ManchesterBeatrice what sort of Cunt calls a woman chunky anyway?

SuuzeeeQ · 05/05/2024 19:22

@User14March frankly it’s sort of rare to meet an UHWN man over 50ish who is still with his first wife…

User14March · 05/05/2024 19:25

@SuuzeeeQ sad but unsurprising. I knew of a wonderful couple, self made who adored each other in this category but as you say I imagine vanishingly rare.

Because slimness is the desired look and the sort of woman who have obtained these positions in society tend to be quite driven and used to working hard to get what they want, the same drive and will power will be applied to body shape.

because if you are wealthy, you can give yourself a “treat” of a beauticians visit or another handbag, or a weekend in a posh spa, or a new dress - you don’t need your “treats” to be as cheap as a chocolate bar (or two).

because sample clothes only come in small sizes, if you want to wear the most recent (not yet in the shops) fashion, you need to be slim enough to get it in, and that’s a good incentive.

because if you are used to someone else cooking for you, it’s less of an event to eat out at a posh dinner, and the aim is usually to spend a couple of hours talking to the people around you, not eating.

because the quality and taste of the food is the primary thing, not the quantity.

because if you are surrounded by people who aren’t snacking or eating a lot, you tend to eat less.

A big part of it is genetics - good looking slim woman marries a rich (usually good looking) man and they have children.

I went to a university that had a significant proportion of very wealthy students from ‘top’ private schools. Around 90% of the women were tall, blond and slim. I really struggled to tell them apart sometimes.

20 years on, looking at their social media they’ve married rich men and have produced the next generation of tall, slim blond kids. And so the cycle continues.

Pollipops1 · 05/05/2024 20:12

Ime a lot of rich men aren’t not good looking facially.

User14March · 05/05/2024 20:38

@Pollipops1 but wives make up for it, :), I think you mean re: cliche UHNW, thinking Harvey W etc. At public schools often it’s the lofty ‘Felix’ in Saltburn types who have great genes & looks but usually not the UHNW £. More HNW.

Princess Beatrice looks normal size like she always has, it's the ones that were fatter and now stick thin that probably don't eat much, most people are not thinner at 40-50 than they were at 20.

Beatrice is significantly thinner than she used to be. She's only become very slim since her wedding.

whatisheupto · 05/05/2024 20:46

Totally agree with this. My posh friends think nothing of eating out and have several lunches/ dinner parties/ restaurant meals a week, then frequent holidays with endless eating out. So whereas I get very excited at the prospect of eating out and don't hold back, it is easy for them to nibble on only the protein and veg. They know the next posh meal is only hours away.
Honestly, if I could have beautifully cooked lean meat and veg every meal I'd be 10 kilos lighter!

They do the Victoria Beckham 'diet' of steamed fish & steamed veg.

This. Huge ,fully equipped gym at home, personal trainer. They are invited to things because they are rich and thin. If they got fat their husband would trade them in for someone younger and slim.Theyll be in all the society pages if they look right. Look wrong and it's social death.

I have an elderly neighbour who smokes continously throughout the day, it's a wonder she has time to do anything else. You guessed it - she's incredibly thin.

Heatherbell1978 · 05/05/2024 21:00

I had an eating disorder in my late teens and early 20s. I weighed between 6.5 and 7.5 stone for about 4 years. In a nutshell I consumed far fewer calories than I burned off. Exercised loads, ate bugger all. To be honest it isn't rocket science although my life was miserable.

I could win the euro millions tomorrow and at no point would I think, 'Do you know what would make this better...giving up cake, and crumpets and fish and chips'. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

Thank the Gods, someone else out there like myself 😂

Chocolatefreak · 05/05/2024 21:08

If you eat healthily and very little alcohol and sugar you don't have to starve yourself to be thin. Exercise and you can eat three meals a day plus occasional treats. It doesn't even have to be loads of exercise. My commute by electric bike is 40 mins each way during the week and I exercise at the weekends too.

Pollipops1 · 05/05/2024 21:10

I would argue there’s a different between thin & celebrity/rich thin. Most of them will have very low BMIs which is not been maintained past 40 by restricting only sugar.

Healthy food isn't cheap

Discussing Victoria Beckham in this context makes me a little uncomfortable- she’s talked about having sensory issues around food, her restrictive diet isn’t based on Will power, but having really quite distressing issues around what foods she can eat.

David Beckham has talked about feeling sad he can’t share the experiences of things like great steak with her, but she just can’t cope with the idea of eating them, it’s not will power or a diet.

there are probably others who do eat a similar diet the rest of the time out of a desire to be thin, it’s not the same when someone has mental health issues.

Chocolatefreak · 05/05/2024 21:22

wintersgold · 05/05/2024 21:13

I agree - supermarkets promote the ultra highly processed food - that's cheap. However you can eat things with lots of beans and lentils in - that makes things a lot cheaper. Cooking as a vegetarian is a lot cheaper than buying meat.

IntoTheMild · 05/05/2024 21:26

I imagine it’s a mix of the constant pressure from the media to stay slim, peer pressure, and eating disorders.

When not pregnant or breastfeeding, I maintain a size 6/8 by having a coffee/tea and protein shake for breakfast, skipping lunch/maybe or a small piece of fruit, and eating whatever I want for dinner that’s around 750 calories, sometimes this may just be a dessert because I prefer it. I’ll take multiple vitamins too.

7175McGee · 05/05/2024 21:27

They're all on Ozempic and they just don't eat. They live off vitamin pills, Diet Coke, actual coke and cigarettes. Plus they have personal trainers and work out every day. It is not at all normal to be as rail thin as most celebrities in the public eye are.

Does anyone follow Demi Moore's daughter Talullah Willis on Instagram? For years she was 'celebrity thin' because she had a raging ED. She's recently been in treatment and now in all her pics her body looks healthy and normal.
