Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

A lot of skinny people don’t eat a lot. My SIL (3 pregnancies and mid 40ies) is skinny, but had an ED and eats very little and mostly salad and does A LOT of sports (daily 1-2 hour runs etc).

I wouldn't say she HAD an ED if this is her lifestyle. She HAS one.

Healthy food isn't cheap

It’s pretty cheap. Vegetables, beans, lentils make up most of our food. Plus pasta and rice. No alcohol, no meat, no dairy - they’re the expensive things. Fruit can be a bit pricey if it’s out of season but that’s about it.

OneBadKitty · 05/05/2024 21:51

I don't think it has anything to do with time, chefs, personal trainers etc. It's about willpower! When you know you will be scrutinised by the press etc. then it's going to be a great motivation to avoid the biscuit barrel. Because in my world, the more free time I have, the more I eat!

Bumblebee907 · 05/05/2024 22:03

Cocaine and eating disorders comment nails it! 💅

Also couture. When your clothes are tailored to fit your body, including any quirky bits, it makes a huge difference to how you look. Perfectly fitting clothes elevates your look. You can get your RTW altered to fit properly and it will look so much better than straight off the shop floor.

I think its in reverse, these people wouldn't be rich if they were not thin. Beautiful successful people always seem to fall into the category of undereating when stressed as opposed to overeating. Using Geri as an example, her solo career only kicked off briefly when she was grossly underweight. No way would she have had success of she had gained 20 lbs. Now that i think of it I can't think of anyone successful beautiful type who is inclined to gain weight occasionally or carries a bit extra.all the time. Unless you are a fat woman of course and get fat woman acting roles playing the supportive best friend or the comedy characters.

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong you reminded me of Kate Winslet. She famously said she was told she’d only ever get the ‘fat girl’ roles. Crazy.

I’m skinny. 43, peri-menopausal, definitely got a bit more curve to me than I used to but still a size 8. And, from a working (mum), middle (dad) class background. Some people are just skinny, despite what they eat (& I eat like a horse. Bloody love my food!). My kids are the same.

The responses on this thread are quite spiteful. Look at pictures of women from 30, 40, 50 years ago. I bet none the women mentioned here are as slim as an average woman was then. Overeating is entrenched in our society to the degree we've forgotten what normal bodies look like. My mum's weight never changed throughout her life - and she'd had 6 children. My grandmother was the same. Wealthy women can afford nutritionally rich food and good advice. No cravings for crap If your food is nutritionally rich. The problem isn't them, it's us and the empty, sugary crap.

I think we have to ask how we got a situation where a) wealthy women can afford good food and good advice whilst the rest of us can't, and b) somehow the rest of us are to blame for that.

Secrets From The Eating Lab begs to differ on the effectiveness of willpower.

Geri Halliwell has always been very open about her eating disorder...

But these days everyone is on the weightloss injections, anyone can get them.

TeaGinandFags · 06/05/2024 00:19

When I worked in posh London restaurants, slim middle aged women would ask for things like sparkling water, black tea, egg white omelette, steamed fish fillet, no salad dressing, no carbs, no dairy, no booze, no pudding.

No bloody point!

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 06/05/2024 00:33

Fgs it's not disciplined or a big secret to be thin, it's excessive!!

Too many people think 'thin' is desirable, whereas being 'fit and healthy' should be desirable and being fit usually looks bigger than the Hollywood icons we see.

I am fit and a size 10 and very disciplined but I don't starve myself as that's not healthy.

The secret to super thin celebs is starvation.

Deadringer · 06/05/2024 00:33

A girl I used to work with often boasted about how she ate chocolate and crisps every day, she was very slim. She would open a bag of crisps and eat just a few crisps, maybe a quarter of the bag, then she would have a square or two of chocolate. That's all she ate all day. In general slim people eat less, there is no way around it.

mondaytosunday · 06/05/2024 00:34

They are very disciplined. My cousin is an ex model and she eats out all the time. But she gets a starter and eats it as her main, doesn't eat breakfast and has a light lunch. In fact I don't know how she's standing.

Catterbat · 06/05/2024 00:37

Fuck knows. I’ve only ever been thin when I’ve been poor. If you gave me a million quid tomorrow I’d be 70 stone by next Tuesday.

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 06/05/2024 00:40

IntoTheMild · 05/05/2024 21:26

I imagine it’s a mix of the constant pressure from the media to stay slim, peer pressure, and eating disorders.

When not pregnant or breastfeeding, I maintain a size 6/8 by having a coffee/tea and protein shake for breakfast, skipping lunch/maybe or a small piece of fruit, and eating whatever I want for dinner that’s around 750 calories, sometimes this may just be a dessert because I prefer it. I’ll take multiple vitamins too.

That sounds extremely unhealthy, that's roughly only 1000 calories a day.

I would feel very weak eating just that.

I have one old very “rich and thin” university friend who visits from the USA from time to time. She’s actually a really lovely person so I don’t hold it against her 😀😀

I’ve noticed that she very skilfully “nibbles” so if say salmon is the main dish then she will eat a few mouthfuls of that and then hides everything else under a lettuce leaf.

For me and my other friends, eating out is a bit of a treat, so we tuck in and enjoy our food, and have a starter and maybe a pudding too. But because her life is all smart lunches and cocktail parties, for my US friend, eating out is nothing special, so she “grazes lightly” at every event as there is always the next one coming up that evening or the next day.

Edited

that’s an eating disorder, speaking as someone who has done this

BusterGonad · 06/05/2024 01:59

Has anyone claiming that P Beatrice isn't thin actually bothered to take a few seconds out to Google an up to date photo of her? She has quite clearly lost a lot of weight, just by looking at a facial photo you can see that. And to the person calling her chunky, No1 what a bitch and No2 do your research.

BoobyDazzler · 06/05/2024 02:09

PB has had quite a lot on her plate over the last few years due to the issues with her dad so she’s probably stressed to fuck
and think all eyes are on her. She does look like a woman who’s lost too much weight though.

Lostsadandconfused · 06/05/2024 02:28

Google richest women in the world, those who have their own wealth, inherited or earned, vs those who married rich.

You'll find quite a few with larger body types.

So it's not intrinsically linked to just having wealth.

This is the richest woman in Australia, Gina Rinehart.

Some people just aren’t that into goof though. They eat when they’re hungry and that’s it.

LipstickedPowderedAndPainted · 06/05/2024 03:00

I'm thin but also tall. People are always having a go at me about "not eating"," not having enough meat in me" , "starving yourself". It's simply not true.
I'm not motivated by food, yet are some things I like ( really sweet tooth and go through bags of jelly sweets at lightning speed) but essentially did isn't sommering in interested in overall and my preferences are for things like salad and fruit, it's just my personal taste. For me the idea of a three course meal or tasting menu is really unpleasant, if far rather pick throughout the day, a bit here and a bit there when the fancy takes. It's easier to do if you aren't tied to a job where you must have breaks at set times etc.
There are some things which naturally do predetermine your size, but having a flexibility of lifestyle ( that comes with money)means you can just accomodate it better. Being able to pay for the nicest fruits abs veg as opposed to the unripe or in fun stuff means you can chose something trait delicious easily that's less fattening and more nutritious. Having time and easy access to a nice gym or whatever and a pt who turns up to make you exercise has-been to make it much easier to be slimmer and certainly look better though. Realistically these pepole know that as soon as they put in a few pounds they'll be pulled apart by Gossip press and probably don't want to hurt their brand image so it's worth maintaining a thinner body for ease of it.
