Being rich & thin

User14March · 05/05/2024 16:29

Why are all the women in the smart, rich set thin enough for couture? Reading mag with ‘society pages’. Princess Beatrice in their ranks. Geri Halliwell etc. They always seem to be at lunches & dinners, parties, yet no one is even a UK size 10. What’s the secret or are they all far better disciplined than most?

In those groups, it is considered slovenly to not be thin. So they just don’t eat, often exercise obsessively and there is also the cocaine use for some of them.

It is the peer pressure. At that level you are usually “on display” next to your husband, you don’t work or have academic achievements, the only praise you will receive will be for being thin, well turned out, etc.

She looks gaunt and unhealthy here. This should be setting off alarm bells.

JaneAustenshandbag · 05/05/2024 18:36

I’d rather have booze, cake, bread and be a bit plump. I’ve a pretty face. Who cares!

B0G0F · 05/05/2024 18:37

I know a family. The parents are short and rotund. The children are taller but one of them has always been slim. Even as a small child was very active and ate healthily, while the siblings were like the parents.

My slim cousin has always been slim. His parents are slim. His wife is slim. His DC are slim. He never eats between meals and AFAIK never has. Always been sporty. His wife and DC are sporty. They are also attractive and really nice.

AnnaMagnani · 05/05/2024 18:38

They come from families where women being thin is very highly prized and a large part of their self worth.

When I worked in healthcare in an area with a lot of these families, I found orthorexia was normal and outright eating disorders common.

@MsLuxLisbon I think she’s currently about a UK6. She’s def lost weight. Like what she’s been wearing lately.

Suddenly she’s slim after years of battling her weight - I should think it’s much more to do with weight loss drugs.

User14March · 05/05/2024 18:39

@GreatSquareNova interesting, but some are in the art world, (as one example) educated, smart, cultured & witty. Interesting that being thin if very social trumps that?

Maybe because they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They are ‘skinny’ so let’s speculate on why and suggest eating disorders and drugs but we can’t compliment Beatrice as she is <hushed tones> ‘normal’.

ManchesterBeatrice · 05/05/2024 18:40

P. Beatrice is not thin, she's fairly chunky!!

Very rich people have access to better food. Chefs. No processed food all that kind of stuff

wgole organic fruit and veg.

there’s massive aspects behind it.

Heroin and/ or Coke.

When I lived among the 'smart set', they all drank Diet Coke in the pubs/ bars and snorted Coke in the toilets. That was in the 90s.

it’s really normal, the vast majority of my friends have some form of disordered eating &/or exercise a load. I escaped much of it as didn’t have to consider what I ate till my mid 30s and my height helps.

gindreams · 05/05/2024 18:49

I saw Princess Beatrice recently she looked slim but not unhealthily so

JungleJimmy · 05/05/2024 18:49

This seems quite a bitchy discussion.

Would you talk the same way about the size of "poor" women?

In my experience, rich women come in all shapes and sizes. But the slimmer ones tend to have good genetics; Daddy married a supermodel-type and their children are tall and slim like their mum.

As a size 6-8, menopausal woman, I'm probably smaller than some of the women you're talking about, but I eat pizza and cake, drink alcohol, clear my plate in a restaurant and everything else that other women do. However, I also walk 10k+ steps a day (have a big dog), run some days and go to the gym 3-4 times a week.

I'm naturally quite slender, but I also exercise more/ eat a bit less if I find my clothes getting a bit tight.

It pisses me off when people bitch about the fact that I probably survive on a lettuce leaf a day or do drugs or some such nonsense, because I think women especially should be complementary about ALL body shapes; we get enough shit from the men about what we should/shouldn't look like 🙄

LeopardsRockingham · 05/05/2024 18:49

In the magazine pics linked there is no way you could call Princess Bea chunky.

She has lost a lot of weight, you can see it in her eyes and neck.

Probably chunky to MN but going by different weights I've been I'd put her BMI at around 17 which isn't healthy.

SuuzeeeQ · 05/05/2024 18:53

“In my experience, rich women come in all shapes and sizes.”

not in mine. I work with very rich people in my job and they are all skinny. They constantly holiday in warm places and on yachts, there is a lot of pressure to look good and be skinny.

Buts it ok to acknowledge that a lot of women do restrict their eating & to acknowledge there is pressure to do so. I used to model, many models I worked with very much restricted their eating. I did myself by default as sometimes there was no food available & even then was considered too big at points because I had proportionally large breasts for my frame.

User14March · 05/05/2024 18:58

@SuuzeeeQ very rich women, those married to billionaires with yachts etc, sure. Ultra High Net worth, that set I think usually very slim. Rich as in 6 figure salaries I imagine less rarified & all shapes & sizes. What’s’rich’? I think it’s interesting that most seemingly conform to the norm if ‘become’ UHNW (?)

@Pollipops1 yes, my beautiful 6ft friend was on course to hit the big time in modelling world, she was told to go from 9 stone to 7.5 /8 she told them to stick it. Some years ago.

Mumsnet isn't exactly known for being kind to celebrities either, is it?!

MN also has a high proportion of competitive undereaters and people with EDs

There are lots of people who are naturally slim and size 6 or whatever. There are even more people (celebrity or otherwise) who are not but strictly control what they eat/exercise to get to a bmi under 20.

I don’t think 6 figure salaries is rich.

UHNW men tend to marry skinny and beautiful women, and women from wealthy families (Next Gens) grow up sporty (horse raiding, sailing, swimming, skiing) and go to private schools and boarding schools that encourage sports. My ex boss went to boarding school in switzerland where in the winter everyone did 2 hours of skiing before school.

Flippin' eck, if that's your definition of chunky I dread to imagine what your idea of slender is.
