Surely this is just human nature or has everyone become unkind

Went to see challenges at the cinema it’s obviously a longish film over two hours. Once it had finished there was a massive queue for the toilets as I think another film ended around the same time. A young woman entered the toilet clearly overtly desperate for a wee legs crossed etc. I said the poor girl could obviously go in front of me only for the woman behind me to get very cross with me. Surely it’s just human nature if you see someone more in need you help? Like if someone was starving hungry I would give them my food even if I was also hungry.

If you wanted to give up your place in the queue to her, that is one thing, but making every single person behind you take a step back, that was not an act of kindness, that was an act of selfishness

LBFseBrom · 05/05/2024 13:42

I would have done the same if I was not as desperate. Some people just don't care about others.

cranberrypi · 05/05/2024 13:42

you are not entitled to let someone in in front of you at all. You ARE entitled to give up your place to her, and go to the back yourself

give up your place to her? or take it upon yourself to hold up every single person behind you by letting her in in front of you? You cant make that decision for the rest of the queue

StuffLoriThangs · 05/05/2024 13:48

I was listening to a podcast about rudeness in London, specifically. But they did say that people were ruder in general.

We’ve went from being civilly oblivious of others to uncivilly discourteous of others. “Main character energy” was mentioned. Covid was a presiding factor as well, particularly with how our government handled it and how we treated each other.

I think we can just keep looking for ways to be kind but also not be mugged off ourselves

Eggmoobean · 05/05/2024 13:57

You did not give her your space, you made the queue longer for everyone else ! If I was busting for a wee and behind you I would not have been happy

takemeawayagain · 05/05/2024 14:07

So there was a massive queue, people at the back might have been desperate - but you let someone cut in front of all of them? If you gave her your space that would have been kind. Instead you just made all the people at the back wait even longer.

WallaceinAnderland · 05/05/2024 14:12

Why didn't you go to the back of the queue OP?

Stickortwister · 05/05/2024 14:14

Yep I'm with you.

I would have hoped others would feel the same but this thread shows otherwise.

As I getting older I'm coming to the realisation that most people are at heart very selfish. Sad isn't it?

The OP was at liberty to inconvenience herself and not everyone else by giving the desperate woman her place and going to the back. Big difference between doing something nice yourself and expecting everyone else to give their breakfast to the Hummells.

This. It's not only your space you're giving up.

Stickortwister · 05/05/2024 14:17

I wonder how old the people are who saying they think it's unfair on others in the queue..... Seems to be a thing in last 20 years or so. I'm sure that when I was younger people with buggies and the elderly were allowed to skip the bus /toilet queue..... (I'm aware now that would be considered rude/entitled). Anything else would have been considered very bad manners.

I would have done the same @Lovetoshop778 bit stunned others might not have to be honest. But then yesterday was on the tube with my DCs and was horrified when someone pushed one of the out of the way. So I think there is generally a lack of tolerance and kindness at the moment. People too stressed, too busy and struggling themselves I suspect.

fuckssaaaaake · 05/05/2024 14:21

I would have done the same. I know some cafes don't let people use the toilet but I always say yes as we can all get caught out beefing the loo, especially after babies etc

RaininSummer · 05/05/2024 14:24

You don't know that the people behind weren't also desperate so i agree that you should have swapped places with her if feeling kind.

Lovetoshop778 · 05/05/2024 14:32

I did look around and no one looked as uncomfortable as this poor girl happy scrolling on their phones. Me giving her my place meant people were one back in the queue she would have been behind about 20 people as well would I and I needed to go badly to.

Lovetoshop778 · 05/05/2024 14:32

I just thought she need more in need then me hence I let her go and out her needs over mine.

I find people generally selfish and self-centered, seems to be getting worse. Older people in particular, 60+.

Change2banon · 05/05/2024 14:40

Excellent thanks OP, I now know how to queue jump for no reason whatsoever, my acting skills are great 🤪

DarkForces · 05/05/2024 14:48

It's hardly the milk of human kindness to make every one wait longer and expect praise for doing so

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 05/05/2024 15:00

My 4 yr old had to go on a flight just as seat belt signs came on so she had to wait. We were ages landing and disembarking then had to get a bus to the airport so by the time we met the first toilets she was desperate and there was a long queue. I kept saying its OK keep holding it won't be long, we were speaking loud enough for everyone to hear and not one person let her skip. It's years ago now but to this day I wish she had piddled all over the floor and they had all slipped in it. YANBU OP I think you meant well

Thing is, OP let the person making the biggest song and dance about needing a wee cut in. There could have been others who were also very desperate waiting, who then had to wait even longer.

Or besides DESPERATELY needing a wee, others could have needed to go (not desperately) but also need to get back to their car before parking runs out, or get back to their children being looked after, or catch a bus, etc.

WallaceinAnderland · 05/05/2024 14:12

Why didn't you go to the back of the queue OP?

Exactly. That would have been giving the apparently desperate woman her space in the queue.

Lovetoshop778 · 05/05/2024 15:13

I understand your points but I don’t think someone would embarrass themselves looking as she did to skip a queue unless in genuine need. She also didn’t ask to skip I offered her to and she was very grateful and polite to me.

I’ve said I needed to go badly to. If I had gone to the back of the queue I would have been behind one person as a-posed to someone being one behind it’s a big difference.
