Hey @JessS1990 don't forget the delightful IDS!

JessS1990 · 07/05/2024 11:41

To they have any one of the quality of William Hague or Michael Howard left in the party?

Hopefully yes they have, preferably a series of them...... those pair were a stunning success and helped make the Tories very electable in a few limited areas of the UK.

Sunak of course was considered on the right of the Tory party, that he is now seen as more moderate goes to show how far the 'party has moved to the extremes, not helped by employing right winger Australians, we've enough them on MN 😂

Until the Tories rid themselves of the ERG types, they'll never return to "one nation" Conservatism.

Agree. It seems a pointless exercise to me.

Yep, but I like it cause it's funny.Grin

It is very odd trying to have a debate with someone who thinks that their feelings are facts.

I'm seeing this more and more just in general life. People are so tribal. Such a lack of nuance and discussion.

I think the next thread title should be Sunak: Hung parliament and Rishful thinking.

To be fair he did resign as Work and Pensions secretary because even he couldn't stomach the cruelty (so he said)

@SerendipityJane Didn't stop Ian Duncan Smith telling the then Pensions minister Baroness Ros Altmann not to engage with the Waspi women as they "would go away sooner or later."
What a cold, unfeeling, out of touch person.

Why in all honesty do women have to "Do it all " just for unequal pay ( back in those days, not being in a company pension scheme, not being allowed a mortgage unless a man signed the form , work part time so you can do all the childcare etc etc etc. )
Most often it is the women who give up a massive part of their life to care for others. ( Not exclusively I know, many lovely men out there.)
I have just read a post on the Waspi f/b page which would honestly break your heart.

Another sign of the decline of the justice system - Prisoners to be released 70 days early because of prison overcrowding. Includes domestic violence abusers and burglarss.
Its the second time the Government has issued these directions.

"Nicole Jacobs, the domestic abuse commissioner, warned at that time that the early release scheme would risk putting victims of domestic abuse in danger.

She pointed out that perpetrators of domestic abuse are often repeat offenders and their sentences frequently do not reflect the severity of harm and the risk they pose.

Charlie Taylor, the chief inspector of prisons, also warned that violent prisoners who could be a risk to the public were being released early under the scheme. He told Times Radio that he was concerned about the lack of preparation for prisoners being freed early to ensure they fitted back into society without reoffending."

Sunak should stay off the Mexican sugar.

https://www.politicshome.com/news/article/rishi-sunak-local-election-results-tory-party-morale-downing-street-session-levido

As per @katyballs, Sunak tomorrow and next week will host Tory MPs for local elections / strategy presentations in Downing St

But will they be persuaded by what PolHome is told will essentially be a "keep calm and carry on" message from the PM & Levido?

Today Sunak's team was drawing up a spreadsheet of Conservative MPs who plan to attend the two strategy sessions in No 10

They're being urged to stay "optimistic" and keep faith in the plan

But some despondent Tories intend to skip. "What's the point?" said one ex-minister

It's so easy though isn't it? Someone else can do the thinking for you. And you can be part of a group. Cool. 🙌🏻 Hmm

If they believed in the plan more it would be working even better. That’s their problem they just aren’t believing hard enough.

Zonder · 07/05/2024 18:19

And what happened to the VONC from the LDs today? I believed it because it was Pippa Crerar who posted about it.
