@cakeorwine I posted in jest last week about Rwandan's coming for a free flight home, but that does seem to be a bit much more spendy, to keep them here because for them their country isn't safe, but for everyone else it is... I wonder if the gen pop of Rwanda knows they are possibly the best country to claim asylum here atm?

NEW: Lib Dem leader Ed Davey to table motion of no confidence in government when Parliament returns tomorrow, in bid to force June general election.

(Bit of a stunt as, even if Labour & SNP back such a vote, the Tories still have a big majority.)

The replies to that tweet are highly entertaining.

The replies to that tweet are highly entertaining.

Particularly, where the presenter Justin Webb patiently tries to explain to whoever the Minister is that the projection from the local elections isn't the basis to make a prediction for a GE.

John Swinney elected as new SNP leader

What happened to the bloke who was thinking of standing yesterday?

mibbelucieachwell · 06/05/2024 13:45

@Zonder He decided against it after a meeting with John Swinney.

Apparently he has been campaigning for a change to council tax and favours a land tax instead. (Vast swathes of Scotland are owned by a few private individuals)

prettybird · 06/05/2024 13:45

He withdrew his candidacy yesterday "following talks with Swinney", although he said that he had the signatures from the required minimum of 20 constituency associations.

He was never a viable candidate anyway Confusedas he's not even currently an MSP, so there would have had to be a separate election within Holyrood for the First Minister position - even if he had won the vote within the SNP membership which he wouldn't have done Hmm

mibbelucieachwell · 06/05/2024 13:50

I have a solution to the small boats problem. I suspect it won't be popular tho.

How about if we ask France to become part of France?

This would have so many benefits. Militarily, strategically, no need for small boats. Economy of scale. Membership of the EU. King Charles could become family Mayor of Britain and NI.

I dare Laura to suggest this to Rishi .Grin

VONC - time for Dame Jenkins and friends to put their money where their mouth is isn't it?

cakeorwine · 06/05/2024 12:13

So:

An asylum seeker is sent from the UK to Rwanda
They get Rwandan ID
They could then flee Rwanda and get back to the UK.
They can't be sent to Rwanda as they have Rwandan ID and people with Rwandan ID can't be sent to Rwanda as the law states that people with Rwandan ID can't be sent to Rwanda as it's unsafe for people with Rwandan ID?

Is that correct?

That does appear to have been written into the bill. I can see how it happened. It’s what happens when you write bad law and it doesn’t get scrutinised properly.

The downside is you aren’t then eligible for another 3k voluntary resettlement. Because I don’t think you can claim that if you are Rwandan.

mibbelucieachwell · 06/05/2024 13:52

Ochttttt! I don't know where 'family' mayor came from. Hope this slip doesn't result in my idea failing to gain traction Grin

I’m happy for them to invade if our government don’t agree.

Chefs kiss.

Even I - probably more anti monarchist than Willy Hamilton - thought my neighbour was chopping onions at the clip of the Queen alone. I have serious doubts about any "conservative" who let that pass. And the fact they did (and silenced those that didn't) speaks volumes.

I also saw Gasping!

I most remember Bernard Hill playing David Blunkett in A Very Social Secretary.

Did anyone see this from BBC News app by Sir John Curtice?:/

Do local election results point to a hung Parliament? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68964302

Meanwhile, in other news that didn't happen ... (I'm too scaredy to post in FWR, but someone should tell them)

Betteridges law applies.

medianewbie · 06/05/2024 20:21

John Swinney though! 🤦‍♀️

DuncinToffee · 06/05/2024 20:25

Those private school vat threads are getting silly now but it seems to have stopped the disability benefit bashing ones.

Sunak comes accross as deluded with his hung parliament and the plan is working.

Let's say for the sake of argument Sunak is right and there is a possibility that there will be a hung parliament.
How is saying that you are going from an 80 seat majority to not having a majority a good thing? Surely it still makes you a loser?

So Sunak has just announced to the world he thinks that he is a loser.

DuncinToffee · 06/05/2024 20:41

He would call it being a nearly winner
