Embarrassed by partners go fund me...

Dp has decided to do an extreme "event" on the other side of the world next year. It's one of those things that rich men with too much money are known to do and usually fail having to end up getting rescued 🙄

Dp has decided that he wants to do this, he's become obsessed and this is all he goes on about (for the last three weeks anyway) before that it was smaller cheaper sports he would do once or twice buy all the kit then never mention it again. (our shed has bikes, sports rackets, golf clubs, air rifle, model cars etc you get the drift)

Only thing with this one is he has set up a go fund me (I knew nothing about it till I seen it on SM) for thousands of pounds to pay for the trip. Of course he's sitting at around 1% of the total he needs.

I honestly can't explain the physical reaction I've had to this I could put my head under my pillow and not come out again I'm so embarrassed that he's sharing this about 5 times a day to try and get people to donate!

I've tried telling him raising this amount of money would usually involve hosting events and getting sponsors from big companies but it falls on deaf ears. He's saying to people any money over what he needs will go to charity but realistically he's asking people to fund his midlife crisis and by the small number of donations everyone knows this.

To make matters worse this is an extreme event and he's fundraising before after starting training for a sport he's never actually tried before. I don't even know why I'm posting I just need to rant somewhere.

How do you know which one it is? I have looked and see loads. 😮

I don't I suppose. Just a guess as it's a recent one, donation vs target amount and person raising funds all closely align with OP's description. I won't post as it's not fair on OP, and I could be wrong anyway.

He's not climbing Everest is he?😁
Hopefully he'll lose interest before long and move onto something more mundane.
Who the heck does he think is going to give him money for this vanity driven wild goose chase?

My thought was Everest as well. Apparently it’s covered in human excrement :(

SabreIsMyFave · 12/03/2024 20:49

Thanks @Littleoldme12 Smile I wasn't expecting you to post it though. Smile

ChanelNo19EDT · 12/03/2024 20:52

Can you make an anonymous donation for 50p and a note "more front than sainsbury's, thanks for the laugh".

Maybe he'll take it down.

Emmz1510 · 12/03/2024 21:05

OMG this is cringeworthy. I hate the idea of gofundme for frivolous things like this. He’s a giant man child who never sticks at anything and wastes a ton of money in the process. It’s shameful to ask other people to buy into his pipedream

kandylane · 12/03/2024 21:09

Just donate a small amount anonymously and put "wow you're brave! What charity is the money going to?"

anon4net · 12/03/2024 21:20

Totally agree with you @ick26 I would be mortified. I despise seeing go fund me's for choices and lifestyle like this and ridiculous nonsense when people over spend so can't afford something. I knew a wealthy family that go fund me'd a private autism assessment while having round after round of international IVF to get a girl (selective embryo choosing), and buying a 4 bed detached house in an expensive area that required a 2 hour commute for each of them ($$$) and had 2 trips/holidays booked for that year that required flights in addition to all the IVF/sex selection trips. It's abhorrent and disgusting to expect people to fund your choices.

I'm afraid I would say it closes today and is non-negotiable. I would fear how it reflects on me/the family and especially in light of how many people are truly struggling, I just couldn't let this slide.

Ger1atricMillennial · 12/03/2024 21:33

Yikes... I recently have been going through a mid-life crisis, but in the end I just burst into tears and got a hug and reassurance from a friend.

I know so many people doing these ridiculous feats of physical prowess and it is cringy even if it is on behalf of charity.

You are going to have to let society give him the thumbs down on this one and pick up the pieces afterwards, but I feel your second-hand embarrassment.

ChanelNo19EDT · 12/03/2024 21:36

rather than issuing an ultimatum i'd wait a week, let him ''sit' with other people's disinclination to pay for his adventure. Then give him a week to reflect on that realisation. Slower. But wait and see if he has an epiphany. Obviously that's optimism. He may not!

Sorry wrong thread Grin

SmallestInTheClass · 12/03/2024 21:47

Really cringe worthy. My thoughts and prayers OP. I have a similar cringe with people's kids putting up gofundme to go on white saviour charity holidays.

Howbizarre22 · 12/03/2024 21:49

Ugh what an absolute wanker

Switcher · 12/03/2024 21:52

I don't think I could stay with him tbh!

Oh, same! I swear I see one a season. And then I'm the baddie for not giving.

Notchangingnameagain · 12/03/2024 20:21

I’m not a fan of just giving pages in general.

I’d feel exactly the same if someone in my immediate family did this.

If it’s being shared on Facebook, report him for something random and he won’t be able to post for a while, until they investigate. Or hide his page from your timeline so you don’t see it.

Save the poor man from himself. Good idea!

My vagina just closed up.

😂😂😂😂

2024forthewin · 12/03/2024 22:09

Tell him to sell all his forgotten sports stuff and stick that in his fund

ChampagneLassie · 12/03/2024 22:14

I dated an someone who was always playing the poor struggling card and he setup a go-fund me to go to a funeral in the US (didn’t mention he was putting the monies towards business class flights! ) I massively cringed.

skeletonbones · 12/03/2024 22:29

ah the vanity nonsense charity trip. My ex signed up to one of these many years ago, some sort of grand artic do. He wasn't sporty or outdoorsy either. He requested that I buy him several hundred quid worth of specialist equipment 'from the children' for his birthday. Was outraged when I explained I didn't have a spare pot of money for this. Of course he didn't get the required sponsor money in the end and lost the chance to stylishly freeze in the fancy kit I never bought for him 😁

123bumblebee · 12/03/2024 22:34

My DB does things like this, it’s unbelievably cringeworthy. He’s getting married soon and when I asked him where he is going on honeymoon he said “we’re going to see how much money we rake in from the wedding first” (talking about cash wedding gifts). No shame.

I’d be very surprised if anyone donates. I know lots of people who have blanket bans for things like this.

And dead bodies. A lot of people who summit never make it back.
