THIS IS A LIGHTHEARTED THREAD - MNHQ

I’m sure most of us will often think of extremely sad/distressing stories that we’ve come across in the news. This thread is about news stories that have stuck in your mind for the opposite reason. What news story do you often think of and why?

I often think about the news article where the police officer was sacked because he scanned a £9.95 pack of Krispy Kreme doughnuts as 7p carrots😂😂😂😂 I laugh because how have you risked your whole career for a £10 pack of doughnuts? Absolute madness. Here’s the story below if anyone hasn’t read it before. What’s yours?

What a doughnut: Cop who scanned Krispy Kremes as 7p carrots sacked

The panel concluded that Pc Read breached professional standards of honesty and integrity and that this amounted to gross misconduct.

The story of the wholesale abuse of girls by grooming gangs peadophile rapists in northern towns. It's 100x worse than the Post Office scandal. Lots of people in positions of authority should be serving very long prison sentences but I have a feeling the public will never find out the true scale of it because something to do with carpets and brooms.

Surnami · 12/02/2024 17:28

The more recent story about the boy who starved to death after his dad died and nobody realised. I've thought about him literally every day since I read it. I have a DS a little younger than him and I am haunted by the thought.

A woman about 15 years ago who “fell off her male friend’s toilet” and landed on a plastic toilet brush handle first and lost the handle up her bum. Her friend took her to a&e who declared there was no toilet brush handle up her bum. They even did a X-ray and said nothing was up there. She spent the next year in agony and kept going back to hospital and eventually they did an mri and found it, it had perforated her rectum and embedded in her bum cheek.

sadly it wasn’t a good outcome https://www.deccanherald.com/india/toilet-brush-handle-rear-causes-2490499

Something about this headline was so sweet and amusing to me 🤣

How lovely.
In my opinion a cheese sandwich is the best way to celebrate any birthday.

2008 when Shannon Mathews went missing.
I was in Dewsbury on that day and watched all the double decker busses with police on drive in.. hundreds piled off to go look for her.
Then l watched The Moorside.
We know what happened to The Mother.
I just hope Shannon is in a good place now.

I often think about shannon mathews where she is hope her life is good and much better than where she came from.

@CormorantStrikesBack Blush what a story to concoct eh? The mind boggles.

The story about the poor poor little 4 year old in Wales (who had only just moved from east London) who was killed by his mum's boyfriend and his MMA teenage son, because they didn't like black people. They then chucked his body in a river. Heartless and will meet our Maker.

Also the teenage boy who was pushed into a canal or dam by some idiots in his class. The poor boy couldn't swim. It makes me concerned about the idiots in my DCs' classes and any class trips that they may participate in.

I still think of the little French boy (3-4 year old?) who has gone missing. He disappeared from his family's garden and still hasn't been found.

The two brothers in the US who were locked in a cupboard during one summer for stealing food from the kitchen, and the 6year old died from dehydration. The 9/10 year old survived. Makes me sooo sad and angry.

The story of Jamie Bulger still makes me angry.

Basically anything about hurting children works me up into righteous anger. Seriously.

I thought the thread was meant to be about amusing or uplifting news stories?

Exactly!! I’ve just been reading through and thought, ‘God, this is getting a bit depressing.’ More funny/random/uplifting ones pls! We constantly have threads about really sad events, I’d love to have a thread that’s not about those types of events

I love that Cavy. 💖
Amusing: Anything that appears on our rural Nextdoor email list. Usually about pigs or sheep in the road (again... and again...)

Not amusing: Debbie Purdy. Makes my blood boil when I think how she had to die.

Debbie Purdy - Dignity in Dying

Right-to-die campaigner Debbie Purdy won a landmark ruling to clarify the law on assisted dying.

Not the news but I often think about a bloke who went on embarrassing bodies because he was worried his bum was leaking poo, only to be told he just wasn't wiping his arse properly. I think about him at least once a week and how mortified he must have been😂😂😂

girlfriend44 · 12/02/2024 20:33

James Bulger it's the anniversary of his death today.
Brianna Ghey
Holly and Jessica
Sarah Payne.
Baby P
Sarah Everard
Zara Aleena.
Damilola Taylor.

Just unbelievable that humans are so selfish that they could cause all that grief for the family and friends of the Victims.
The repercussions for the family/friends go on forever.
How can you be so bloody selfish to cause other humans all that pain?

Those poor people stabbed in Nottingham. I can't stop thinking about them. My son is a student there and lives in the next street.
That CCTV of them walking home makes me cry.

Mine too, he’s in his final year. The dignity of the parents just after was so humbling.

Similar for me.
My son was not at Nottingham, but lots of his friends are/were. They are in the year above the two students who were killed. My son used to go to Nottingham to visit his friends there quite often.
Just so sad and tragic

God I remember that episode!

Mind you, there was the thread on MN a few weeks ago where OP had a smelly arse and couldn't figure out why until several posters recommended a miracle cure called soap.
