Tell me about a story in the news that you often think about

THIS IS A LIGHTHEARTED THREAD - MNHQ

I’m sure most of us will often think of extremely sad/distressing stories that we’ve come across in the news. This thread is about news stories that have stuck in your mind for the opposite reason. What news story do you often think of and why?

I often think about the news article where the police officer was sacked because he scanned a £9.95 pack of Krispy Kreme doughnuts as 7p carrots😂😂😂😂 I laugh because how have you risked your whole career for a £10 pack of doughnuts? Absolute madness. Here’s the story below if anyone hasn’t read it before. What’s yours?

What a doughnut: Cop who scanned Krispy Kremes as 7p carrots sacked

The panel concluded that Pc Read breached professional standards of honesty and integrity and that this amounted to gross misconduct.

The story of the farmer flummoxed at how his sheep managed to cross a cattle grid

one was then seen doing a 70’s action film style side roll across the grid 😊

😂😂😂

We need a video of sheep doing the mission impossible roll!

I thought the thread was meant to be about amusing or uplifting news stories?

It's actually an MN research experiment into how many people read full OPs and not just the title.

The canoe man who faked his death and was living next door for years is an absolutely cracking story even now.

Very much going to wander off topic here, but around that time my DH was in a dinner show doing a monologue by Stanley Holloway, one that follows 'The Lion and Albert'. A small boy called Albert gets eaten by a lion in Blackpool, after poking it with his stick.
The monologue was describing how his parents then start to make the case for the insurance, but Albert is spat back out by the lion.

The last lines are:
"Then giving the young lad a shilling
He said 'Ere, pop off back to the zoo
Get your stick with the 'orse's 'ed 'andle,
Go see what the tigers can do."

But DH, him all over, finished with: "Off you go, lad, and find a canoe!"

And has repeatedly pointed out since that it was meant to be a lighthearted thread with funny stories. So why are people still posting depressing ones!?

When Marcus the mystic pig had to go into hiding when he got his England World Cup prediction wrong. The ‘death threats’ were furious fans posting pictures of sausage rolls on Twitter. Poor Marcus!

I know! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve been enjoying many of these stories, but every time I start to laugh I then feel guilty because the next post is ‘dead children’.
Bore off you miseries!
Reading comprehension on mumsnet has completely dived in the last few years.

So much for intelligent conversation. If people can't even be bothered to read a short OP, what hope for Mumsnet? I'm surprisingly irritated by some of the responses on this thread! Infact more than irritated.

SheepAndSword · 13/02/2024 18:43

I want to see the mission impossible sheep! Anyone got a link?

Same here. I actually burst out laughing at one of the posts on here and then the post straight after was so depressing. I could have put ‘lighthearted’ in the thread title and people still wouldn’t have listened!

For no reason whatsoever I regularly think about a kiss & tell on James Arthur I read in a tabloid years ago. The woman said that he kept his dirty white sports socks on whilst 'doing the deed'. Now I think about this at random and whenever I see someone wearing white sports socks.

This made me think of the kiss and tell on one of the proclaimers.

She took a photo of him sleeping in the bed, and then sold the story for £500.

It would be bad enough having, allegedly, shit sex with a proclaimer, but to then sell the story, WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE.... you couldn't bribe that information out of me with all the curly wurlys in the world 🤣🤣

Only last year: the woman who got stuck upside down behind a sofa in a pub after having a "bottomless brunch" for about 10 minutes and had to be pulled out by two male members of staff.

Blasts from the past but Lorena Bobbitt chopping off her husband's penis and throwing it out of a car window and the former Duchess of York's toe-sucking affair. I remember the shock and the jokes at both (in the 90s I think).

Mothership4two · 14/03/2024 02:11

A really old one, from the 80s, that I still think about a lot is the American couple where the wife tried to kill her cheating husband five times but he survived. When he came out of hospital he bailed her out and forgave her (and she him) and they stayed together. I remember hearing or reading an interview where he said he realised that she must really love him to do that! She still did go to prison for a bit (four years). There was a film made about it with Tracey Ullman playing the wife and Kevin Kline the husband.

Just googled them, they were called Tony and Frances Toto and they are still together! They seem like a sweet old couple.
