What do you eat on shrove Tuesday

Do you eat just pancakes for your evening meal, in which case do you feel like you've actually eaten a meal? Or do you have a normal meal and a pancake pudding?
Growing up we just had pancakes but it kinda feels like I should actually give my family a proper meal and not just sugar 😆 so I'm not sure what to do this year

We have proper Scottish pancakes with butter and ham (no French crepes here) and a normal dinner.

That should say butter and jam - not ham

Just pancakes for dinner with lemon and sugar. It's what I did in childhood and just continued.

Just pancakes for dinner in this house

Mine are 5 & 9 so not unmanageable and DH and I like it to!

Usually need to eat toast later on when they've gone to bed as hungry again though!

moleeye · 09/02/2024 03:06

Sweet ones that is!

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 09/02/2024 03:16

I usually don't remember that it's pancake day unless I see a referance to it on mumsnet, but I make pancakes for breakfast with bacon, sausages or ham. If you are serving as dinber I would add scrambled eggs and fruit and if you eat meat, some ham or similar.
Regular food rest of the day.

Penguinsa · 09/02/2024 03:24

We have savoury (e.g. ham, cheese, egg or smoked salmon and sour cream) and sweet pancakes (e.g nutella and banana, white chocolate and kiwi).

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/02/2024 04:51

Pancakes for tea, lemon and sugar. I’ve never had savoury ones!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 09/02/2024 06:29

Normal dinner, then a few sugar and lemon pancakes for pudding. Astonished by people just having a few sweet pancakes for dinner. You must be starving by 9pm.

Whatineed · 09/02/2024 06:35

We start with Mehlsuppe (flour soup) because we integrate traditions of our different countries, then go on to pancakes.

I used to do savoury pancake fillings in the past like brie, bacon and cranberry to make more of a meal of just sweet pancakes, but now it's just Nutella or lemon and sugar.

hungryhiphop · 09/02/2024 06:37

Pancakes can be savoury and it's no worse than having any other carby wheat based meal like pizza or pasta. You can top them with vegetables, cheese, meats etc. Whatever you want! Doesn't have to just be nutella.

hungryhiphop · 09/02/2024 06:40

@DinnaeFashYersel There's nothing more 'proper' about those pancakes - they're just a different type. Crepes are also delicious. All pancakes are delicious. 😁

catwithflowers · 09/02/2024 06:45

Home Mede savoury pancakes have fewer carbs than pizza or pasta 😋. I make French style crêpes with 100g flour, 2 eggs and 300 whole milk then fill with either ham and cheese on a tomato sauce base or spinach and ricotta and bake in the oven. Serve with green salad. Delicious.

When the kids were little it used to be lemon and sugar 🍋

greenacrylicpaint · 09/02/2024 06:45

we have pancakes and a selection of fillings, including savoury.

usually something like fried bacon, mushrooms & onions, chicken & pesto

and of course apple sauce, cinnamon& sugar, chocoate sprinkles, peanut butter, banana... (never lemon as we don't like it)

Ouchmyarse · 09/02/2024 06:46

I grew up in an extremely religious household. Never had a pancake, ever. I didn’t even know it was a thing. I even went to a school were I was taught by nuns 🤣

UpUpUpU · 09/02/2024 06:49

We have savoury first so usually sausages, veg and gravy wrapped in a pancake and then sweet afterwards

AhBiscuits · 09/02/2024 06:50

As a kid we had pancakes for dinner. DH was completely outraged by this so we just have them for dessert these days.

mysparkleismissing · 09/02/2024 06:52

Where's the option for pancakes for breakfast lunch and dinner?

Remember though pancakes aren't just for shrove Tuesday, we can have then everyday if we wanted.

Itsbeentwoyears · 09/02/2024 06:53

We will have only sweet pancakes for dinner. I will keep going until everyone is full. I love sugar and lemon, children like Nutella with bananas or rasperies. I’m going to try to find an apple cinnamon butter sauce thing they had on crepes in France that was lovely.

CakedUpHigh · 09/02/2024 07:11

I've made pancakes once when the kids asked me to, I think that was on Shrove Tuesday. We're not Catholic so we don't shrove on Tuesdays or any other time..

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/02/2024 08:03

I have genuinely never heard of people just having pancakes for dinner on Shrove Tuesday. We have them for pudding but have a normal main course first. Possibly doing it wrong!

TheMainCharacter · 09/02/2024 08:06

We have savoury pancakes followed by sweet

Qwerty21 · 09/02/2024 08:22

mollyfolk · 09/02/2024 00:07

Yes I take the whole day very seriously 🤣. It’s much Nicer than the real Nutella.

Is it not very labour intensive? Or is it easy?

Sweet pancakes only for dinner. Then spend the rest of the evening feeling sick that we've all eaten so much sugar. But that's just part of the day Grin
