Do you eat just pancakes for your evening meal, in which case do you feel like you've actually eaten a meal? Or do you have a normal meal and a pancake pudding?
Growing up we just had pancakes but it kinda feels like I should actually give my family a proper meal and not just sugar 😆 so I'm not sure what to do this year

We just have pancakes.

First course - savoury fillings. Chicken, ham, cheese, bit of salad on the side.

Dessert- sugar, fruit, maple syrup, Nutella.

Whatthetrolley · 09/02/2024 08:40

Pancakes only here, with bananas and strawberries with biscoff or Nutella.

One year Shrove Tuesday fell in half term so every meal had a pancake element, scotch, savory, sweet and sweetcorn fritters. When I mention pancakes now my not so little critics always say, just the nice ones this year (sweet only!)

When they were younger and times were a little lean, I always fed them pancakes as a main meal. As we would always have flour eggs milk and bananas and it would fill them up. Expecting to have to make a double stack this year.

I don't eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

BUT

I have a recipe that is similar to a lasagne but with pancakes instead of pasta.

If you make a stack a day or two before you can fill some with savory fillings and put in the oven to warm.

Bacon, mushroom and cheese go well.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/02/2024 08:58

They don’t have to be full of sugar. My Gdcs often have pancakes for breakfast - usually with half a sliced banana and a little lemon juice inside. They do like Nutella ones, but those are not for daily consumption.

OhSnow · 09/02/2024 11:07

@sprigatito they've never mentioned it if they do.

Do they separate easy enough or do you put greaseproof paper between them or something? Thanks

But we're not talking about daily consumption pancakes, we're talking about once a year pancakes for dinner consumption

If you're not full after dinner on Pancake Day then you didn't make enough pancakes. Make more batter, eat pancakes until you physically can't eat more pancakes.

It's only once a year!

Esgaroth · 09/02/2024 11:47

We do have cheese and bacon pancakes for a 'first course' though. That probably helps. Bit of protein.

ohthehokey · 09/02/2024 11:57

When I was growing up we used to get pancakes for tea, dm would stand at the stove for hours just making dozens of them while we queued with a plate 😂

Personally I don't think it's a very healthy meal so what we tend to do is have a fairly light meal and a couple of pancakes for dessert.

Growlybear83 · 09/02/2024 11:58

We usually have pancakes with sugar and lemon at about 7 pm and then dinner as normal at 9. I've always thought of pancakes on shrove Tuesday as being sweet rather than savoury.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 09/02/2024 12:22

We like pancakes in our family, so once a year for one day only: it's pancakes pancakes and pancakes :)

( Adult ) DD is pleased it's half term so she can have them all day ! tho she will be jolly surprised that my frying pan only appears once that day.

Scotch pancakes with butter and jam for breakfast ( from M&S )

Then she has found a crepe place a couple of miles from home so we will go out for ' lunch ' but she doesn't like savoury ones :(

At dinner time I will make some, ham + cheese for me, sweet only for her so strawbs and banana / lemon + sugar /nutella

Last year was one of the most disappointing pancake days ever...M&S stopped selling their ready made pancake mix :(
It came ready made in a pot, (chilled) and all I had to do was stir it ! then put into frying pan.

I have not found any where else that sells something similar.

the add water or whatever to a bottle of ready dry ingredients and shake just does not do it for me

WhatNoUsername · 09/02/2024 12:26

Savoury followed by sweet.

Inextremis · 09/02/2024 12:42

We usually have a light dinner - beans on toast, or egg on toast, or soup - and then lemon and sugar pancakes afterward.

JudyP · 09/02/2024 13:17

We have breakfast for dinner - eggs bacon and pancakes - scotch style pancakes and then chocolate crepe style pancakes for dessert

longtompot · 09/02/2024 16:19

We have a normal dinner & pancakes for pudding. I make them whilst dinner is cooking & keep warm on a plate over a simmering pan of water & covered with foil.

Elphame · 09/02/2024 16:24

We eat what we normally do and then pancakes afterwards. That's providing I remember it's pancake day; I often forget.

Acommonreader · 09/02/2024 18:06

We have pancakes for breakfast quite regularly! Too nice to save for once a year.

PPTorPDF · 09/02/2024 18:07

Normal dinner. Hate pancakes.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/02/2024 18:09

Often don't bother making pancakes, but if we do it's normal dinner with a pancake or two for pudding.

Crinkle77 · 09/02/2024 19:09

We have pancakes as our tea.

Winifredduck · 09/02/2024 19:13

Main meal of pancakes.
However, I give the children a 'starter' of chopped veg, humous, cheese etc

MythicBish · 09/02/2024 19:14

Thinking of trying a recipe for a pancake made in an oven tray that I saw online (I can’t be standing for hours at the hob to make enough for all of our family)
Probably do something like jacket potatoes and salad, followed by the tray pancakes. Otherwise it won’t be enough to fill my hollow-legged family 😂

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 09/02/2024 19:15

oh gosh, I am Orthodox, so curious what this one all is about
