What do you eat on shrove Tuesday

Do you eat just pancakes for your evening meal, in which case do you feel like you've actually eaten a meal? Or do you have a normal meal and a pancake pudding?
Growing up we just had pancakes but it kinda feels like I should actually give my family a proper meal and not just sugar 😆 so I'm not sure what to do this year

Vegan pancakes with fruit or lemon juice and sugar here, probably late afternoon. We have them fairly often, but not usually on Shrove Tuesday. They are more of a weekend thing.

Is it not very labour intensive? Or is it easy?

It’s fairly easy. Easier if you can find peeled hazelnuts. It’s the only time I make it though so not so easy you’d make it every week. You need a nutri bullet type blender.

Easy 4 ingredient homemade Nutella

Easy homemade 4 ingredient nutella that is vegan, gluten free and so tasty! Well worth trying to make your own at home

We start with Mehlsuppe (flour soup) because we integrate traditions of our different countries, then go on to pancakes.

I used to do savoury pancake fillings in the past like brie, bacon and cranberry to make more of a meal of just sweet pancakes, but now it's just Nutella or lemon and sugar.

Tell me more about flour soup - is it tastier than it sounds? I’ve never heard of it before and I’m really intrigued!

It is tastier than it sounds, and easy to make... It's a tradional linked to the Basel carnival.

You can convert the recipe to english using translate : migusto.migros.ch/de/rezepte/basler-mehlsuppe?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA2pyuBhBKEiwApLaIO1t_1YDVeZLpUdrEHemo--gmirU9dbDpXu2BWIQPnNFuBfNLh-AdgBoCi6kQAvD_BwE

Normally it's eaten on the first day of carnival (Morgenstreich) which starts before dawn. But as my Dc aren't part of any Fasnacht processions anymore, and I usually work, it's nice to fit it in somewhere.

Every region that does Carnival has a version of it. Plus a deep fried sugared very thin dough (called Chuechli) here. Like a sweet powdered poppadom.

I have a Polish colleague who brings a kind of doughnut in too.

I guess we all have our "use thr flour, butter and milk" versions. 😅

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 10/02/2024 13:26

We will probably have them for pudding after tea...

sashh · 11/02/2024 02:31

@Whatineed

What is grated Sbrinz? the translation doesn't translate it.

Oh and I hope the author never lives in the UK / or an English speaking country.

TheChosenTwo · 11/02/2024 03:47

Thank you @Whatineed - I’ve just looked it up, it looks really savoury and tasty!
So you’ll have this for dinner? And then pancakes after?

blinkofaneye90 · 11/02/2024 08:30

I would love to make a stack of pancakes for my lot. All the toppings on the table to choose from. But in reality mine won't care that it's shrove Tuesday, sadly

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/02/2024 08:31

Pancakes for dinner.
Can do savoury crepes and then sweet pancakes

DelilahBucket · 11/02/2024 08:32

Savoury pancakes for tea. This time we're having Okonomiyaki, Japanese pancakes.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/02/2024 08:34

AnotherEmma · 08/02/2024 22:47

Savoury pancakes are filling. The classic cheese, ham and egg is very filling. One of those plus one with smoked salmon and I'm full enough to move onto the sweet ones!

Or chicken in a white sauce. Yum!

Wolfpa · 11/02/2024 08:37

We normally have chorizo filled pancakes which are covered in a tomato sauce and cheese then baked in the oven, these are served with rice. We then go sweet

ConsistentlyPeeved · 11/02/2024 10:24

Normal meal for us followed by pancakes with fruit/ sweet toppings for desert.
My 8 year old son doesn't like them so he'd be starved of pancakes where the only option Grin

Sbrinz is a very hard cheese only produced in Switzerland, like the Swiss version of parmesan.

It's a traditional Swiss soup consumed during Fasnacht, why would the author live in an English speaking country or care to? The recipe is from a Swiss website. What a strange statement.

Yes we will this year, as we won't have another opportunity to have it this year, as we're not attending carnival (Fasnacht).

Borborygmus · 11/02/2024 12:58

No pancakes whatsoever!

UnimaginableWindBird · 11/02/2024 13:03

My mum's French, so I always used to have galettes followed by sweet pancakes, but for the past couple of years I've made okonomiyaki for the main course, because it's a sort of pancake and less faff to cook than galettes - one will feed all of us.

The recipe is written by Vanessa Fuchs, it would be an unfortunate name in an English Speaking country.

Just my odd sense of humour.

HAF1119 · 12/02/2024 07:17

We have normal dinner and pancakes for pud... greedy!! Though we have only 1 (5yo) or 2 (adults) for pudding

I think when I was a child we just had pancakes and that was it, though struggling to remember it now!

Qwerty21 · 13/02/2024 11:54

The day is upon us! Lo already disappointed that not every meal today is going to be pancakes lol

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2024 15:07

We had pancakes for breakfast (dc2 had 3, dc3 had 5, I had 2 and dh had gone to work so none for him). I made a treble sized batter and we will have them for pudding too.

AnotherEmma · 13/02/2024 15:16

My two wanted pancakes for breakfast but sadly no time on weekdays, too much of a rush getting everyone to school, nursery and work on time!

TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2024 15:18

@AnotherEmma im wfh today and the dc are on half term so I had the time this morning when I’d usually be getting everyone up and ready.
and previously I’ve worked very locally at school friendly times so have always been able to make them before breakfast. However I usually have to wrap my hair in a towel as otherwise I can smell the fried butter all day 😂

The deep fried thin dough sounds like the "bugnes" they eat in certain parts of France like Savoie

LemonySnickets · 13/02/2024 15:45

Only have pancakes for an evening meal on shrove Tuesday! With Nutella and banana. Or Nutella and marshmallows. I've already had my dinner as I was in work stupid o'clock this morning so was starving when I got home.
