What do you eat on shrove Tuesday

Do you eat just pancakes for your evening meal, in which case do you feel like you've actually eaten a meal? Or do you have a normal meal and a pancake pudding?
Growing up we just had pancakes but it kinda feels like I should actually give my family a proper meal and not just sugar 😆 so I'm not sure what to do this year

Just pancakes.
I have this conversation with DH every year. He thinks you should have them for pudding, I do not.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/02/2024 20:08

That bun looks amazing, @Lunde !

Ds made lovely fluffy American-style pancakes for breakfast this morning, which I like just as much as crêpes. I only had half a one, as I'd had breakfast earlier. Ds had 6 Shock but he is a lanky teenager who could do with putting a bit of weight on!

Zonder · 13/02/2024 20:10

We also just have pancakes. Savoury then sweet.

One sweet pancake each here! (We are in Italy though so we had lots of sweet carnival cakes, sugar tagliatelle, fried mini donuts and ravioli as well!)

kennycat · 13/02/2024 20:17

We had bangers and mash then pancakes for pudding.
I’d forgotten that pancakes take ages to do. I forget every year!

Attictroll · 13/02/2024 20:18

Just pancakes for me and dc but dp insisted on cooking himself chicken too 😂

Ds this year as usual has 3 lots of pancakes, school, cubs as a Tuesday pack and at home but was " deprived " so had a healthy banana style pancake for breakfast too.

Do they? Genuinely interested to know how you do yours.

threatmatrix · 13/02/2024 20:24

I do sweet pancakes when kids get in around 4 the wed have a dinner at 7.

pollymere · 13/02/2024 20:27

Growing up it was a regular meal followed by pancakes. Now we have savoury pancakes followed by sweet ones. Ham and cheese, mushrooms, fruit and ice cream, fruit and Nutella etc. Growing up it was pretty much just lemon and sugar - not sure if we'll have those! We've bought in extra syrup instead.

Yellowdaysaregood · 13/02/2024 20:35

I do savoury ones first filled with chicken and mushroom sauce, then sweet with sugar and lemon, however we have the absolute bastard flu, and for the first time I can remember on shrove Tuesday we've had tomato soup instead. 😭

StaunchMomma · 13/02/2024 20:54

We always go a light meal, eg egg or sardines on toast, then hit the pancakes hard 😋

Mustreadabook · 13/02/2024 20:56

Well today I had sweet pancakes for breakfast, and savoury then sweet pancakes for evening meal. No pancakes at midday unfortunately .

Zonder · 13/02/2024 20:22

They take a while to fry and then obv you can only fit one in the pan at once. So if you are making 8 day that’s about 24 mins at least stood at the pan. Is there a quicker way? I’d love to know!

Onemoremakesthree · 13/02/2024 21:51

Grew up having them as the evening meal, have always done the same for my family, it's the highlight of the winter 😂😂. Traditionally just lemon and sugar but they usually get talked in to maple syrup or Nutella type stuff as well

And yes it means I'm at the hob for ages but this year DS2 then took the helm and made me some, normally I eat the sacrificial first one and am sick of the sight of them by the time I'm done feeding the fam, was a real treat tonight

Perkatory · 13/02/2024 21:56

A cheese pancake, followed by a couple of sweet ones. Usually have some fresh fruit as well. We aren't massive eaters though.

Pancakes as pudding or breakfast .
Never heard of anyone having them for an evening meal and I’m 50+!

Edited

Well we just had them for evening meal.

I leave the house at 7:15am and have my breakfast at work. The kids are only just getting up as I leave. There’s no way we could do pancakes for breakfast. And when we’ve been on holiday places that have pancakes it’s not something I’d choose for breakfast.

weren’t only have a light evening meal anyway. So we just had the pancakes tonight at 6pm. However when we e got back home after evening activities I’ve had a couple of slices of toast. My youngest (11) had 2 pancakes and said she was full! Me and the eldest had 3 and there’s some kid left over in the fridge.

I tried savoury crepes from a crepe cafe once and I’m not sure I’d get them again. But o like my sweet ones only really with sugar sprinkled on.

ThreeRingCircus · 13/02/2024 22:21

Just pancakes for dinner. It's pancake day! Plus no way am I making dinner and then also standing at the cooker making pancakes as a dessert.

We had them with bacon and maple syrup today, so reasonably filling. I keep wanting to try savoury rolled and baked ones e.g spinach and ricotta or chicken and mushroom but there would be uproar from DDs 🤣

WhatNoUsername · 13/02/2024 22:42

Savoury pancakes followed by sweet for dinner. Yum!

myfaceismyown · 13/02/2024 22:42

We had savoury crepes with tuna, melted cheese and garlic - yum!

Sierra26 · 13/02/2024 22:52

We had this debate tonight.

DH wants just pancakes

I want a balanced (light) meal followed by sweet pancakes

DH wins every year

im lying in bed reading this thread and cant sleep as im feeling so hungry despite eating 6 pancakes and wishing I’d just cooked the damn sausages I was going to do on the side.

we’re big eaters normally, why must I pretend I’m satisfied by empty calories just because it’s pancake day?? we did a few ham and cheese but it’s just not enough or balanced enough to fill me up

Well we use two pans for a start! And I make quite thin crepe style so they are pretty quick.

TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2024 23:09

@kennycat I cook mine in about 60 seconds, really thin pan, very hot, blob of butter and in with the batter (just enough to cover the base of the pan), let it sit for about 40 seconds, quick flip and 15 seconds on the other side.
Obviously if you’re doing the thicker American pancakes they do take longer but you can get more than one of those in at once or we have a hot plate thing on the side of the hob for making those.
Dh fundamentally doesn’t believe in any quick cooking though, he cooks them low and slow in an heavy cast iron frying pan and they’re all stodgy and gloopy. He does the majority of the cooking in our house and he’s very good at it but his pancakes are shit so the kids ban him from making them and I step up 😂

DiscoBeat · 13/02/2024 23:09

Pancakes for breakfast with maple syrup and blueberries.

KingofCats · 14/02/2024 06:56

Love savoury pancakes!
cheese and ham or cheese and tomato for the kids.
I had feta, roasted red pepper and garlicky cavelo nero with mine.
then sweet selection of fresh berries, syrup, lemon & sugar.
DD (10) made rainbow coloured ones with food colouring.
I make a huge bowl of batter both for thick American style and thin crepes and my older kids just make in rounds.
we had a lovely time.

Skethylita · 14/02/2024 07:51

We had an entire day of pancakes here!

Breakfast were sweet ones with fruit (strawberries, raspberries and banana).

Lunch were plain ones with hoisin duck and cucumber.

Dinner were cheesy ones - spinach ones or ham and cheese.
